Ethic is connected with what the correct conduct within society is. It relies on what the majority is doing or saying instead of laws or what is right or wrong in a situation. Ethics derived from the Greek word ethos meaning character, which refers to my previous statement of the major concerns for the upright people, those that are reliable, and the ones that exemplify the appropriate conduct suitable within society’s line of approval. “Ethics challenge us to use the difficult practical task of applying norms and standards to ever new and changing circumstances”(Center for Journalism Ethics, 2015). Ethics are the foundation of the criminal justice system. It allows us to create and developed our moral reasoning, our role in society, what society as a whole consider a fair, just, or acceptable punishment for those “breaking the rules”. Ethics also help us understand what the characteristics we believe are criminal activities are. Therefore ethics allows our criminal justice system to work smoothly and more efficiently. …show more content…
The role that ethics plays within the court system is more than we can fully comprehend.
For starters when it comes to lawyers it’s not always winning every case that you come across, but it’s the matter of representing your client in the best possible way that you can, it is keeping their confidentiality agreement, provide them with the best options as possible and keeping an open and honest
relationship. Just like we expect for the attorneys to be following the rules and being the best that they can be, we also have to think about our judges. Judges have to exemplify ethical values by remaining fair and honest, they shouldn’t have any pre conceive ideas of how they will rule before they hear and examine a case. Acceptance of bribery is one thing that I believe would change the credibility of how honest a judge. Ethics plays a big role in corrections, especially because it houses many unethical individuals. Officers are the only authority figures within prison; therefore they have to be with ethical guidelines so that they don’t risk abusing their power. In order for a prison to run effectively, everyone within the walls have to practice ethical behaviors. The role that ethics plays in the investigation side of criminal justice is
The Moral Philosophy of Ethics as defined by Cyndi Banks is defined as “a branch of philosophy concerned with the study of questions of right and wrong and how we ought to live, Ethics involves making moral judgements about what is right and wrong, good or bad.(2).” Ethics in the criminal justice department is important because it justifies ones actions. In The Lucifer Effect by Phillip Zimbardo and Hard Measures by Jose A. Rodriguez, Jr. there are many scenarios of ethical dilemmas that need to be questioned.
Each position in criminal justice holds power and responsibility, and therefore, it is very important that said people in those positions do not abuse it. Unethical behavior in the criminal justice system takes away trust and respect from authority, and as a consequence, the law is more easily disregarded if the people lack faith in the system. It can, also, contribute to crime and/or cause citizens to not report crimes. Society should have indubitable confidence in the men and women of the criminal justice system. Law enforcement officers violating even the smallest rule could lead to more serious infractions. Syed (1997) states, "Every instance of corruption bends or violates a rule or law and, similar to the granting of impunity, may contribute to an officer's perceptions of the law as applying differently to different people and increase the ease with which violations can be rationalized." Having less than ethical persons in our criminal justice system can lead to a weakened society, the ruining of lives, and even add to crime.
Police ethics are extremely important because ethics are the typical of “fair and honest conduct” (pg 460). People may have a different definition of what is fair and what is honest, and there are different circumstances where officers may not be able to be honest; such as covert investigations. Society in general determines what our ethical standards and moral principles are. Individual morals vary among all of us as they are what we as an individual consider to be right or wrong. We also have morals that are set by society. These are what we as a society consider to be right or wrong and may go hand in hand with individual morals. Morals change as society and people change, therefore we as a country have to adapt to what the changing morals are.
Merriam-Webster defines ethic as “the discipline dealing with what is good and bad and with moral duty and obligation”. As new technology enters today’s market, ethics and morals are not always clear to everyone. Ethics and morals can differ from one person to another, this factor along with the uncertainty that comes with new technology.
In this research, the researcher will discuss a pattern or a practice that was used in the past by the criminal justice system and considered ethical, but not so by today’s standards. The researcher will explain what change resulted in a societal acceptance of a higher ethical standard making sure to apply an ethical theory. An existing criminal justice practice that is unethical and should become a thing of the past will be presented and supported with evidence methodology for considering the shift.
Law enforcement professions ensure obedience to the laws. The judiciary officials are judicial authorities of a country. Correction is the action or process of correct something. Law enforcement professionals, judiciary officials, and corrections all are important to the criminal justice system. It is important to know the purpose of each branch. Justice is not the main virtue of the constitution, but due process is. The judiciary officials have the final say in a court ruling; therefore, I think that the judiciary branch is the most important branch of the criminal justice system.
When looking at the criminal justice system, the belief is that in order for justice to occur an individual must pay for the crime they committed. This mindset has created a shift in the values related to the importance of a conviction, whether it is ethical or not. As society begins to unfold, situations transform from a black or white state to grey where ethical judgements are needed to decipher the multitude of morals, views, and opinions encompassed within. Ambiguous social questions arise as to the right or wrong action to take, this is referred to as ethical issues (Pollock, 2015). Ethical issues are difficult to fully comprehended and a prime example is if a conviction means justice for prosecutors. Having a false or simplistic idea
Equally important, ethics can define as “consist of the right or wrong and of the morality of choices that a person makes and the society accepts. Concerning the business, Ethic is the application of moral standards in the working environment. The most of the times to be ethical is doing what the law requires” (shrm.org, 2015).

Ethics serves as a vital crux of society. We learn through our interactions with others as we progress through life. The role of ethics is very important in the field of law enforcement and criminal justice because of the required quick response to criminal activity, the ability to make life or death decisions, and the ability to collect correct legal evidence. There are many cases in today's law enforcement where decisions are made using insignificant ethics or morals. Children from a young age need to start understanding appropriate ethics and morals, they should be taught the difference between right and wrong. As children grow, some may begin a career in law enforcement and criminal justice, these children will have foundational knowledge
Ethics is the branch of philosophy dealing with values relating to human conduct, with respect to the rightness & wrongness of certain actions and to the goodness and badness of the motives and end of such actions.
The defense lawyers and prosecutors share common characteristics as officers of a court of law. However, when it comes to professional ethics are a world apart in actual prosecutions. Both groups have very specific ethical responsibilities to their clients, the administration of justice and the court itself. During a trial, these differences in the ethical obligations define the motives and actions of both parties. The defense attorney is ethically obligated to yield to the decisions of their customers. Unless the customer is clear that she wants her lawyer to do what they see fit, a defense lawyer can only offer advice and suggest a course of action (Keyes, 2014). Plaintiff attorneys on the other side have full autonomy. They can take your case in any direction they please and can implement their own strategies for the courtroom in an attempt to obtain a conviction. While your client is technically the people in your area of practice, the public has no voice in the actions of a prosecutor and an attorney is not ethically obligated to comply with your preferences.
