The Reflection Of The Misconceptions Of Social Work

Misconceptions of social work are rampant. Social workers are often portrayed in television shows as underpaid workers that split families apart. Regardless, following three years of working closely with these specialists, I have picked up a more profound comprehension of how critical their work is. I am at a stage in my career where I am searching out instruction that will make me more efficient in creating plans and providing services for vulnerable people. I am confident that the skills I will gain from completing a social work master’s degree will help me collaborate with people in need and aid sustainable growth in their lives.

An introduction to social work while I was in need quickly dispelled negative stereotypes I unwittingly held.

I worked on the micro businesses of women facing domestic abuse and poverty in their homes. I inadvertently became a mentor for 20 children in the community. I confronted considerable intercultural communication challenges that exposed me to the true meaning of diversity in the workplace. The most important lesson I learned was the value of making human connections while offering help to others. During my time in Cambodia, I often had to take off my professional hat and be a friend first to gain the trust of my clients. My friendly approach led to having close relationships with the women. I have carefully strategized the life changes necessary to accommodate my education. I work full time at the National Center for Missing Children, and I have spoken to the managers that are in full support of my goal to complete a degree. I have also changed to working overnight so that I am available during the day for study. I make reports for missing children and sexually exploited children, but I am actively pursuing a job within case management to gain experience with those responsibilities. I am excited for the opportunity to expand my child welfare and victim support knowledge in the Catholic School of Social Services. I have also become very interested in working with children with long-term and terminal illnesses and will be actively pursuing voluntary experiences within hospitals while I continue studying. I feel that my experience will help me thrive in the course and will help me fulfill my goal of gaining clinical social work
