Have you ever wondered what you say to the world ? Or how people view you ? It’s normal to wonder what you say to the world, you can make a good impression or an bad impression on the world . People will always look at how you dress, how you look, where you come from and how you talk . There will always be somebody that will judge you in life without knowing who you are personally yet ,it’s a sad reality but that’s just life . For example, status presents itself everywhere in the world . Especially in the novel, The Skin I’m In by Sharon Flake . In this novel, status has an very big impact on the characters. In the novel one of the main characters Maleeka is affected by status because she’s trying so hard to be acceptable to people. In this novel she also gets bullied because of skin color, and also because she is too “skinny” and also too smart. The reason she felt the need to change herself was because she got bullied by another character in the book who’s name is john-john. He made up a song about her being the skin color she is . In addition not only does status play a role in Sharon Flake’s novel, it connects to the rest of the world . …show more content…
Status affects many people of the world because many people often try to be like others, and get like others it’s okay to be inspired by others but it’s not okay to try and be like others . For example, if a black man walks outside he has to dress/talk a certain way to be accepted
One of the key factors that all living organisms share is the ability to adapt and respond to their environment. Of course, humans are no exception to this. People are easily influenced by the things surrounding them. Think of a child raised in a harsh area compared to one raised in a wealthy household- their lifestyles are likely to be different. This rule can be applied to literature, too. In Passing, Romeo and Juliet, and The Book Thief, the characters discussed are shaped by their social environments.
Allen supports her claims about hierarchies and power dynamics in her chapter “Social Class Matters.” She dives into the structures of society by examining power and social class in various contexts. In this chapter, she explains that people are categorized according to themes of class difference and struggle. Social class is associated with the relationship between power and the distribution of resources. Because this stratification system of social class is one of the biggest predictors of school achievement, social identity plays a large role in the social reproduction of inequality in the education system.
What I mean by this is that their privilege is dependent on where they are located and are dominant in that area. The example in the essay “The Unexamined” that Ross gives when he was going to Rome illustrates this very clearly. As he says that the white people have the privilege of being unexamined, it depends on how good they fit in with others in the same area. When he was in his city everyone around him had similar features so he would blend in easy. In this case nobody would examine him, or point a finger on him, hence the being in a privileged group opinion he had about himself. But all this would change as soon as he moved to another place, where people have different features then his. He would stand out from the rest, losing his group’s privileges as unexamined. So in order for Ross to maintain his group’s privilege he has to maintain his geographic location. Another example that shows that privileged groups maintain their privilege by staying in the same location is of that of people who are part of a gang. Being in a gang you have the privilege of having power over other people who are not part of your gang. Everyone is afraid of you and nobody would come against you. I’ve seen this in a lot of different movies that I like to watch during my free time. Members of different gangs taunt everyone that come in their territory. They are the ones that make the rules in that area. They have the privilege to rule other people’s lives. But if they move to a different area that’s not part of their gang they lose their privilege. They are not in control anymore. Nobody cares who they are no one is afraid of them. It’s like they don’t even exist anymore. These two examples show that groups can maintain their privilege by staying in the same geographic area, otherwise they would lose it and be no more than a regular group with no power or even a slight importance
Overall, race, class and culture impacts one’s place in society. I have Four hundred years of history cannot be wiped away so easily. I realized that society has a long way to go and the importance of fighting all injustices. Martin Luther King captured it best by saying “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere”.
Society is filled with outcasts. Everywhere one looks, there is someone who is different and has been labeled as an outcast by the others around them. People fear disturbance of their regular lives, so they do their best to keep them free of people who could do just that. An example of this in our society is shown in people of color. Whites label people who do not look the same as them as and treat them as if they are less important as they are. The white people in our society, many times unconsciously, degrade people of color because they fear the intuition that they could cause in their everyday lives. Society creates outcasts when people are different from the “norm.”
It is important to understand how privilege affects others because it allows you to see how other people can be affected in different situations on a daily basis. It allows you to picture yourself in their perspectives and to better understand how a person’s ethnic background, sexual orientation, and social class can mean the difference in how others treat them.
In learning about different ways that we as a society categorize and divide people, it is essential to understand what about people it is that we feel the need to label and differentiate between. When a person is born into this world, there are certain statuses that they automatically obtain, called ascribed statuses (Henslin 98). These statuses determine each person’s social location in society. This includes gender, race, ethnicity, class, sexual orientation, and ability. Each person has their own unique social location, and is affected in a different way than the next person may be. As a white, queer, cisgender, middle class, female, in relatively good health, I have always been relatively privileged.
The reader must also recognize what social class the author is in and how that could possible affect the authors portrayal of characters.

The first term, ascribed status plays a large role in the analysis. For example, it is the social status a person is assigned at birth or assumed involuntarily later in life. It is a position that is neither earned nor chosen, but assigned. This term depicts the two families immensely. The mother and father in both families came from poor backgrounds and lived through struggle their entire lives. This plays a large role in life because it already puts you behind people who come from successful backgrounds. It is not easy to work your way back out of poverty if you were born into it. Nobody asks to live that way, but some are just assigned to live that way, and cannot do anything about it to fix it.
Stratification across the states has created a divide between classes. It has allowed the upper class to solely remain with the upper class, while the working class only associates with the working class. It has caused people to only feel comfortable within their own class. Stratification has allowed people to see others as those to be feared or as those to be ignored. It has also created an unspoken boundary that says it is wrong to associate with another class. In the film, it was evident how the people only felt comfortable to associate with those who were like them. Even more than that, though, it revealed how it was not expected for the classes to intertwine. Based on the readings in Unit 3: Whiteness, I do not agree with the following statement. White skin is not magical and it does not ultimately offer white women a sense of belonging to society, or from their ethnic community. Instead, I believe that the statement should be altered to where it states that: White skin can offer advantages in forms of privileges, yet this ‘privilege’ and comfort can be taken away and given at any time.
