“Power doesn't corrupt people, people corrupt power” (William Gaddis). This quote describes the leadership of Napoleon in Animal Farm because as a leader, he was dishonest to the animals in order to do what he wanted without their consent and was using his power to his advantage. The book Animal Farm, written by George Orwell, is about the Russian Revolution that began on March 8, 1917. It was a revolution in Russia that dismantled Czar Nicholas II and established the Soviet Union. In Animal Farm, it has many references to what occurred in the revolution such as the hens rebelling, the public executions that were led by Napoleon, and the trade between Frederick and Napoleon. In order to know how the events in Animal Farm compare to Russian …show more content…
Revolution, one must go deeper into the topics. To begin with, Napoleon wanted to sell four hundred eggs a week in order to buy supplies for the farm.
Earlier in the book, Old Major, a boar who died in his sleep, had a speech in which he complained about the humans focusing on the cruelty of egg selling. After that day, they stopped the selling of eggs until now. The hens thought that Napoleon was not following the rules of a leader, so they rebelled. When they were to lay eggs, they laid them in the rafters in order to smash the eggs on the floor. Napoleon made a rule that said if any animal were to be seen feeding the hens, they would be killed. As a result, nine hens died and the five day strike came to an end. This event is an allegory to when Stalin asked farmers for some crops because they were running out of it. The farmers declined, and Stalin did the same as Napoleon and told everyone to not feed them. Nine farmers died during the protest, and soon enough, the strike ended. In this allegory, the hens were being deceived because Napoleon took their eggs, and the farmers were being deceived because Stalin was taking their crops. Although this seemed as if this was the last animal killing event on the farm, the animals did not know what hit them after many
days. Another comparison that is used was Napoleon blaming all of the animal’s problems on Snowball, a previous candidate that was running to be leader of the farm against Napoleon, but was forced out by Napoleon’s dogs. Some of the many problems were stealing their corn, milking the cows in their sleep, and stealing their store-shed key and throwing it down a well. Napoleon made animals falsely accuse themselves with working in public and killed them while everyone watched. The purpose of the killing was to instill fear throughout the animals who survived because he thought that that was a way to keep them controlled. Stalin also killed many of his citizens in Soviet Union in order to instill fear into others to make them follow him. Although it may seem like the Russian Revolution and Animal Farm both compare in killing their people, there were other events that took place. Napoleon wanted to sell some timber from Mr. Jones’s time since the animals were not using it. He wanted to negotiate the sale with either Mr. Pilkington or Mr. Frederick. When the odds of selling the timber was to Mr. Frederick, they were taught to hate Mr. Pilkington. When Mr. Pilkington was ready to buy the timber, they were then taught to hate Mr. Frederick. Soon enough, Mr. Frederick was the one to buy the timber and gave Snowball money exchange for it. When the animals finished the windmill that was going to do their tasks for them, he wanted to buy supplies for it with that money, but figured out it was fake money. Soon enough, Mr. Frederick attacked the animals with armed men. He and his men planted dynamite in the windmill and blew it up. The animals were enraged at the destruction of their hard work, so they started to attack, and the men retreated. This compares to when the Soviet wanted to sign a non-German political alliance with France and German, but turned them down and signed a non-aggression pact to keep peace for 10 years with Hitler instead. After two years occurred, Stalin’s spies told him that Hitler was going to break the peace by attacking them. Stalin did not believe them, but soon enough, millions of German troops were storming Soviet Union. All-in-all, Animal Farm is a short novel using animals in order to illustrate a picture of the Russian Revolution to the audience. George Orwell explained the importance of it in an authentic way. Through Orwell’s description of the Russian revolution through farm animals, he made many allusions to Stalin through Napoleon. Many events like the hens rebelling, public executions, and the trade between Napoleon and Mr. Frederick were allegories to the main events that occurred in Russia. Although there were many other key events that also occurred, he masterfully elaborated on the most significant events.
Napoleon is an extremely deceitful character in numerous ways. For example, Napoleon tricks the animals into thinking concepts that are not true. “Throughout the whole period of his seeming friendship with Pilkington, Napoleon had really been in a secret agreement with Frederick,” (31). This shows that Napoleon lied to the animals about which farm he was going to sell wood to. Furthermore, this also illustrates that the animals might not trust Napoleon if he continues to lie to them. Additionally, Napoleon is an untruthful menace who will do nothing to help the farm or the animals. “Day and night we are watching over your welfare. It is for YOUR sake that we drink that milk and eat those apples,” (12). This shows that Napoleon is trying to
Abraham Lincoln once said, “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.” ("Abraham Lincoln Quote"). Lord Acton also said, “Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” (“Lord Acton Quotes”). Both of the quotes show that power is not always a good thing, and can sometimes make good people, do bad things. Animal Farm by George Orwell is a novella about animals rebelling against humans on a farm in England. The novella has been said to be directly related to the Russian Revolution of the early 20th century. Immediately after the animals gained power, the pigs took over as the leaders of the animals. The pigs became corrupt with the power, and may have made conditions worse than they were with humans
Napoleon, a main character in George Orwell's Animal Farm, was very cruel. so why does everyone consider him such an effective leader? In Animal Farm Orwell gives Napoleon, the dictator of the farm, many characteristics that make him an effective leader. Throughout the book Napoleon had a manipulative attitude, a strong support system, and he used scare tactics to intimidate and gain control of the other animals on the farm.
When the time comes to vote for either Napoleon or Snowball, Napoleon uses Snowball to gain power by blaming everything that goes wrong on him to make the animal’s thing negatively about him and his future plans for the farm. George Orwell could make his point about the Russian revolution clearer and easier for the readers by using the animal. Napoleon is breaking the commandment number six which is no animal shall kill any other animal. After the rebellion the animals create the seven commandments. Propaganda plays a big part in the maintenance of power. Most of the animals represent characters in the Russian revolution such as : Napoleon represents Josef Stalin, however, Old Major represents Karl Marx or Vladimir Llyich Lenin, Snowball is like Leon Trotsky and Mr. Jones is like Nicholas the second. The pigs reveal that they have taught themselves to read and write, this is important because it makes them have an advantage over the other animals and it could come in handy at important times when they are trying to fool the animals into believing something. This is made so that the s...

The 1945 novel 'Animal Farm' by George Orwell is an allegory for the Russian Revolution specifically for a variety of themes, such as lies and deceit, manipulation, and dreams and hopes. The novel shows great similarities to the Russian Revolution through these themes. In Animal Farm, Orwell portrays a society that is somewhat messed up that promises things that which people betray, which is rather quite alike our society where one is higher up than another and to be intimidated is very often. Lies and deceit, manipulation and hopes and dreams are themes that are portrayed and displayed in Animal Farm and the Russian Revolution.
This story Animal Farm by George Orwell is a novel about an animal revolution over an oppressive farmer. The irony in the story comes when the pigs turn into the very thing revolted against. They exhibit the same cruelty by treating the other animals the same or even worse than previous owners. This cycle of cruelty is shown in the Russian revolution by Joseph Stalin who is represented by Napoleon in the story. Cruelty in animal farm is shown by the human’s treatment of the animals, and the animal’s eventual treatment of each other and the ironic characteristics of the two.
Animal Farm, by George Orwell, is a short story novel that represents the Russian Red Revolution through talking animals on a farm in England. Mr. Jones, a common farmer that inhabits Manor Farm, owns many animals but treats them poorly. Old Major, one of the lucky ones to live a full life on the farm, is a pig that calls a meeting to order and gives his last wish of one day revolting against the human enemies. Soon after the boar dies of old age, two young pigs, Snowball and Napoleon, take command and make it their duty to overthrow Mr. Jones. However, when the animals do eventually get the humans off the farm and change the name to Animal farm, many problems start to occur. One main problem is finding a moral leader that will help the farm
...evolt and, in real life, it is estimated that somewhere between 4 and 10 million Ukrainian peasants were starved to death by Stalin. In the book, the hens smashed their own eggs to protest Napoleon’s action; in real life, the Ukrainian farmers slaughtered their own livestock before joining a collective as a form of protest. The problem got so out of hand that Stalin eventually executed any farmer found guilty of engaging in the practice.
George Orwell’s allegory to the Russian Revolution addresses the question if power corrupts those who possess it. “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely” is a quote by British historian, Lord Acton, which supports Orwell’s answer to the question. Lord Acton’s statement means that a person’s sense of morality lessens as his or her power increases. This is directly relevant to Animal Farm because Napoleon is quickly corrupted by power. He begins with good intentions of freeing the farm from the tight restrictions and hardships under Mr. Jones. However, as Napoleon gained more power, his morality lessened. The power became addictive and it soon consumed Napoleon. Orwell also addresses the overall problem of dictators rising
Dictators cannot obtain power just off of force, but a with combination of tactics and support. George Orwell, the author of Animal Farm depicts the events that happened during the Russian Revolution under a dictator, using a comparison of Napoleon, a fictional character who takes full authority of a farm. One of many real life dictators include, Ne Win who gradually takes over in power. Napoleon, a dictator in Animal Farm shares multiple similarities with Ne Win, a dictator from Burma. Both Napoleon and Ne Win slyly bring their way into power, oppress individual rights of their citizens, and mercilessly slaughter their people.
Animal Farm by George Orwell is a satire of the Russian Revolution that took place during the late 1930s. Orwell uses vibrant characters such as Snowball, Old Major, and Napoleon to represent some of Russia’s horrific past. While Old Major represents the idea of revolution and Snowball represents the idea of industrialism, Napoleon represents the totalitarian dictatorship in Russia. Animal Farm is a good example of what happened to Russia during this time period. While Animal Farm could represent any dictatorship, it more specifically represents the totalitarianism brought on by Joseph Stalin through communism.
The most important trait of a leader is selflessness. To be selfless means to put others before yourself and care about others needs more than your own. Selflessness is what separates a leader from a boss. A boss just tells people what to do while a leader shows them how to do it and even helps out. Napoleon a character from George Orwell’s, Animal farm does not have this very important trait.
In George Orwell’s Animal Farm, a main theme is that power corrupts those who possess it. A definition of corruption is,“dishonest or fraudulent conduct by those in power, typically involving bribery.” Orwell develops this idea through the character Napoleon in various ways. Looking back in the book, the animal’s rebellion quickly turned political and revolved around, “Leader, Comrade Napoleon (Orwell 81)”. The power Napoleon possed was executed through lies and selfishness, aided by the lack of intellectual ability in the other animals. The corruption of Napoleon’s power is displayed when he favors himself, along with the other pigs, and eventually the dogs, who all get better rations of food compared to the other animals. Another main demonstration of how power corrupts Napoleon is how he separates himself from the other animals on the farm, displaying his feelings if superiority to the other animals. A ceremonial nature develops towards Napoleon. The last way power corrupts Napoleon is how he acts recklessly; killing other animals and lying about
“History consists of a series of swindles where the masses are first lead into revolt by the promise of Utopia, and then, when they have done their job, enslaved all over again by their new masters”- George Orwell. During the Russian Revolution, Joseph Stalin and Leon Trotsky rose to power to lead the new Soviet Union. But Stalin quickly overthrew Leon, and using the KGB, gained complete control of the populace. George Orwell wrote, “Animal Farm” inspired by the key players of the Revolution. In the novella “Animal Farm”, Orwell’s characters utilize faulty logic, propaganda, and literary devices in order to enhance the theme that power can corrupt.
