The slow maturation process allows the human species to live longer and live smarter than any other mammal of comparable body size, and is the mechanism responsible for producing modern day humans. Immaturity has resulted in many benefits to the human species and can be directly linked as a product of evolution.
The extended period of physical immaturity serves helpful purposes for the human species. The limited motor capabilities that are endured by infants and young children make the child more dependent on the caregivers, and as a result this prevents the infants from wandering far from the caregiver. The extended period of physical immaturity serves as a survival advantage in that a child will remain close to his/her caregiver due to necessity. In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, Huck experiences many situations which require him to use his moral judgment. During the entire adventure, Huck is essentially in charge of the fate of Jim. Huck’s taught beliefs lead him down the wrong path in the beginning, but eventually –until Tom arrives- his newly developed morals guide him. Society believes that slaves should be treated as property, but Huck’s new beliefs tell him that Jim is a person; not property. Though Huck does not realize that his actions are more moral than those of his environment, he chooses to follow his instincts rather than to follow the rules. As shown in The Adventures of Huck Finn, as well as events of my own daily life, I believe that while external environment has a small impact on our beliefs and identities, every individual fully develops their own morals without regard to what their environment taught them.
In this essay I will be going to consider the lifespan development process and describe the following changes in an infant from content supported in my text. Infants are one of the most amazing transformations I think the world sees. To think we all came from infancy and developed into grown adults who do amazing things everyday. I’ll be talking about the physical change in an infant,as well as the mental changes they experience,and the sensory changes they go through that we all went through and eventually brought us to adulthood.
Before this class my initial stance on the human predicament was the abuse of power by exploiting others to gain more power, but based on our course readings, and my own reflection, I have learned that this is not entirely the case. Now I believe that the basic human predicament is that we are insecure with our being as individuals because of social standards that have taught us it is right to exploit others for our own benefit. To resolve this issue, we need to take time to reflect, ask questions, and trust in God. When we take these steps, God will empower us to gradually learn to exhibit a “self-forgetting love” as Karl Rahner contends, and taking us closer to social justice and confidence with our purpose in life. To support my claim, I will mainly draw on three theologians who share a similar perspective on our predicament.
