Earlier in his political career, Ronald Reagan, the most vocal conservative Republican in recent years, was criticized for having switched from the Democratic to the Republican Party. He remarked that it was not he who left the Democratic Party; it was the Democratic Party that left him. That is, the basic principles that the conservative Republicans now adhere to were principles that many Americans, including the Democrats, once cherished. When the Democrats began to leave those conservative principles, Reagan had no choice but to leave it. The conservative members of the current Republican Party represents the best possible political choice for people who love freedom, want smaller government and taxes, and value the lives of the unborn.
By 1850, the institution of slavery was tearing the United States apart. The Republican Party began trying to stop the spread of slavery (Anderson 42). In 1856, Abraham Lincoln helped organize the Illinois branch of the new Republican Party. At that time, Lincoln was a political moderate who only wanted to ban slavery in the new territories, but at least the beginning of this party. He tolerated it in the South (Oakes 39). Both Lincoln and Stephen Douglas, who debated each other many times, were ambitious and wanted slavery to end (Oakes 5).
There are three pillars of Modern Conservatism. The first is liberty, or freedom. Conservatives believe that people have the right to life, liberty, property, and freedom from the restrictions of arbitrary force. They use these rights by their natural free will. This means following your own dreams, doing what you want to (so long as you don’t harm others) and reaping the rewards (or facing the penalties). Millions of Americans are convinced that Barack Obama is a good president simply because of his skin color and ethnic background. This thinking is narrow minded and racist. No one attain a certain quality of character because of his or her skin color. They gain greatness, if at all, through the character of their heart. According to Martin Luther King, Jr. people should judge others on the content of their character, not the color of their skin. There should simply be more important qualities in the president than skin color, like the love of liberty and the American rule of law. Americans need to give greater thought to abortion, smaller government, and freedom. These are some of the hallmarks of Republicans and conservative thought.
