In 1927, the television was invented. This invention led to the progression of entertainment and mass media. Also in the 1920s, the characters within The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald were busy partying and spreading lies like there were no consequences. However, these characters had no need for mass media when spreading these lies. These lies and deceitful ways are mainly revolved around the characters goals , which mostly always involve money. While the characters in this novel have the goal of obtaining more wealth, in the end, they realize that they want more.
The namesake of the novel, Jay Gatsby, has goals in life which consists on obtaining wealth to achieve his true goal of winning over Daisy Buchanan.There are many quotes within the novel that show how Gatsby only acquired new money to impress Daisy. The narrator of this novel states how Gatsby works to obtain the object of his affection. “The modesty of the demand shook me. He had waited five years and bought a mansion where he dispensed starlight to casual moths--so that he could come over some afternoon to a stranger 's garden.” This quote is the best example of how Gatsby works to achieve his goal of being with Daisy. Mr. Buchanan tends to dive head first into any and every situation. The narrator of this novel, Nick Carraway, gives insight into just how careless Tom truly is. “They were careless people, Tom and Daisy – they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money.” (179) Nick’s quote regarding the Buchanans, shows how they disregard others for the simple fact that they can because they have the money to do so. Regarding the fact that Tom has old money, Daisy married him for the convenience and for the lifestyle. Eventually boring of Daisy, he falls for his mistress Myrtle Wilson but still in the end, Tom stays with the woman he believes is best for his life and love,
