The Representation of Children in the Media
I am writing about how children are represented in the media, after a
group investigation carried out to see how they are portrayed in
different papers; local newspapers, tabloids and broadsheets. We were
looking to see if newspapers showed positive or negative images of
children and how they portrayed them in general.
In local papers there are usually articles of local news from around
the area, items for sale and advertisements. Local papers highlight
local stories and issues. Local papers usually have the scores or
information about local teams in the sport section. The local papers
are distributed to a specific area and usually contain news about the
area and the people who live there. Reporters and journalists gather
important stories, but other stories are sponsored or sent in by local
organizations e.g. local businesses or organizations like school,
youth clubs the local police who place articles. This is really
community communication.

The aim of this report is to discuss the ways in which the media reports on crimes committed by children and teenagers. Using the James Bulger murder it will analyse and evaluate how the reporting of crime affects public perceptions of children, teenagers and crime. It will consider how the media influences governments, policies and legislation. The report will argue how the reporting of previous, high-profile cases concerning children and crime have impacted on the Youth Justice system and on society.
Have you ever met someone who acted just as teens are stereotyped? Not many people have because they do not exist. Real teens are poorly portrayed in the media and are the complete opposite of their stereotypes. Books and TV shows make teens out to be wild or crazy, irresponsible and out of control. One hardly ever hears about teen-heroes. Instead, newspapers and magazines are plastered with stories of teens and crime. And while looking at commercial billboards and other related media, the regular teen seems to be sex-crazed and image-obsessed.

Miss Representation addresses the important issue of how women are presented in the media and how it can badly influence women. This film does a good job on delivering such a powerful message to women. I, myself, was in shock of how the media is portraying women to be represented as the “sexual” and “seductive” figure. The statistic that I found to be very eye opening was how American teenagers spend about 10 hours and 45 minutes a day looking at the media. I was just mind blown how this is in fact true of this day and age because I, myself, spend about close to that amount of time. While there were a lot of things to cover on, I will mainly focus on how women’s bodies are represented through the media.
The effect of the media on young children is especially salient. Young children often learn how to act and behave from what they observe at home, from the adults and older peers they come in contact with, and from what they see on television.
The Representation of Teenagers in the Media Throughout the media we see representation of teenagers. This can show teenagers in positive and negative lights. A media panic, or often referred to as a moral panic, is a term that describes how the media is formulating issues amongst our society. Over time, our culture has shifted and caused many conclusions regarding media panics and the relationship between youth and the media culture. Based upon previous knowledge and course readings, I have drawn a very disturbing conclusion; this being that no matter what age, children are willing or non-willingly now under surveillance to determine what kind of role media is playing in their lives. With what I have gathered from the readings and class lectures, most authors strongly believe that different forms of media directly influence children's thinking or perception. What authors and researchers continue to imply is that there is a direct correlation to what youth today see in different forms of media and their behaviours.
Most people often look down upon youth, They are often represented as bad people despite the good things they can do. The public often don't think twice, we see something wrong such an illegal spray painting, intoxicated teenager on the street so they instantly stereotype them despite the good things they can do. For example they can contribute to the society allowing for a better community and have a better world to live in. Not as many people care about adults doing bad things adults do, other than teenagers people care a lot more when the story is about a teenager doing bad things. The news exploits things and puts youth in the spotlight as bad people. They can be taken into this stereotype because of the few bad things youth do, Its not just youth then can do bad things, there are many many adults who behave badly who we don't
