Introduction What is it about? Controversies over video games are focused on video game content and the potential for it to negatively impact player attitude and behavior. Since the early 1980s, video games have become part of the political debates with lawyers claiming that video games are harmful for society, protected under the freedom of speech. Hundreds of video game studies have been executed by a wide range of psychologists and government agencies with the aim of addressing the issue of harm. These studies have targeted possible links to addiction, aggression, violence, social development, stereotyping and sexual morality issues. These studies have been followed up by different analyzations. Why this choice? We chose this subject because it seemed interesting on first sight and we wanted to know more about the current debates circling around videogames now. Besides, we also chose this because we can apply our knowledge and empiricism in our advantage. Additionally, this subject is a well-known topic of today, and with the developing technology, it becomes a more and more popular controversy, it is also difficult to create a conclusion whether gaming is good or bad for you since the opinions differ a lot. Argumentation The facts: why it is a social and political problem One of the most common criticisms of video games is that it leads to increased aggression in youth. Studies have been conducted on this topic and several have found a correlation between these two aspects. However, several other studies by groups such as The Harvard Medical School Center for Mental Health, The Journal of Adolescent Health, and The British Medical Journal have found no link between video game usage and viole... ... middle of paper ... ...terest told before. Their main goal is to please the citizens and make them happy whatsoever. So why ban games which people enjoy playing? It is just having different taste of games. Barrack Obama discussed this as well in the United States, he invested millions of dollars on research. He is not sure of what gaming exactly does with the human brain and wants to know more about this ‘problem’. The United Kingdom and Italy have been banning a lot of games already the past few years due aggressive and sexual content in a certain game. They feel more responsible to their citizens when it is about gaming. The European Union does not have the right to ban aggressive games on their own. They are allowed to advice other countries to have stricter rules on games. The government of the country can decide for themselves what to do with the information of the European Union.
Do we have a moral and ethical obligation to regulate video games and movies? On Martin Luther King Day 2002, the new video game "Ethnic Cleansing" was released by Resistance Records a company owned by the "National Alliance", the largest and most active neo-Nazi organization in the United States. The objective of the game is to kill "sub-humans"-i.e. Blacks and Latinos and their "masters", the Jews. "Patterned after popular mainstream games such as 'Quake' and 'Doom', the game turns racially motivated violence into entertainm...
The allegation that videogames cause violent behavior in children has been present as long as videogames themselves. Some researchers said that the Sandy Hook shooter, Adam Lanza, was one intense gamer. “Seung-Hui Cho, the Virginia Tech Shooter was seen by his roomates as odd because he never joined them in video games.”(Beresin) This debate will continue to go on in this country as long as there are horrific crimes that occur. There is much written in the research regarding this issue, and many differing views. The research that is presented in the next few paragraphs supports the theory that it is not the graphic video games that produce aggressive behavior, but other factors in a child’s life that create violent actions.
At this day in age we bask in the luxury of having easy access to advanced technology at our disposal. From the World Wide Web, to cell phones, music, movies and video games the human race has thought of any and everything to keep us entertained. Over the years studies have shown reasonable concerns regarding the long-term effects of video games. These games can desensitize gamers to real life violence, which is usually seen in the younger crowd. The studies especially hit on the games containing player-on-player violence. Though these games are extremely entertaining and can get kids to settle down for a while, if not properly supervised, they can produce adverse effects. Other studies have shown that video games can be used as way to yield positive outcomes such as, good problem solving skills, cooperation in a group and the ability to flow. Although there has been psychological research on children learning through the actions of others some believe that children are automatically able to distinguish between what is just a game and what is reality. The longer they are allowed on their game system the more they become convinced that their games are real. Some researchers believe violent video games can channel the aggression of the child but the parents are to blame for what happens to the child after playing an excessive amount over a period of time. Children can become preoccupied with these violent video games which have been proven to be the cause of poor social skills, uncontrollable aggression and a false reality.

The first reason video games are an issue is that many video games made today possess content that many people would consider to be obscene. The term obscene covers violence, profanity, and sexual images (obviously). Such videogames are usually branded with the M (mature audiences only) rating on the front of the videogame cover. This means that only players seventeen or older should be playing such games. However, many children around the ages of twelve and under are acquiring these video games as gifts or are purchasing the games themselves. Therefore, it can be assumed that the parents are purchasing M-rated games for their children, and that stores are willingly selling these young children M-rated games. As Paul Keegan says, parents are not following these ratings and stores are not enforcing them, thus allowing young children to view content that is considered obscene (6). Thus, if parents understand and follow the various video game rating labels, and if stores enforce the videogame rating system, then young children will not be as easily able to view mature material.
“On Tuesday, November 2, while the rest of the country was voting, the Supreme Court of the United States heard oral arguments in Schwarzenegger v. EMA, the landmark case in which the state of California is petitioning for the re-instatement of a California law banning the sale of deviant or morbid violent video games to minors” (Macris). This case is a current example of the opponents of video games trying to prove video games are a bad influence on children and teenagers. Violent video game opponents have always tried to disprove the positive effects of video games. They also have been known to make up and mislead with tales of terrible side effects. This essay will prove to the reader that many of these various statements against video games and their creators are false. Contrary to opposition arguments, video games actually present benefits to gamers by reducing stress, providing entertainment, and helping to develop motivation that could not otherwise be achieved through conventional means.
Although violent video games are thought to encourage real world violence, they actually help to prevent it. I am focusing on violent video games and how they affect juveniles because I feel that this issue needs to be looked at in the criminal justice community. It is an unnecessary distraction to blame the actions of a disturbed youth on a form of entertainment that has been used by millions of people without incident. A review article published in The Psychiatric Quarterly found that many studies which claim to indicate an increase in aggression due to video games are, in fact, biased! Once the bias is taken into account, the studies no longer find any correlation between youths who play violent video games and youths who demonstrate aggression and violent behavior.
...omplicated or just seemed irrelevant to the situation while they might have been relevant. With all these PC bangs that basically cover every corner of the streets and a TV show dedicated towards production of gaming, wouldn’t the Internet addiction recreational centers be useless? Being the most wired country in the world, some may even believe that gaming isn’t just a fad but it has become a part of the culture of South Korea. It has gotten so big that there might not be a chance for them to get rid of gaming addiction, so should the government issue strict bans on the gaming TV shows and PC bang gaming? It is not just that gaming is part of these teenagers’ lives but also it is a big part of the South Korean economy. So if the government does plan to take strict steps like issuing bans on gaming houses and TV shows how can they deal with the economical problems?
Video games have been a growing industry for about 30 years and has never been bigger. As a whole, the industry made around $66 billion last year, and is expected to make even more this coming year. Because of this growth, gamers have sought better graphics, better stories, and even more violence. Developers have satisfied this want with more M rated games that include heavier violence, stronger language, sexual themes, and intense blood and gore. Past acts and laws have been put in place to try and eliminate violence in video games. These laws have stiffled the industry's freedom of expression and caus...

By far the largest concern of technology today is video games. There have been so many experiments and studies to try and figure out if video games have a negative or positive effect on our children. A growing body of research is linking violent video game play to aggressive cognitive, attitudes and behaviors (D.A. Gentile, 2004). Video games can obviously be dangerous for our children causing aggression, bad performances in school and obesity. Although we cant blame all of these problems on the use of video game...
Willoughby, T., Adachi, P. C., & Good, M. (2012). A longitudinal study of the association between violent video game play and aggression among adolescents. Developmental Psychology, 48(4), 1044-1057. doi:10.1037/a0026046
Overall, video games can greatly affect a person. The effects of video games include social ineptitude, aggression, and personality issues. Video games ruin relationships between family and friends. People waste hours excessively playing video games because of addiction and its appeal. Video game categories such as MMORPGs promote social ineptitude and even violence. Video games are the primary reason for a persons aggressive behavior and change in personality. Increased graphics and levels make it hard for players to distinguish the difference between reality and fantasy in violent video games. It is obvious that the negative effects of video games greatly outweigh the positives.
American educational philosopher John Dewey once said, “ Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.” Education is the foundation of a permanent lifestyle. Parents should desire for their children to have educational stability to build upon. Any concerned parent should want nothing but the best for their child as they are well aware of the new forms of child entertainment. Since the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, children in the United States have become subject to a new type of entertainment: video gaming (Nickson, 2010). Video games have become a big part of the average American household. Parents have begun to wonder how video games are affecting their children’s lifestyles.
Several years ago, technology and child’s play were not such as extremely developed as today. Thousands of teenagers have video game as their primary form of entertainment at home. The disagreement about violent video games is because they focus on several subjects such as violence scenes, pornographic content, racism and other resources. For many years, researchers have been debating if video games can cause dependence or not. However, an expert, Jack Flanagan believes video games have a really negative effect on a person’s life and even for children. Jack states that video game addiction exists, and can have the same effects as drugs and alcohol (Netzley 36-37). This shows that video game addiction can be like other addictions
