Sports Education is a curriculum and instruction model designed for delivery in physical education programs at the upper elementary, middle school, and high school levels. In Sports Education there are so many ways to get all of your students involved instead of just one way in a typical physical education class. There are 5 main characteristics of Sports Education that you will want to be aware of. Sports Education involves seasons, not units. Typically in a PE class you have units, and in each unit you are doing a certain activity or skill that you are learning and practicing. But, in Sports Education you use seasons just like if you were on a sports team, it makes it more realistic. At the end of each season there is a major event. Some of the pros being that the students learn leadership skills. A lot of Sports Education is the student running it. With having captains and coaches, the students are in charge, they run the practices; make the starting lineups, etc. It teaches them how to lead in certain situations and be responsible when given tasks so their team can be successful. Also, all the students participate. A big problem in PE now is kids not participating, most of the time it is because they aren’t athletic and don’t want to embarrass themselves. But with Sports Education, even someone who isn’t athletic can still be involved without actually playing the sport. Someone who may be better at taking charge and organizing can be graded on that instead of their skills in the sport they are playing that season. It also gives students knowledge on the sport that they might not have had in the past. But finally, it is a positive environment.
