If someone told you pinball was cool again you may beg to differ, or even wonder when it ever was. Yet, it can’t be denied pinball’s popularity is, once again, on the rise. One form of proof is the hottest new gadget around, Apple’s iPad, has a surprise top selling application called Pinball HD. The new game’s gorgeous look and simple fast paced play has seduced a new tech-savvy generation. Pinball’s popularity has always come in waves and although pinball’s demise has been proclaimed many times, it has once again beaten the odds refusing to vanish into oblivion. However, to be part of this most recent resurgence, pinball has had to be innovative and resilient for well over a century.
In the late 1800’s pinball was nothing more than a box with an angled board full of nails called a Bagatelle. Some had legs while others lay upon a table. It had a few numbered holes drilled into the wood so the ball could drop in and amass a score. Seen mainly at fairs and amusement parks, a lack of excitement was its first and most obvious hurtle with curiosity its only attraction. Ultimately, there was little to keep players coming back.
As pinball hung on, eventually, coin operation was added in 1931 but pinball’s format still left a lot to be desired. One enterprising pub owner realized gambling on pinball could spark interest. After inserting a coin you would receive a number of balls. By pulling a coil spring plunger you would launch each ball onto the play field. As the ball ricocheted off pins one hoped it would eventually drain down a high value hole. Attain a certain score and you would be compensated with food, drinks, and even money. What was seen as harmless fun to some was frowned upon by the law. As the first quarter of the 20th ...

Billiards, or more commonly referred to as pool has been played for many decades. In the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century it was played by those of upper class standing in their homes. Over the twentieth century pool shifted roles, becoming part of middle and lower class society. With the class change, pool also moved out of the home and into bars and halls. Pool has been forever transformed; today there are three main groups of pool players to be found in pool halls; professional players: blue collar players, and teenage players.
Baseball was popular the most sport in 1919; players were seen as heroes and celebrities. At this time the players were payed very low wages and the owners of the team made huge profit. Because of this many players were into scams that involved them losing games on purpose. During that time of baseball, players didn’t make as much as they do today.Players would be offered large amount of money that would multiply to several times their salary.
Gambling will forever be a part of American’s pastime. As soon as the New York Knickerbockers organized in 1845 and started competing against other teams, spectators were betting on the outcome (Fleitz 190). In the mid 1800’s, speculations of gambling had reached the news. Three men of the New York Mutuals were banned from baseball for taking $100 each to throw a game to the Brooklyn Eckfords; nevertheless, the men were reinstated within a few years (Rielly 110). The next few decades only had been occasionally marred by gambling scandals. The Black Sox scandal of 1919 rocked the sports world and brought up even more scandals. Baseball’s gambling problems were not always bookies looking for that prized fight; it sometimes involved the role models of the game. Several owners had been linked to the 1919 scandal. Charles Stoneham of the Giants and Arnold Rothstein of the Dodgers were believed to play an important part of the scam (Lieb 189). Baseball slowly rid itself of gambling until the last big scandal hit in the name of Rose. Gambling has been a part of baseball ever since the start and will continue to tarnish the game whenever it is brought up.
While the 1920s was the era really known for sports in America, the love of the games did not diminish going into the next ten years. Throughout the 1930s, the three mainstream sports are still the three in the common era: baseball, basketball, and football (Hatcher). Out of thos...
Basketball is defined as a game where two teams of five play each on a rectangular court, usually indoors (Basketball/Sport). Basketball was invented by James Naismith on December 1, 1891 (Basketball/Sport). The object of basketball is to shoot the basketball through the opposing team’s basket and to out-score them by end of the regulation time limit. If the score is tied at this time, the game will go into overtime until one team wins. While reading about basketball, I found it interesting that when the sport was invented they would nail baskets to balconies with no backboards. This made it easy for spectators (in the balcony) to help their team by either swatting the

The sport of Pickleball was founded in 1965 in Bainbridge Island, a ferry ride from. When Congressman Joel Pritchard, William Bell, and Barney McCallum arrived home after a day of golf, they found their children restless, and tired of the “old” summer activities. They set out to create a game that would entertain them throughout the summer. Their ideas to create the game came from the hopes of creating a game that would be both challenging, but easy to set up and play. When the game first began, materials included ping-pong paddles, and a wiffle ball. Then, they lowered the net on their badminton court. As the game became more popular, people began to make their own paddles using wood jigsaws, and marine plywood. Today, over 100,000 people play Pickleball in the United States. According to Barney McCallum, the game was named, “Pickleball” after the Pichards’s dog Pickles who would often case and run after the ball when played.
The case study highlighted that the new game Wii introduced by the company had the ability to attract individuals considered non-gamers or casual gamers. The Wii was not as powerful or technologically advanced as the Xbox 360 and the PS3, but its success lies in its ability to provide a new means of playing video games. The innovative design of the Wii’s controller, which had built in motion sensors, created a whole new gaming experience for users - on...
The game of basketball is a highly recognized and widely known sport. Basketball was first heard of in the winter of 1891 when a man by the name of James Naismith was told to instruct a physical education class at the Young Men’s Christian Association in Springfield, Massachusetts. Naismith was instructed to put together a game for young men to enjoy while they were at the YMCA. While trying to come up with a brilliant and fun game for these young men, Naismith reminisced back on his childhood in Canada. He remembered a game his friends and him had played all the time: “Duck on a Rock”, which involved trying to knock a large rock off a boulder by throwing smaller rocks at it. Naismith also remembered watching a game of rugby going on in the gymnasium. The game of Rugby involved tossing a ball into a box. After a very short time of trying to make up a game for these young men, Naismith came up with a brilliant idea. Little did he know the game that he came up with just so happened to be one of he most renowned sports in American history. Naismith’s idea pertained to nailing up raised boxes so that players could attempt to throw a ball in the basket. When there were no boxes too be found, he used peach baskets. Supposedly, Naismith came up with all the rules for this game in no more than “about an hour”, according to Alexander Wolff. Shortly after Naismith had invented the game of basketball, graduates of the YMCA traveled internationally which is the main reason as to why this sport is so widely known. The impact basketball has made on the lives of many Americans is incredible in the sense that it has given people the ability to ...
When you think of basketball you probably think of the names LeBron James, Kevin Durant, or Kobe Bryant. Even though these are some superstars of the game there is one man way more important than them and without him they wouldn’t be playing the sport they love. This man goes by the name of Dr. James Naismith. Naismith was a physical education teacher at the YMCA International Training school. One day Naismith had the challenge of finding an indoor game as an “athletic distraction” for the students. Instead of adapting outdoor games like soccer and lacrosse, Naismith remembered a game for his childhood days called duck-on-a-rock where you had to throw a rock at a “duck” on another large rock. To do this it takes extremely good accuracy. From this Naismith created 13 rules for the game

The birth of Esports can contribute most of its discovery to its original roots from the 19th century era (Bellis). To understand the next generation of athlete culture, Esports, it is necessary for individuals to understand the beginnings of the newly bred activity. During the 19th century era video games were often overlooked due to its funky nature, however, the introduction of new technology that allowed individuals to manipulate and control objects was appealing to some (Bellis). One of the very first video games to have been developed was a simple graphical computer application used to resemble virtual Tic-Tac-Toe (Bellis). Although the game was simple in nature and basic in control, ...
