We as a society prefer to own big fancy name-brands rather than get an education. Kids today don't want to learn or go to school. They create this idea that going to school or being smart lowers your status of being popular. Especially in the novel The Skin I'm In by Sharon G Flake. In the novel status plays a major role in the life of Maleeka ( the main character) . The novel The Skin I'm In is about an African American Girl of a darker complexion. Her name is Maleeka Madison she goes through school and life and she tries to fit in with the other people surrounding her. Maleeka's mother makes her clothes so she asked a manipulating and intimidating girl named Charlese to supply her with protection and clothing so that she could fit in and in return Maleeka would do homework . Maleeka describes Charlese as a girl who protects her , but in reality Charlese manipulates and deceives Maleeka . For instance , Malika strives to fit with her community . She goes so far that she cuts her hair off, but even that doesn't work. Her community / surroundings find more to bully Malika about .
