Justice and knowledge are not easily explained; however, Plato, uses thought experiments to capture vivid images of what the two words actually mean. The Ring of Gyges and the Allegory of the Cave both enlighten the hazy ideas of the true meaning behind knowledge and justice. These readings stretch made me stretch my brain and think about things that have never crossed my mind before. Plato is a wonderful philosopher that explains things vividly so that his readers can fully understand the meaning and his view. In the Ring of Gyges, Plato helps readers understand the true nature of justice. Glaucon and Socrates have conflicting views on justice and injustice and the reader decides which philosopher they agree with. According to the legend, “Gyges was a shepherd in the service of the king of Lydia” (Vaughn 28). All of the sudden, “there was a great storm” and a crack in the Earth appeared and as the intrigued Gyges descended into the ground, he noticed that there was a “hollow brazen horse… [and he] saw a dead body of stature, as appeared to him, more than human, and having nothing on but a gold ring” (Vaughn 28). After testing out the ring in several scenarios, Gyges determines that the ring grants the user to become invisible. With this ring, “he seduced the queen, and with her help conspired against the king and slew him” (Vaughn 28). Glaucon then goes on to explain that if there were to be two magic rings, then no right man would “keep his hands off what was not his own” (Vaughn 28). No matter how hard the man with the ring tries to be just, it is quite impossible to have the whole world at your fingertips and do nothing about it. Glaucon presents an argument against justice in order to pressure Socrates to give a more convincing argument for living a just life. He was unsatisfied with Plato’s counterargument against Thrasymachus. Glaucon wants to believe that justice is good and that living a just life will result in a good life, unlike the Fool in the Leviathan. The Allegory of the Cave by Plato, shows the contrast between sense experience and rationalism. The story explains that in the cave where some people have known nothing of the outside world and can only comprehend what they see based on what little they do know of their cave. The people have come to the conclusion what the shapes represent and what causes them and believe it to be correct and thus believe it as the reality of the world. However what they don’t know is that this is not the world and what they will soon find out is that the things they once saw with their eyes what they smelt, what they heard, what they felt were just shadows of real images and objects cast on the wall by fire. What this does is show that sense experience can be at fault because the one perceiving is at times is ignorant of the fact that they know nothing of the true reality of the world and its workings. One must be showed how things are in order to learn and thus no longer be ignorant but have now begun taking steps towards wisdom.

Plato’s character in “The Ring of Gyges” is trying to convey certain points about human nature and wisdom. In Glaucon’s fictional story, Gyges is a shepherd who stumbles upon a mysterious ring which allows him the power to become invisible. Gyges eventually gives up his lowly life as a shepherd and becomes an authoritative and crooked dictator due to the power of the ring. Glaucon’s main point in this story is that people are inherently immoral and will look out for themselves over the good of others. Due to his assumption about the nature of the human race Glaucon proclaims that in order to keep human’s from causing damage to others our social order should emphasize a government that will contain their constituents. Glaucon also wants Plato to show that a just life is better than an unjust life. It has been shown that when the soul is in harmony, it only acts justly. It is in a person’s best interests to have a healthy soul, which is a just soul, so that the person can be truly happy. This means that by showing justice has an intrinsic value, it can also be concluded that it is better to live a just life opposed to an unjust life. The conclusion that I have drawn is that Plato’s argument against the intrinsic value of injustice is sufficient to prove that the just life is superior, even if the unjust life may be more profitable.

In Book one of the Republic of Plato, several definitions of justice versus injustice are explored. Cephalus, Polemarchus, Glaucon and Thracymicus all share their opinions and ideas on what actions they believe to be just, while Socrates questions various aspects of the definitions. In book one, Socrates is challenged by Thracymicus, who believes that injustice is advantageous, but eventually convinces him that his definition is invalid. Cephalus speaks about honesty and issues of legality, Polemarchus explores ideas regarding giving to one what is owed, Glaucon views justice as actions committed for their consequences, and Socrates argues that justice does not involve harming anybody. Through the interrogations and arguments he has with four other men, and the similarity of his ideas of justice to the word God, Socrates proves that a just man commits acts for the benefits of others, and inflicts harm on nobody.
In Book II of Plato’s Republic, Glaucon seeks to define what justice is and whether it could truly be considered an end in itself. He starts by asserting that there are three types of good. First there are goods that we choose out pure enjoyment and pleasure, these goods have no negative after effects.
