The freedom that America offered immigrants extended far beyond just the freedom from religious persecution. Mary’s father was restricted to what jobs he could perform by his Orthodox Jewish community in Russia, but in America he had a choice. Her father chose to shed his Jewish identity, which he was not able to do back in Russia, as it would have made him an outcast in his Russian community. As Mary mentions, he was no longer tied down by religious superstitions or other restrictions that existed in Russia, for seemingly the first time he had complete control of what he chose to do with his life (Antin, 160). According to Coming to America: A History of Immigration and Ethnicity in American Life, between 1880 and about World War I, the vast majority of Eastern European Jews and Southern Italians came to the United States populating neighborhoods in New York and the Lower East Side is the best example. One thing, which was common to the immigrant experience is that, all immigrants come to the United States as the “land of opportunity”. They come to America with different types of expectations that are conditioned by their origins and families. But every immigrant comes to America wanting to make himself/herself into a person, to be an individual and to become somebody. In this case, the author showed in Bread Givers, Sarah’s desire to make herself into something and bring something unique to America, which only she can bring. It is an effort to understand the immigrants, particularly Jewish immigrants, from a woman’s point of view. The book shows that it was a challenge for Jewish immigrant children, particularly females, on the account of the intensity of their family’s connections and obligations that was so critical for the immigrant communities. This was true for the immigrants who came to settle in the neighborhoods like the one Sarah and her family settled in.
This idea of struggling to assimilate in America can first be seen in Bread Givers, by Anzia Yezierska. Anzia uses the narrator Sarah, to tell the story of family who newly moved to America and is living in New York City. From Sarah’s narration, we can see the idea that some first-generation immigrants had a resistance to assimilating to American culture, whereas their children quickly became Americanized. Sarah describes her father Reb Smolinsky as the patriarch of the family, who is often accused of keeping his children only for their wages. By her father relying on his daughters to bring in money for the family, he can continue to practice Torah like he did in the old country.
Immigrants came to the United States for different reasons, but Laskin stated the three main reasons were “land, freedom, and hope.” (9) If they immigrated to the United States, they could experience what other immigrants sent letters home about. America did not realize at this time that it was a natural and necessary course that the country was having to go through. The dominant group did not understand why this was having to happen in America because they thought that immigrant would cause a problem in the country. During the 1870’s and 1880’s, there was no feeling of threat posed by the immigrants on Americans that would make them feel like there was going to be a problem in the nation at all. The labor unions had originally allowed only the immigration of contract laborers, but by 1896 the American Federation of Labor had followed Gompers in his aggression to immigration, and American workers continued to stand against free immigration until the restriction movement finally succeeded. Even though Progressives and Socialists had a strong democratic placement, they changed their minds and began to support immigration because they did not want their jobs or lives to be interrupted by excessive immigration. Mary went from not even attending school in Russia, to star pupil in America, illustrating the promise that America had to offer immigrants. American afforded Mary with opportunities that were impossible in her home country of Russia. Even though Frieda also lived in America, her circumstances represent the realities of the Old World. For instance, Frieda’s only way of learning about American history was through Mary, as she was not afforded time to read while working. By not attending school, Frieda did not only became stuck in the Old World mentality in terms of education but also in terms of marriage. Her father “had put Frieda to work out of necessity. The necessity was hardly lifted when she had an offer of marriage, but my father would not stand in the way of what he considered her welfare” (Antin, 218). Frieda was not given the opportunity to marry for love, as was the American way, but was married out of necessity for her welfare, reminiscent of the Old World mentality. Public education provided Mary with the opportunity to marry not because she had to in order to survive, but because she wanted to. Still developing, these colonies formed their own identity, at times violating the very reason for immigration: to escape the ties of religious regulations. Upholding personal beliefs over the emergence of new ideas, and the possibility of losing others to another faith spurred the controversy to expel those threatening the colony. As a result, one could not attain complete religious freedom. Instead, families formed based on common belief, or aspirations: those with the desire for land, and large farming moved to the Carolina’s, while those wishing for a Puritan society moved to Massachusetts. The traveling of family immigrants, coupled with the desire for success allowed the immigrants to find new life in the uncharted territory, and as a whole, establish a unique structural identity.
The early 1900s was a period of mass immigration for the United States. At the turn of the 20th century religious preferences and political persecution were major reasons behind immigration. Many Jews came to America in search of freedom. People of other religious backgrounds also came because the United States was composed of a diverse group of people with different religious preferences. The immigrants did not feel like outcasts in America. Political persecution in Russia forced many of its citizens to emigrate. Most chose to come to America because the country was culturally diverse and they could feel safe there. Economic problems at this time also drove people to America. Many countries around the world were just starting to develop so they were poor and lacked jobs. Their citizens were in desperate need of money; so many fathers immigrated to America in search of a job to support their family with. This was a common occurrence among Asian immigrants. Only later did their families join them through new laws and quotas in the United States immigration policy. However, this soon led to an enormous number of immigrants so the policy was revised to lower quotas and accept more skilled people and less family members.
Millions of new immigrants came to the United States during the last three decades of the nineteenth century and the first decade of the twentieth century. In contrast to the earlier American settlers who were mostly from British, Irish or German backgrounds, the new immigrants came from the nations of southern and western Europe such as Italy, Russia, Poland and Greece. Most of these immigrants were attracted to America because they were trying to escape from the problems they faced in their home countries.
