Many people view childbirth as a joyful and fulfilling event. Writer Paul Carvel stated, “To witness the birth of a child is our best opportunity to experience the meaning of the word miracle” (as cited in Brill, 2011, Well Pregnancy Links section, para. 3). Irish dramatist, George Bernard Shaw further explained, “Life is a flame that is always burning itself out, but it catches fire again every time a child is born” (as cited in Moncur, 2010, p. 1). Yet, along with the joy of bringing another human being into this world come concerns about the appropriate medical decisions that need to be made by the mother. It is not uncommon for women to have questions and concerns about what it is they can and cannot do throughout their pregnancy.
Undoubtedly, the key to a healthy pregnancy is seeking adequate prenatal care. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services [Office on Women’s Health] (2009), “Babies of mothers who do not get prenatal care are three times more likely to have a low birth weight and five times more likely to die than those born to mothers who do get care” (p. 1). This is where the prenatal nurse educator plays a major role. A prenatal nurse educator specializes in prenatal care and has acquired advance knowledge, usually a Bachelor or Master of Science in Nursing degree, that ensures that both the mother and the baby are healthy. The prenatal nurse job requirements include performing physical assessments, ordering and interpreting lab results, and teaching various childbirth techniques. The prenatal nurse educator helps aid the expecting mother throughout the prenatal period, during delivery, and even after the delivery of the baby. The nurse educator is able to better prepare expecting mothers fo...

...regnant mother consumes alcohol, it is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream and crosses the placenta putting the fetus at risk for fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), which causes permanent birth defects. “Approximately 40,000 infants are born with a FASD, a number that has remained unchanged for the past 10 years in the U.S.” (March & Frozena, 2010).
Childbirth is a very exceptional experience that comes with its own set of medical anxieties. Babies are continuously being born every day to frightened mothers who do not know what to expect. Prenatal nurses help make childbirth less terrifying by guiding mothers throughout the entire process. As a result, the prenatal nurse profession is growing significantly. Prenatal nurse educators are a great strength to expecting mothers. Prenatal nurse educators help make the experience of giving life more enjoyable.
Neonatal nursing is a field of nursing designed especially for both newborns and infants up to 28 days old. The term neonatal comes from neo, "new", and natal, "pertaining to birth or origin”. Neonatal nurses are a vital part of the neonatal care team. These are trained professionals who concentrate on ensuring that the newborn infants under their care are able to survive whatever potential life threatening event they encounter. They treat infants that are born with a variety of life threatening issues that include instances of prematurity, congenital birth defects, surgery related problems, cardiac malformations, severe burns, or acute infection. Neonatal care in hospitals was always done by the nursing staff but it did not officially become a specialized medical field until well into 1960s. This was due to the numerous advancements in both medical care training and related technology that allowed for the improved treatment and survival rate of premature babies. According to the March of Dimes, one of every thirteen babies born in the United States annually suffers from low birth weight. This is a leading cause in 65% of infant deaths. Therefore, nurses play a very important role in providing round the clock care for these infants, those born with birth defects or other life threatening illness. In addition, these nurses also tend to healthy babies while their mothers recover from the birthing process. Prior to the advent of this specialized nursing field at risk newborn infants were mostly cared for by obstetricians and midwives who had limited resources to help them survive (Meeks 3).
...o find a balance between interventional and non-interventional birth. With this being said, I also understand that there are strict policies and protocols set in place, which I must abide to as a healthcare provider, in any birth setting. Unfortunately, these guidelines can be abused. Christiane Northrup, MD, a well recognized and respected obstetrician-gynecologist has gone as far as to tell her own daughters that they should not give birth in a hospital setting, with the safest place being home (Block, 2007, p. xxiii). Although I am not entirely against hospital births, I am a firm believe that normal, healthy pregnancies should be fully permissible to all midwives. However, high-risk pregnancies and births must remain the responsibility of skilled obstetricians. My heart’s desire is to do what is ultimately in the best interest of the mother, and her unborn child.
Perinatal nurses and neonatal nurses both assist the doctor during the birth depending on the risk of the pregnancy and how they think the baby will do will determine what nurse is in the room with you. Both neonatal nurses and perinatal nurses deal with newborn babies. If your baby is high-risk for illness or if your baby is being born prematurely there will be a neonatal nurse with you in the delivery room. If your baby is healthy and being born on time you will have a perinatal nurse with you in the delivery room. In the nursery although they deal with babies with different health they do some things the same when they are taking care of them. Nurses in both the NICU and the well-baby nursery have to take care of babies right after delivery measuring vital signs and giving them vital nutrients. Both nurses must evaluate the condition of each patient exclusively and use the information the gather to create or adjust the patient’s treatment plan. Both jobs go through the same training until the neonatal nurse has to start training for the
...re I cater to every single one of these babys needs, After i graduate high school, i need to pursue a career as a neonatal nurse in order to better prepare myself to be a neonatal nurse practitioner. Neonatal nurse practitioners are very important in todays world. We need them to help our babies have a chance of living. Neonatal nurses are some of the biggest hero’s we have on Earth today, without the some of us wouldn’t have the children we have with us today. “Nursing care comes in many forms. Sometimes it is the ability to make someone feel physically comfortable by various means. Other times it is the ability to improve the body's ability to achieve or maintain health. But often it is an uncanny yet well honed knack to see beyond the obvious and address, in some way, the deeper needs of the human soul.” ~Donna Wilk Cardillo, A Daybook for Beginning Nurses
Neonatal nursing is a very challenging field which requires a lot of education before you can become certified. A person’s education has to be backed up by many certifications before even coming close to holding a baby. The expert has the job of supporting loved ones of the infant while they are feeling upset or overwhelmed. Also the expert has the responsibility of showing parents how to properly care for their infant.
They teach me how to weigh the babies, how to take their temperature, and how to monitor their heart rate. Although I learned all this in College, its nothing compared to doing it hands on. Every move we as neonatal nurses make are vital to the safety of these children. As I walk around the Nursery, I see all the little ones and hear them crying. One of the first things I notice is a very small infant in the corner of the room hooked up to bunch of tubes just like my brother was. An incubator is pressed against the wall with a light extending from it and in it, the child. I ask my supervisor what's wrong with Baby Michael, as the bracelet on his foot says. Her face gets serious as she looks at me and says “ He’s 10 weeks premature, his organs aren't fully developed and he's got a hole in heart. He is just so small. He won't make it thru surgery. “ These words sink in as I lower my head and walk to the restroom. It is there in that stall,on the 3rd floor of the maternity ward, where my tears start to flow. Possibility of death is always an outcome in the nursing field and I knew that before I even started in this direction, but why does it have to be so hard? I can't imagine what his parents are feeling after hearing this news. My family was once in the same situation and I know how scared we all were at the thought of losing my brother. As I think about this, I take a second and say a prayer
A labor and delviery nurse has vast knowledge of the process and methods that are required for delivery and bring a new life into the world and is educated with the responsibilities of assiting the new born babies with their medical issues. Considering all the responsibilites needed to take on this career, such as assisting women with complications within the pregnancy, delivering a newborn and managing post birth issuses, the nurse must be professional in his or her work at all times. All people wishing to pursue the career of being a Labor and Delivery Nurse must also have good analytical skills, as part of there job to montior and analyze the mother and child (CollegeAtlas.org).
The consumption of alcohol during any gestation of pregnancy equates into alcohol fetal consumption, which can cause detrimental physical and neurological defects. Infants born with the varying degrees of detrimental effects of prenatal alcohol ingestion can have an array of disorders which are described as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders [FASD] (May & Gossage, 2011a). The most profound effects of prenatal alcohol exposure are on the fetus’s brain development, which includes cognitive and behavioral effects that follow (Riley, Infante, & Warren, 2011). The incidence of FASD is believed to range from 0.2 to 2 per 1000 live births (Douzgou et al., 2012). Alcohol yields teratogentic effects in all the gestations, with peculiar features in relationship to the trimester of pregnancy in which the alcohol is consumed (Paoletti et al., 2013). Due to the fact that there is no exact dose-response relationship between the amount of alcohol ingested during the prenatal period and the extent of damage caused by alcohol in the fetus, abstinence from alcohol at conception and during pregnancy is strongly recommended (Paoletti et al., 2013).
“I brought you into this world, and I can take you out!” A child has most likely heard that phrase at some point in their life. Although, it is not ethical or legal for a mother to “take her kid out of this world”, it does bring up a good point that it was through her body, that the child was born. One of the most important responsibilities in this world is a mother carrying a child in the womb. There are many divine processes that take place during gestation, but there are also many contributing factors from the mother that can affect the developing human. These factors may include what a woman ingests and exposes her embryo or fetus to. Sadly, alcohol use during pregnancy is an ongoing problem that can have detrimental affects on the fetus, including Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS). Choosing to drink alcoholic beverages during pregnancy is a choice, a risky choice. Unfortunately some women don’t even know they are making a risky choice by consuming alcohol because it is in the early stages of pregnancy. It is common for a female to not find out they are pregnant until at least the fifth or sixth week after fertilization. In 2006, 49% of all pregnancies in the United States were reported unintended on a national survey.1 The highest rate of preventable birth defects and mental retardation is due to alcohol use.2 In this paper, I will further discuss FAS, the potential effects of binge drinking during the embryonic stage of gestation, and what actions need to be taken in order to reduce the incidences of alcohol related birth defects.
Ms. Robin Mitchell, an experience labor and delivery nurse, says, “ I have worked in many different fields of nursing, but working in Labor and Delivery was by far, my favorite. There is nothing to compare to the joy and satisfaction of sharing the experience of childbirth with a family. It is an unforgettable feeling of pride and sense of accomplishment, to see the new parent’s look in their eyes when they get to hold their newborn baby in their arms for the first time. Most times it is a happy experience, but many times, you have to share the loss of a child with a family. These are times that are difficult, but are unforgettable and despite the sad situation, helping a family through this difficult process can be rewarding and is something that you will never
A nurse’s role in our society today is exceptionally significant. Nurses are somewhat idolized and looked to as our everyday “superman”. “The mission of nursing in society is to help individuals, families, and groups to determine and achieve physical, mental, and social potential, and to do so within the challenging context of the environment in which they live and work” (“The Role of a Nurse/Midwife”). Many Americans turn to nurses for delivery of primary health care services and health care education (Whelan). In our country, there is constantly someone in need of health care. There will always be a baby being born or a person dying, someone becoming ill or growing old. Some people due to their physical and/or mental state of health are completely dependent on a nurse and wouldn’t be able to get through the simple obstacles of every day, or achieve the necessary requirements of a simple day without their aid. Not only do nurses help, and assist you when you’re sick, but also act to promote good health to others. They end...
Berk conveys that while doctors are present during some home births, most are attended “…by certified nurse-midwives who have degrees in nursing and additional training in childbirth management” (CITATION). There are risks associated with childbirth, regardless of the setting. For women who are healthy, have not experienced issues during their pregnancies, and have not experienced issues with previous pregnancies, and are attended by a medical professional, home births can be just as safe as hospital births. Homebirths can also be more relaxing because the mother can move about more freely and has more control over the birthing experience than generally permitted during a hospital birth. Complications can arise during home births just as they can during a hospital birth. Therefore, it is wise to have a plan in place for transportation to the hospital if needed. There are numerous advantages to home births which include freedom of movement, more control over the birthing experience, decreased unnecessary medical interventions, and faster recovery. Disadvantages to homebirths include that a doctor is not likely to be quickly
My mother has been in this field for 30 years; she takes care of women’s health from the on set of menses, through child bearing to menopause. One of the similarities to a Pediatric nurse is that she gets to follow the growth and development of the baby. She is caring for mom and baby for thirty-eight to forty weeks gestation. The most rewarding part for her is to hand the mother a healthy baby. The most challenging part is when the mother is not able to conceive or fails to carry full term. One of my mother’s favorite stories is when an infertility patient tried numerous times to conceive without success. They tried one more cycle with intrauterine insemination with husband’s sperm and in four weeks they had a positive pregnancy test. They followed the patient through 8 months of pregnancy and she delivered a healthy baby
The medical field is vital to society and is will always be in need of a medical staff. Nurses are a crucial part of the medical team and are the ones responsible for the care and safety of patients. Nursing requires great communication skills, responsibility, patience, and dedication. Many nurses are social and like to care for others, enjoy thinking on their feet and problem solving, and excel at collaborating with others. These skills help a nurses work efficiently and are often the best skills suited for this profession. Nurses are health educators and advocates for patients, families and communities. "They have a unique scope of practice and can practice independently, although they also collaborate with all members of the health care
The miracle of life is something most of us will experience in our lifetime. The process before actually giving birth, I think is the hardest part of the entire scenario of child bearing. This amazing experience is something that can make the individuals who are involved in the process change in so many ways. The process of giving birth, for those of you who have not experienced or will never experience it, can be very hard, long and rewarding all at the same time. To give a better description, think of eating a fireball. At first the fireball is tame and calm, but just when you least expect it the fireball becomes hot. Then, when the hot sensation becomes too much, the sweet flavor of the fireball breaks through.
