The Real Sharks “You have enemies? Good, that means you’ve stood up for something sometime in your life.”- Winston Churchill. Winston was the former prime minister of Britain, author, and an all around smart and funny guy. This relates to my story a lot because of these giant eighth graders that tried to push us around and we defended ourselves and didn't let anyone push us around referring to the quote. “Chase, outside!” screamed Luke, “ Big one coming right at you.” “ I'm going!” I said. The waves were enormous in a hot summer day in 2014. and it was almost like the water had that one swell where u feel like you’re flying in the brisk cool sky when the wave lifts you off your feet. Even the birds had a nice swim for fish. As …show more content…
I quickly repositioned myself so that I Could catch the giant wave. “Yea Boy!” shouted Luke. I caught the wave right as it towered over me almost feeling like it was eating me. Right as I caught the barrel it crashed and I finally got swallowed by the wave. “Hey!” came a voice. As I looked up these kids were looking right at me “These waves are fresh, but we want them to ourselves.” I saw that look in their eyes that they weren't messing around and they weren't going to stop until they got what they wanted “Fine” I said. “We’ll Surf you for it.” “ No, leave!” the tall kid said. “Oh it's going to happen!” said luke clenching up his fists as if he were trying to crack a nut I was up first vs this tall big kid with spiky hair. As the wave came I knew i was gonna win as he was on the side where it was already crashing. As it lifted me off the ground and onto my board. He trailed me by doing the same but I had the lead. We were both on the wave so now it was whoever had the better trick. He quickly took action and tried to catch my drift and pull out a 180. The nose of the board caught the tip of the wave and he fell straight into the the crashing wave and disappearing into the water. Now it was all up to me, I just had to do a trick and land it but time was running out. The wave kept getting smaller and almost as if it wasn't good enough to trick. But I lifted my board up into the air planting my feet perfectly
As Stephen Covey once declared, “Just as we develop our physical muscles through overcoming opposition- such as lifting weight- we develop our character muscles by overcoming challenges and adversity.” This may seem like no sweat, but in reality it is laborious to do. Nevertheless, there are many people who embody this quote in our everyday lives and even in literature. The short story The Truth About Sharks by Joan Bauer, depicts such a person. In this anecdote, the experience that the protagonist, Beth faced, taught her to stand up for herself and therefore feel empowered. She went from a sullen teenager who was unable to stand up to her uncle and one who felt insecure in the shadow of her cousin, to someone with the confidence to rise above. The Truth About Sharks portrays a vital change that happened to Beth as a result of her being falsely accused of shoplifting and the challenges she faced to clear her name. This article renders a dynamic change that occurred in the main character, Beth who demonstrated the theme stand up for what you think is right.
“As a boy, I saw countless tough guys locked away; I have since buried several too. They were babies, really 一 a teenage cousin, a brother of twenty-two, a childhood friend in his mid-twenties一 all gone down in episodes of bravado played out in the streets. I came to doubt the virtues of intimidation early on. I chose, perhaps unconsciously, to remain a shadow 一 timid, but a
One of the previous papers in English class required the class to pick a paper to explore, this question will be concentrated on further in the synthesis essay. What evidence do scientist have to prove that prehistoric sharks existed? The reason behind picking this question wasn’t just to find proof that these monsters swam the seas, but to learn more about them from different resources. One of the resources that were used was a chapter in Angelo Mojetta’s book Sharks, called “ The Birth Of A Legend”. The other resource that was used for information was an article in Discovery Channels website called “ Prehistoric Sharks”. Sharks and Discovery Channel are the two resources that led to many other questions about their different, and similar views on prehistoric sharks existence.
Family therapy is often needed when families go through transitions such as separations between parents and divorce. According to research, “the power of family therapy derives from bringing parents and children together to transform their interactions” (Nichols, & Davis, p.18), as problems need to be addressed at their source. The children who are the most vulnerable, when parents decide to separate, exhibit symptoms which are exaggerations of their parent’s problems (Nichols, & Davis, p.18). Frank and Walt Berkman are the examples of how children cope and adapt to the stressors of family separations such as marital separations and
This quote also validates a significant personality change upon the protagonist, who seemed like a character that would've helped in any other circumstance. Even though the main character could've easily went and brought a rope, he didn't because his group of friends did not reciprocate any intentions of helping the man. The author wrote this to explain how one characters' personality could change for the worse based on the group's impact on the individual. Although the author could've easily made the story with one or two characters, he instead made it into a group setting, which showed how much greater the peer pressure is when the number of people increases. It is also important to realize that these type of cliques that do not have any supervision or authority, like these kids, will change their morals and ethics much more quickly due to the intellectual force of the number of people, rather than the influence of past

“Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one’s definition of your life, but define yourself.”– Harvey Fierstein
‘If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles.’
It was a warm rainy June night the humidity was high which made it even harder to breathe on the crammed boat. My family was asleep on the constantly rocking boat suddenly the boat shook, but my family was still fast asleep. I couldn’t seem to fall asleep so I got up and stepped out on the cold wet steel boats upper deck to get some air. When I got outside I realized that it was pouring bucket sized rain. I saw increasingly large waves crash furiously against the lower deck. Hard water droplets pelted my face, I could taste the salt water in my mouth from the spray of the ocean. Suddenly A massive wave slammed hard against the ship and almost swallowed the boat. Wind gusts started kicking up. I held onto the rail grasping it as if it were my prized possession. Suddenly I was blown
"The Shark Attacks of 1916" is about a boy named Chet who gets attacked by a shark after many events that made him think that sharks wouldn't attack a human. The main characters of the book are Chet, who is visiting his Uncle Jerry in New Jersey, and Chet's new friends Sid, Monty, and Dewey. The attacks took place in Elm Hills, New Jersey in the Matawan Creek in July of 1916. The problem of the story is no one believing a shark can attack a human in a creek miles away from the ocean. In the beginning of the story Chet, Sid, Monty, and Dewey find a newspaper article saying a shark attacked a human, Uncle Jerry said it was a lie and that something like that would never happen. The next week at Matawan creek, Monty wore a fake shark fin and preteneded
Hundreds of people, who get in the ocean every year, are almost none that encounter sharks. Even if you're lucky enough to see a shark big enough to bite you, you're much likely to die from a heart attack than getting bit by one. Shark attacks are mistakes and the idea of a shark off every beach waiting for people to come in the water is completely untrue. I will inform you on the background knowledge of sharks and the reasons why humans should not be afraid only aware.
The concept of standing up for myself had been something I’d put off many years after becoming a bully victim, but it wasn’t until the death of my friend Samuel that the reality of the issue arose.
We all know that action is the key to success, and we always try to be the very best. But in a world that will try to knock you down you must have the strength to survive the final round. Growing up today you have to be wise because its hard to tell the truth when its covered by the lies. The world can be cruel and the world can be kind, but you had better step up or you'll be left behind.
Savagely cutting off a human’s arm is totally immoral, and yet fishermen continue to cut off sharks’ fins and leave them for dead. Shark finning is practiced by numerous countries, but only banned by a few. While it is well known that this barbarian and horrifying practice is severely endangering most shark populations there are only a few laws in a few places that regulate the shark fin trade. The reason shark finning continues to go on is due to the high market demand, weak legal constraints, and the ignorance to the fact that there are severe problems associated with it, both to human health and to the marine ecosystem.
This lukewarm water was deceiving though, because it only seemed lukewarm due to the drop in temperature and misty rainfall. The waves were rushing toward me like a bull to a matador’s red flag. My mouth tasted as if someone dumped a whole shaker of salt on my tongue. The wave pushed my further and faster as it I could feel the wave breaking on my body and there I was back at the shallows again floating in with the white wash and was ready for another wave. As I stood back up and ran back out to the deep water I saw one of my surfing mates catch the most perfect barrel it was rad. It would have been a great snap shot. I caught another wave, this one was even bigger. The thrust of the wave was twisting my body and I was pulled towards the sea
