When most read Robert Frost’s poem, they think that the poem’s theme revolves around the concept of individualism. After all, Frost seems to be referencing a road less traveled; therefore, making his decision more unique and worthwhile. Overall, “The Road Not Taken” is met with much criticism about what the poem is actually about – individualism or rather deception. This has been a frequent topic of discussion among fellow critics including Robert W. French calling the poem “deceptive” because of the use of the simple use of language (French 203). Using a variety of literary techniques, specifically imagery, diction, and tone, Robert Frost successfully characterizes the theme of deception in “The Road Not Taken.”

“Two words diverged in a wood, and I – I took the one less traveled by…” (18-19). These particular lines highlight Frost’s informal use of diction since it is also easy to understand, unlike other poets. This allows readers to connect and even create their own beliefs regarding the themes of Frost’s poetry, ultimately deceiving the reader since there is not a universal theme. “Once his work came into circulation, its freshness and deceptive simplicity captivated audiences…” (Ellis 1002). Since the poem was not difficult for the reader to interpret, it began to lead to misinterpretations of the poem. Many of its readers scratch the surface of the meaning of the poem, but never fully understand the deeper understanding, due to use of an informal and simple diction. Because of this style of writing, Frost’s poems became popular and much of that success can be attested to his simplistic writing techniques and most importantly diction. “Much of Frost’s contribution to American literature came from his ability to speak in a poetic but plain language to both common people and scholars…” (Beachman 625). “Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back” (15-16). “I shall be telling this with a sigh somewhere ages and ages hence…” (16-17). In line 16 is when the tone of the poem begins to change. In the beginning, Frost was talking in the present and then he changes to where he is imagining himself in the future. To make this change even more significant, this is the only stanza, to begin with a new sentence. This helps emphasize the change from the previous stanzas and the thoughts they held. “The tone of this poem is another indicator that an important decision is being made…” (“The Road” 196). However, the poem is not solely about the decision between which road to take, but rather poses deeper questions surrounding life. “…I doubted if I should ever come back” (15). The central image that Frost presents, which is the path, provides a clear picture that the reader can focus on in order to reveal something about the poem. The “two roads diverged in a yellow wood'; vividly portray the fact that it is always difficult to make a decision because it is impossible not to wonder about the opportunity that will be missed out on. There is a strong sense of regret before the choice is even made and it lies in the knowledge that in one lifetime, it is impossible to travel down every path that one encounters. In an attempt to make a decision, the traveler "looks down one as far as I could." The road that will be chosen leads to the unknown, as does any choice in life. As much as he may strain his eyes to see how far the road stretches, eventually it surpasses his vision and he can never see where it is going to lead. Frost uses a lot of imagery to inform the reader of the other choices. Both roads had been traveled the same, but had different appearances. The grass could have given the illusion that the road in the second stanza would provide better opportunity. What make it better was “it was grassy and wanted wear” (line 8). It was something that was obviously not for everyone because it seems that the other people take the more popular one. “And both that morning equally lay/ In leaves no step had trodden black” (line 11). No one had yet to pass by on this road since the leaves have fallen. “I kept the first for another day” (line 13). The desire to travel down both paths is expressed and is not unusual, but “knowing how way leads onto way” (line 14). David Wyatt writes, "Nowhere in Frost is the tension between surprise and anticipation, wayward experience and the form into which it is cast or forecast, more acute than in 'The Road Not Taken'" (129). As the poem is read, one cannot help but be pulled into the questions of which road will be chosen, how they differ, and what will become of the traveler. Perhaps some hope to find guidance for their own journeys by seeking answers in Frost's work. According to Michael Meyer, "The speaker's reflections about his choice are as central to an understanding of the poem as the choice itself." (97) Frost himself admits, "it's a tricky poem, very tricky." (Pack 10)
Robert Frost had many events in his life that inspired his poetry such as: the difficulties he experienced throughout his childhood, the struggles with which career path to take, and the travels abroad that led to new friendships. The many trials of Robert Frost’s life were huge inspirations for his poetry, specifically, “The Road Not Taken”. One of the authors of The Reader’s Companion to American Society, Linda Wagner-Martin, acknowledges, “It spoke of despair, of endurance, of failure- of life as many readers had experienced it.” (432) His poetry spoke of the poverty and difficult childhood that his father left Frost and his family to deal with after his death.

Back then, not only did I have absolutely no interest in any literary work, but moreover, had no intension to lye there and analyze a poem into its symbolic definitions. Only now have I been taught the proper way to read a literary work as a formalistic critic might read. With this new approach to literature I can understand the underlying meaning to Robert Frost's "The Road Not Taken". In addition to merely grasping the author's intension, I was able to justly incur that this poem, without directly mentioning anything about life's decisions, is in its entirety about just that.

The two roads in the poem relate to various paths one might be faced with in life. One path “bent in the undergrowth” (5) which means it had taken many times. However, the other path “was grassy and wanted wear” (8). This is the path in one’s life, which seems “unpopular” at the time. Not many people choose the path that is not typically chosen by others. This is what Frost is doing in his poem as he uses these solid metaphors: challenging his readers to “go against the flow” as the man did.
