In The Road the author keeps making the man or the boy say “We are carrying the fire”.
They keep saying this because it makes the boy and the man have hope that something good will come along, and to keep their spirits up even though there life is very hard and tiring. One scene in the book is when the boy asked the man if they would ever eat people, the man said no they would not the reason why was because “we are carrying the fire”. The man is showing the boy that carrying the fire is protecting them, no matter what happens to them that if they are carrying the fire they will be alright. The boy knows that if they are carrying the fire they have a sign of hope and that the world is not over and light will come through. Another scene in the book that brings up carrying the fire is when the father is dying. When the father is dying he tells the son that he now has to carry the fire alone, the boy hesitates because he doesn’t think he is ready for it and he doesn't want his father to leave him but the father knows he is ready. The son knows that he will always be carrying the
fire. In the movie I am Legend the characters bring up the Bob Marley quote “Light up the darkness”. They bring that up in the movie because the main character Neville is in a world where “darkseekers” have taken over NYC. It is very quiet and lonely and it doesn't look like their is a lot of hope left, but he and another character Anna reference the quote. They reference the quote because it gives them hope and it shows them that they will eventually find or make a better life for themselves. Neville in the movie is trying to bring light back in to the world and back into his life, during the movie he keeps having scenes with the darkseekers and he is trying to find a cure for them so he can light up the darkness. In the movie Neville has to kill his dog because it got bitten and afterwards he does try to kill himself but someone saves him. Anna and her son save him from the darkseekers, Anna and the boy show him that even at his worst moment he should still have hope and that something better will come. The authors have very good values about hope and life, they shows those values well in the movie and book. In the book and the movie it shows the watchers that you shouldn't take anything for granted and you should be happy with whatever you have. At the worst times of your life you could be thinking that there is no hope left and no good can come out of it, but the movie and the book show that, that concept is completely wrong. Even though the movie and the book are not the happiest movies/books they do teach you very good life lessons. They show these life lessons in post apocalyptic worlds because most people think of these worlds as hopeless and no good can come out of them. But the authors prove that even at the worst times you can still have hope and some good will come out of it.
The book, “The House of the Scorpion” by Nancy Farmer is a 3 time award winner and a fantastic novel in the genre of utopia and dystopia. Matt is a clone saved from the burden of having a blunted intelligence. Evidence from the book supports this was a faulty move. The novel also says why El Patron blunts their intelligence; it's fully out of greed. Overwhelmingly, it seems that these things played a big part in the outcome of the novel, and why Matt is such a interesting, dimensional character in the book.

He always wants to help someone else in need before himself, whereas the father is only concerned about their own personal wellbeings. He “is the one” who worries about their ethical choices and wants to help a stranger in any way he can (259). McCarthy proves the importance of the boy’s spirit of love for other people when his dad dies and he must take the leap of faith to continue along the road with a new family. Despite all the corrupted people they encountered beforehand, the boy meets someone who is “carrying the fire” (129). This mantra by the father and son, symbolizes hope and humanity. The qualities Steinbeck labels for a writer to create in his writings can be summed up in “carrying the fire” since the two never did give up. It is the greatness of the heart and spirit Steinbeck notes that is “inside [them]. [And] [i]t [is] always there” (279). It is noteworthy that even in the midst of death and ashes, the two are able to hold onto their relationship and sanity. The “good guys” can continue to carry meaning and structure in their lives, even in a time where society turned into a battle to survive on the remnants of
G.K.Chesterton once quoted, “The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.” The novel Three Day Road by Joseph Boyden, recounts the struggles of a Canadian soldier through his tedious and terrible experiences fighting for his country against the Germans. Throughout the novel, the protagonist was disgusted by the blood and trauma war brings, however, he knew that it was imperative to kill, or else he would not have survived. In war, it is kill or be killed, someone who is wise will kill to survive and protect his country, as well as avenge his family or comrades.
A noun also known as realism—verisimilitude. The technique is used overall in writing. Authors write historical fiction books with hints toward real life events or seem as if these could happen today; therefore, these books possess a high verisimilitude. In the short story The Devil and Tom Walker, written by Washington Irving, the protagonist Tom Walker, is characterized as being a negative man. This is demonstrated through Tom Walker being characterized as being meager, outspoken, fearless, greedy, stubborn, and unloving.
Greed also influenced many of the decisions that characters have formulated throughout the book. For example, Jerry Cruncher chose to become a grave digger for the profit gotten from it, which caused many problems in his family. When Jerry Jr. follows his father into the night he witnesses his father committing a horrifying crime that he, “Knew very well knew what it would be; but, when he saw it, and saw his honoured parent about to wrench it open, he was so frightened, being new to the sight, that he made off again, and never stopped until he had run a mile or more” (Dickens 184). Had Jerry not been so acquisitive, he would most likely have chosen not to go into that profession. This would prevent Jerry Jr. from being scarred by his father's bad decisions and possibly decrease Jerry’s drinking due to guilt he has after grave digging. Additionally, when C.J. Stryver proposes to Lucie, his motive for it blossoms from greed. While explaining to Carton why he has decided to do this, Stryver admits, "I don't care about fortune: she is a charming creature, and I have made up my mind to please myself: on the whole, I think I can afford to please myself. She will have in me a man already pretty well off, and a

The Crucible, a play written in the 1950’s by American playwright, Arthur Miller, is based on the chaotic witch hysteria in Salem, Massachusetts during the 1600’s. Abigail, a sinful protagonist in the play, is the root to the myriad problems that conspire throughout the play. She is to blame for the executions of innocent citizens, and for acts of lechery between marriages. An important reappearing theme throughout the play is one’s reputation and the extremes the characters would take in order to preserve their name. The characters in The Crucible, particularly, Parris, John Proctor, and Judge Danforth, use the sanctity of their names to prioritize how they will look in the public eye, rather than what is beneficial to them individually.
Redemption is defined as the action of saving or being saved from sin, error, or evil. Throughout life, individuals are faced with numerous incidences of redemption that can be taken up or ignored. Those who choose to take the opportunity are often able to grow mentally and accelerate much further than those who do not. However, what must be taken into account is that true redemption is for oneself rather than for others. For example, redemption by finally getting a well-deserved promotion which impresses others is not truly beneficial redemption. What must occur is happiness for the promotion within. In The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, the employment of redemption as a central idea prevails throughout the novel, specifically in the life
