The Republic of Uganda is located on the Central- East region of Africa. Home to 35.6 million individuals of Christian and Muslim descent , it is run by President Yoweri Musevni and his Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi as a Presidential democracy. Since becoming president in 1986, Yoweri Museveni has introduced several political and social reforms and has been credited with improving the standard of living for middle class Ugandans. Since the late 1980s Uganda has rebounded from sectarian violence and economic calamity to become relatively diplomatic, secure and affluent.

What is the background of your leader and/or country? What are his/her policy tendencies, personality quirks, etc?
With the help of Tanzanian troops, Yoweri Museveni ousted military dictator Idli Amin in 1979, who was notorious for his human rights abuses. When power was returned to Milton Obote, Museveni then co-founded the National Resistance Movement (NRM), a new rebel army that eventually seized power in 1986. The NRM, with Museveni at the head, “restore relative stability and economic growth to Uganda following years of civil war and repression under Milton Obote and Idi Amin before him.” One of his first acts, as President was to restrict the activity of political parties, and instead ran Uganda as a one party state. With the outbursts of sectarian violence that had been in Uganda’s recent past, he believed that “Uganda was too fraught with ethnic and religious divisions to allow traditional party competition”. Museveni’s administration was filled with well educated and experienced men who used Western-backed economic reforms, discovered oil reservoirs, and focused on social issues such as education and healthcare...

... Uganda, continues to cause conflict in DR Congo, Southern Sudan, and CAR. Recently Uganda removed troops from South Sudan and placed them in CAR in order to quell the sectarian and rebel violence. Museveni’s administration is only awaiting thumbs up from two Western nations, and then it will deploy around 2000 soldiers to join efforts to stop the war in the CAR.
Uganda obviously wants to protect its economic interests as well. It hopes to maintain friendly relationships with its neighbors to ensure its route to the Indian Ocean, and to continue trade with South Sudan.

What impact can he or she realistically have on regional and world affairs?
With its connections to Western nations, and as a founding member of the AU, Uganda has a strong foothold regionally, specifically with East African countries. Internationally however, Uganda does not have a large impact.
