SLIDE 1 Good Morning/afternoon Mr Vega and Students Today I will be talking about imperialism in the American Revolution. SLIDE 2 Imperialism is when a empire or nation extends the authority over another colony or country. In this case, it was Great Britain holding authority over the American people. However, the revolution was anti-imperialism because the American people led by George Washington wanted to be free of British Rule. SLIDE 3 This started when Great Britain were left in a huge debt after the French and Indian War in 1763. The British Parliament said it had fought the long and costly war to protect the American people from the French in Canada. Parliament said it was right to tax the American colonists to help pay bills …show more content…
But a few years earlier, 2000 Tar Heels (North Carolinian citizens) farmers led a rebellion due to the tax they were paying and the amount of property that was being taken away by the British.. However, the Governor and his troops quickly put an end to the rebellion in the Battle of Alamance. SLIDE 6: Much of the violence occurred in Boston and in 1768, 4000 British troops stormed Boston in order to suppress smuggling. The British Parliament threatened to charge Massachusetts (citizens in Boston) for treason but they were not at all intimidated. Colonists then went on to boycott British goods forcing panicky soldiers to kill 5 colonists sparking outrage. Then in 1773, Samuel Adams and the sons of liberty boarded 3 ships and threw over 342 shipments of tea into the harbour in protest of the British Parliament tax on tea. This was known as The Boston Tea Party. From here the Revolution had begun. SLIDE 7 Rebellion groups which included George Washington and other commanders and generals based many of their revolutionary ideas around French enlightenment
The British colonies in America from the time they were established up until around 1763 had a policy of Salutary Neglect. Salutary Neglect meant that the British would not interfere with the colonies national or even international affairs. This benefitted the colonies, they got to experience some forms of democracy, and they also were able to experience independence in a way though they took it for granted. The British after the Seven Years War, which was fought on American soil, for the Americans protection, decided that the colonies should be required to pay for it in taxes. Britain was in debt, and their economy was in a recession, so the well off colonies tax money would have helped them considerably. The tax would only be the beginning to a long line of British policies further upsetting the colonial people.
Before the Boston Massacre even occurred, tensions were high in the city of Boston between the Bostonians and the British. At this time people were just getting over the Stamp Act and were now angered by the new taxes also known as the Townshend Duties. This new tax caused Bostonians to become more aggressive causing the British to send more soldiers to impose the laws of Parliament and to restore order among the people. The arrival of more soldiers only caused more of an uproar between the people of Boston and the red coats. Bostonians went out of their way to harass British soldiers whenever they got the chance, but on March 5, 1770 both sides acted unacceptably resulting in the Boston Massacre (84-85).
After the French and Indian War ended in 1763, Great Britain had nearly gone bankrupt paying for the war. The British thought it was only logical to start new taxes against the colonists. After all, to the British, they had fought the war in the name of the colonies and in what they believed was in their best interest. Many different types of taxes came and went to help pay for the debt. Over time, the
After the French and Indian War, the British government decided to make the American colonies pay a large share of the war debt with new taxes that they issued. The English ...
In the 1770’s the American colonists were being taxed too much by the British and they started to want their independence. Britain was taxing the colonists to pay their debts from the French and Indian War. The colonists started to fight back by tarring and feathering some tax collectors. Britain sent troops to the colonies which caused more problems.
On March 5th, 1770 the colonists were going to protest against the British rule because they were being unfair to the colonists, with taxes being passed without the colonists’ approval. The proclamation of 1763 didn’t help stopping people from settling across the Appalachian mountains even though people fought for it. Also each house had to house and feed a soldier. Many other taxes on different items also caused colonists to be angry. Many started to protest one of these protests had the colonists in front of government building with weapons the British soldiers then fired killing five and injuring others. There was not a massacre on March 5, 1770 in Boston because there was not a massacre on March 5, 1770 in Boston because less than ten colonists
Imperialism is when a mother nation takes over another nation and become its colony for political, social, and economical reasons. Imperialism is a progressive force for both the oppressors (mother country) and the oppressed (colony), majorly occurring during the late 19th and early 20th century. It had more negative effects than positive effects due to its domination to other nations.
Imperialism is a policy of a country’s empire that extends its military power across other lands to get more contry of a area or region. England imperised the places that they did to ether get control over land. To get better access of trade, or just wanted to have more military power in the areas. The affected regions that England imperialized was intended to get access to more trade and to have a greater impact on the regions they were in.
“Is there a single trait of resemblance between those few towns and a great and growing people spread over a vast quarter of the globe, separated by a mighty ocean?” This question posed by Edmund Burke was in the hearts of nearly every colonist before the colonies gained their independence from Britain. The colonists’ heritage was largely British, as was their outlook on a great array of subjects; however, the position and prejudices they held concerning their independence were comprised entirely from American ingenuity. This identity crisis of these “British Americans” played an enormous role in the colonists’ battle for independence, and paved the road to revolution.
The Boston Massacre came about because the British troops came into town and tried to enforce the Townshend Act, which placed a tax on tea, paper, glass and some other products from England (History.com). The people of Boston hated this idea and rapidly started to rebel. At this point people believed that the British were the first to start the confrontation, but they were wrong. The colonists started the riot. The colonists started throwing things at the soldiers, such as snowballs, sticks and rocks (Rebecca Beatrice Brooks).
The Boston tea party was a brief incident among many, composing, economic, and political crisis that ultimately caused a revolution. These events consisted of The French and Indian war, the Stamp Act, the Townshend Revenue Act, the Tea Act, and of course the Boston Tea Party. The incident caused by the colonies infuriated the British government therefore as punishment parliament responded to the abuse with the Coercive Acts of 1774 . When the thirteen colonies once again decided to resist the British troops revolution spread. “We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately.” This act later on lead to the American Revolutionary War, were years later independence was
April 19th, 1775 the American Revolution was triggered by many of reasons, two of them would be the Boston Tea Party and Taxation. A group of Boston Patriates dressed as Native Americans pitched over three hundred trunks of cargo that was placed on the British tea ships, into the depths of Pearl Harbor. The reasoning behind the sneaky disagreement was the British government for the Tea Tax. The colonists were irritated because they were getting taxed by a distant government to pay for the debt from the French and Indian war that occurred in 1756 to 1763. Some of the Tax Acts such as, Townshend Act and Stamp Act were imposed and repealed.
Imperialism means a policy of extending a country’s power and influence through diplomacy or military force. During the turn of the 20th century, the United States used this policy when conquering and controlling countries that they helped win their independence, but then the US would turn and say they weren't ready, so they took them in. They called this the White Man’s Burden where the United States thought it was their duty to take the countries in and protect them and force them to change their culture and way of life. There are many negatives and positives to this policy. Overall though, the United States was right for getting involved or taking over, and helping the other countries get on their feet after we helped these countries
The imperialism of the years 1450-1750 AD spurred the creation of colonies by Western European nations, which include Spain, Britain, France, and the Netherlands, within the “New World,” or the Americas. Due to the creation of these colonies, the “New World” and the “Old World” exchanged various crops, livestock, and many more goods. This is known as the Columbian Exchange. The Columbian Exchange vastly changed the culture and many aspects of the indigenous people of the Americas and the people of Europe.
With the end of the French and Indian wars, the first worldwide war, the British found themselves with a huge national debt. The only reason they won the war was that their treasury lasted longer than the French treasury. As part of the agreement for peace, the French offered to give all their holdings in America to the British. These new acquisitions were a problem for the British parliament because now they needed to stop settlers from the British colonies going into the new land in fear that the Indians would attack them. Therefore, to defend the colonists from Indians (and vice versa) the British parliament decided that the colonists should pay a small tax (compared to was paid
