Effective writing can be an essential task in many career fields. It is another way of communication that can be viewed by numerous people at any given time. Learning to be able to do this effectively can be challenging, but yet very rewarding in the end. During this course I have been able to refine some of my skills in writing and learned various methods to improve this process. Let’s discuss why I write, my beliefs about writing, and how that has changed over the past semester. I have written many papers in my life for school because I had to, but I write shorter reports and longer research based papers for my career field. That is one reason that I pushed this class off until the last semester. I figured that I would have to write papers able stuff that I did not care about. I like that fact the class had some flexibility in what I was able to write about. It opened up new ways for me to write in various ways by relating them to topics that I felt comfortable with. I was still able to write on things that interested me and this makes writing more interesting. I have taken other English classes where I had to read a book and then write reports on a book that I was never interested in reading at all. The assignment that I had the most problems with was the crime of the century paper. I looked at several books in the library and searched the internet for information for this assignment. I found quite a bit of contradicting information, and it was difficult to write about something that dozens of people have already done (Greene and Lidinsky 137). I prefer to take a more scientific approach to writing. I like to keep things simple. I want to identify a problem and then do research to fix that problem. This is what I have done in the military and in my civilian career, so this is what I am proficient at. I like to work with solid statistical information. There are still areas that could use some more attention. Grammar has never been one of my strong points. I have always struggled with where to place commas and other punctuations. Comma splices are one area that needed quite a bit of attention (Hacker and Sommers 57). This class has helped me understand many of those grammatical error that I have made in the past, and has given me the information and methods that I need to help myself work thorough these issues. The hacker manual that was required for the class will be something that I keep on my bookshelf for many years to come, because it gives great examples and explains things in fine detail so that everyone can understand. The Purdue online writing lab is another great asset to help someone improve their writing style. I feel that it is very difficult to find certain errors in your own writing because you know what you want to say. This class gave many good examples such as writing your paper ahead of time and reading again a day or two later. I think that this is a great idea, but most of the time I don’t have time to do that. It is very difficult to balance work, family, military, and college. Most of the time it seems like college gets pushed off because it is the least important of them all. If I don’t do my homework, I get a bad grade, but if I don’t show up to work, I can get fired. This is why I would usually have my
I am more knowledgeable about invention, arrangement, style, and delivery, all in which create a masterful piece of text. A few examples, I have learned to organize and construct my thoughts and ideas clearer. I have been taught to use stronger transitions and focus more on the delivery and content of the body element of essays. Further, the instructions and advice I have received throughout this term have influenced my understanding of the purpose of writing. My outlook on writing has been modified by shifting my perception of writing from, writing to prove I am a good writer by perceiving it as using “fluffy” or BIG words to impress my audience. I grew to understanding that good writing’s purpose is to engage the writer by mind-striking ideas and arguments, which therefore will prove and title me as a “good writer”.
Several people have trouble writing college level essays and believe that they are unable to improve their writing skills. In “the Inspired Writer vs. The Real Writer,” Sarah Allen argues how no one is born naturally good at writing. Sarah Allen also states how even professional writers have trouble with the task of writing. Others, such as Lennie Irvin, agree. In Irvin’s article “What is ‘Academic’ Writing?” states how there are misconceptions about writing. Furthermore, Mike Bunn’s article “How to Read Like a Writer” shows ways on how one can improve their writing skills. Allen, Bunn, and Irvin are correct to say how no one is born naturally good writers. Now that we know this, we should find ways to help improve our writing skills, and
The art of writing is a complex and difficult process. Proper writing requires careful planning, revision, and proofreading. Throughout the past semester, the quality of my writing has evolved significantly. At first, I struggled with the separation of different types of paragraphs, and I found writing them laborious. Constant practice, however, has eliminated many of my original difficulties, and helped to inspire confidence in my skills.
This class was far more intense than what I expected but I was able to make it through the semester. I learned a lot from this class that I will carry into the future and use in other classes. All of the revision and feedback I have received during the time in the class helped me in the end. I feel like I am gradually becoming a better writer. I will take everything that I have learned in this class and use it for future reference when writing papers. I overall have enjoyed this class this semester.
This year in College Writing one has been very interesting. I understand now that there is a lot more that goes into writing a paper than I first thought. I especially realize this when I look back at one of my first papers which was the descriptive essay titled, "The Hidden Truth."
I realized how important language and grammar are, and that I needed to improve upon these skills before attempting to move forward on my career path. Currently, I am studying to become an elementary and special education teacher. Who am I to teach our youth grammar, when even I struggle with it? Based on this question was why I certainly pushed myself throughout the semester to continuously strengthen my work submitted. Additionally, having proper grammar is useful for any career field. No matter the job the probably for needing an outstanding resume is recommendable. With this skill of writing, it may surely take you down any path you choose. Writing and reading are two essential skills that we need to have in order to succeed in any field of study that we have chosen. Without these two we would not be here, wouldn’t be writing right now and would be considered the lowest class of our society. There are different aspects of writing that each of us may, or may not, excel at. Some of us are creative enough to write short stories or even novels on fiction while others, like me, are better at writing essays. To accomplish this we have all had a person to inspire us, to drive us, to get us over the hump of confidence that we need to succeed. Still to be successful we need to count on ourselves to succeed.
As a first year college student this course has taught me many core aspects to writing and critical thinking. Writing has not been one my strongest points in education, but I feel this course has helped me make strides in writing in many ways. This course has enlightened me on various aspects of writing and has taught me many different ways of writing quality essays. A few things that this course has taught me is how construct an acceptable thesis statement, how to prove my points in body paragraphs, and how to properly cite sources. Although I have learned an immense deal of writing skills within this course there some things I feel I can improve upon, such as, introductions and properly heading papers.
Throughout this semester I have learned many ways of writing through two main essays literacy narrative and comparison and contrast. These two essays have taught me how to correctly fix my comma splices, thesis statements, and capitalization. I have engaged in numerous learning material during this summer class. Many times when I thought it would be hard to work on those three developments I never gave up. I gain more positive feedback from my teacher because he pointed out most of my mistakes I made on both literacy narrative and comparison and contrast essays to help me understand what is it that I need to work on. My development as a writer became stronger.

When I started this class I thought I was somewhat alright writer. I understood the basics of writing and believed I knew how to write an entertaining piece. All of the papers we wrote showed me one of my weaknesses as a writer.
Writing has been my most challenging requirement through school. I am not a very experienced writer. I was not required to write much in high school until my last semester. My last semester in high school, about a year and half ago, I took GENR-091 which is the last time I have written a paper longer than one page. That was my most recent writing class; I am rusty to say the least.
One skill that I wish I had time to improve on is citing sources in MLA style. Through the course, I refused to seek help from my professor until week seven, one thing I regret doing. that could have allayed the fear and doubt I had about this course. Any questions I had could be cleared up as the course progressed. My essays through the subsequent weeks have demonstrated my strength and weaknesses. I do not have many strengths when it comes writing, but still I consider my greatest strength in writing to be being able to clearly understand the prompt and answer it correctly, especially with the analysis essays. I think this is just because I spend most of the scarce time on hand just to think about the prompt, for example, when I was preparing for my rhetorical analysis essay on globalization I thoroughly read both article on globalization by both Kwame Anthony Appiah and franklin Foer .An obvious struggle I have as a writer is organization and transitions. I tend to jump from one topic to another and sometimes cover. I should have used more transitional words in between sentences and paragraphs to make my reader understand the logic of my paper. I have not had enough writing experience and the writing process is difficult for me. I do sometimes admit that it takes days to complete one assignment, but it will be worth it when I become a proficient
Writing has changed because of the efficiency that technology provides. With the invention of instant messaging, writing has started to become something new entirely. People are writing more often and faster to get a message across. Luckily, students know that the writing that they do with friends is much different than what employers are looking for in the work place (Guffey, M.E., & Loewy, D., pg. 3-29).
