A College Cannot be Perfect; However, We Can Make It Better
I. A potential incoming college freshman struts with confidence through the sliding doors of the Student Center, inhaling the freshly prepared pizza ready to be served at Sbarros, and sees the smiling faces as Pride Leaders try to convince each individual to enroll at Hofstra University; yet fail to admit that every university has its limitations and failed expectations. A journalist from U.S. News reports, “Hofstra University 's ranking in the 2016 edition of Best Colleges is National Universities, 135.” (Hofstra University)
Each university has different versions of a campus environment and academic areas that make it unique, thus having its own individual aspects when it comes to the decision of certain students. The Hofstra campus is known to attract new-comers due to its arboretum and programs; such as business, communications, medical, law, etc. Frederick Soviero writes, “…encompasses 240 acres and provides a beautiful campus setting that inspires and motivates its students…Today, more than 12,000 evergreen and deciduous trees represent 625 species and varieties, and the number is increasing every year. The Friends of the Hofstra University Arboretum have developed a two-acre plot of land for a distinctive bird sanctuary…”

While applying to colleges and narrowing down the final decisions there are pros and cons to consider; whether it’d be distance, safety, environment, etc., every student has his or her own expectations and standards. The Hofstra campus is particularly favored, without including the surrounding areas; that being said the campus has to be kept up to par for a likable and comfortable atmosphere, including in the classrooms and residential dorms. Thus, maintenance and other relevant faculty should be doing everything in their power to make sure that the campus and living environments are what the students expect and deserve in the college they plan to reside in for four
Every year, there are thousands of students planning and tracking their goals. Seniors in high school are faced with the tough challenge, while the Juniors are left to worry about another year. Finally, the point comes in a student’s life where they must make one of the most important decisions in their educational lifetime. That choice is, which college to attend, and it is a very scrutinous process. Two of such colleges are the University of Iowa and St. Ambrose University, and although similarities like majors and minors are evident, there are many other differences including student life.
In Frank Bruni’s New York Time’s article, “The Imperiled Promise of College,” he argues that college is no longer a guarantee of success because students are not being properly motivated and guided into the programs that will provide them with jobs.
The right and privilege to higher education in today’s society teeters like the scales of justice. In reading Andrew Delbanco’s, “College: What It Was, Is, and Should Be, it is apparent that Delbanco believes that the main role of college is to accommodate that needs of all students in providing opportunities to discover individual passions and dreams while furthering and enhancing the economic strength of the nation. Additionally, Delbanco also views college as more than just a time to prepare for a job in the future but a way in which students and young adults can prepare for their future lives so they are meaningful and purposeful. Even more important is the role that college will play in helping and guiding students to learn how to accept alternate point of views and the importance that differing views play in a democratic society. With that said, the issue is not the importance that higher education plays in society, but exactly who should pay the costly price tag of higher education is a raging debate in all social classes, cultures, socioeconomic groups and races.
Why should a student attend an HBCU, some may ask. Those considering attending college should attend an HBCU no matter what their race or ethnicity may be. Many people think HBCUs are only African American colleges due to what the acronym stands for, Historically Black Colleges and Universities. According to CollegeXpress, “HBCUs do primarily serve African American students, but that doesn’t mean you’re going to have a limited cultural experience. On the contrary, people from all over the world come to the United States to attend HBCUs, which results in diverse student bodies.”(1) Anyone can attend and sometimes when an individual is not black and decides to attend an HBCU, scholarships are given because they want to show that they are willing to accept anyone, regardless of their race. Some HBCUs that are listed as being the best are: Hampton University, Howard University, Morehouse College, and Spelman College, but they are just a few of many out there to attend. There are also several famous people who attended HBCUs: Jesse Jackson, Wanda Sykes, Samuel Jackson, Toni Morrison, and Oprah Winfrey. Many students that have attended an HBCU love the friendly environment, the diversity, and the knowledge gained. If a student is not financially stable, the HBCU is willing to work out payment arrangements and help out in an effort for the student to receive the education that they deserve. It appears that a large portion of those that attend Virginia Union University came because of the cultural experience or because someone in their family attended and they want to continue the legacy. The exchange of views whether a student should attend an HBCU or a PWI has been a topic of discussion for some time now. Whether you attend an HBCU or a PWI you go for one purpose and that purpose is to get your education. So who says because someone goes to a predominantly black school they will not get the same education a person gets that goes to a predominantly white school ? Or vice versa. Many people have some sort of idea that by attending a Predominantly White Institution(PWI) one will receive a higher level of education but that is not truly always the case. Most individuals are under the impression that simply because of your skin color you have to attend that type of school. That is the problem with this case just people see it as one should attend the college with individuals who are like you but not keeping one 's education in mind.
There’s been a lot of discussion about closed campus at HVHS. I think having a closed campus at HVHS would be a wonderful idea! First the food that they serve at HVHS is super delicious and very nutritious. Second, students on a closed campus can socialize and get more involved with the students around campus making new friends. Third and last staying on campus can keep students safe and away from accidents and drugs.
Most African-Americans agree that they have much to gain by earning a college degree. Most will also agree that this task is much easier said than done. Unfortunately, many African-Americans find that disparities in higher education eclipse their expectations of equal educational opportunity. For many, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are a great solution. Since the founding of Cheyney University in 1837, HBCUs have continually been established to give African-Americans an education as they could not attend other institutions due to segregation laws. HBCUs became more widespread in the 1960s with twenty-seven institutions being established, twenty-four of which still exist today among the 105 institutions. HBCUs play an important role in the education of African-Americans compared to other colleges and universities. They historically provided a way for African-Americans to receive an education that Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs) did not allow, they offer an inclusive environment that fosters better academic and social adjustment, and their open admissions policy along with efforts to enhance retention rates gives African-American students from disadvantaged backgrounds the opportunity for success.
The 4+4 program at Hofstra caught my interest after I researched its medical school, the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. Northwell comprises some of the most renowned hospitals in the New York area, from the Long Island Jewish Medical Center to Lenox Hill Hospital. Aside from being partnered with such a prestigious institution, the Zucker School of Medicine’s progressive, “case based” curriculum is what intrigued me the most. Few medical schools offer to train its students for the 21st century, and this hands on approach seems like the best method to expose students from our generation to the ever changing field of healthcare. From working in groups to solve weekly cases to using real world patient cases to explain concepts, I feel as if the Zucker School of Medicine offers an optimal experience for its students to succeed in their fields.
Clemson University is an amazing school to go to because of its really spectacular weather. You can just sit back and relax just enjoy your day after a long hard day of work from class. Even some students agree here is what one said” The weather gets really hot in the summer gets pretty cold in the winter months. There’s a good spread of the seasons you get a good amount of time for fall winter spring and summer.” ” We realize that top-ranked academics are just the beginning of our students’ race toward the future. High-caliber learning happens and thrives at this university.” (Clemson) So as you can see Clemson thrives to get you in the right place you should be at. Clemson is much known for many things their history, its research centers, and their famous alumnus. So let’s start off with Clemson’s history.
In Paul Toughmay’s “Who Gets to Graduate,” he follows a young first year college student, Vanessa Brewer, explaining her doubts, fears, and emotions while starting her college journey. As a student, at the University of Texas Brewer feels small and as if she doesn’t belong. Seeking advice from her family she calls her mom but after their conversation Brewer feels even more discouraged. Similar to Brewer I have had extreme emotions, doubts, and fears my freshman year in college.
The focus of this paper is to dispel a common view that community colleges do not provide on-campus housing and to provide greater insights into the types of community colleges that provide on-campus housing, the typical student who resides in on-campus housing, a guide to various California community colleges that provide on-campus housing, and the impact that on-campus housing has on student learning outcomes, financial gains for community colleges that provide on-campus housing, and an overview of the lack of data in the area of not only on-campus housing in community colleges, but community colleges at large. According to Cohen and Brawer (2008) access to student housing is one of the fundamental dissimilarities between public community colleges and four-year institutions of higher learning (p. 220). Cohen and Brawer (2008) take the position that community colleges lack the all-encompassing ability to appreciate the connectedness of community in the same fashion as that of four-year colleges or universities. Broader analysis of current data relating to on-campus housing in rural community colleges is three-fold. First, it exposes the lack of concrete observation or empirical data on the issues that surround community colleges with respect to on-campus housing. A wealth of data supports the learning outcomes, financial impact, gains, and drawbacks of on-campus housing, but from the vantage point of on-campus housing at the four year college or university level. College for an incoming freshman is exciting, however, it is often focused on the social aspect such as the connections that can be attained through Greek life, parties and independence. Due to the social interactions, freshmen tend to drop out of college after their first year. Focusing on what college is meant for can prevent these situations. The pressures of college such as impressing parents, and maintain a high standard GPA-wise can lead to stress and freeze a student from achieving the proper academic performance. During the mid 1900s, college was considered more of a luxury than anything; people would attend college exclusively to acquire knowledge in hopes of obtaining a career after graduation. People in the twenty-first century, however, attend college to get away from home and enjoy freedom at parties. Education is taken lightly, and those who feel that education isn’t the main focus of college should not apply for sakes of the greater good.
Students living on campus don’t have to worry about time because they live in the college. On the other hand, students who commute to school, have to worry about getting to class on time. Students living on campus don’t have to waste money on transportation or food since it is all covered under a plan. Unlike commuters, who aren’t covered under a plan, they have to pay more money to get to school as well as for food. Students who live on campus tend to know more people and they know more about what’s going on around campus. However, students, who commute, don’t have that advantage because they are home most of the time. Living on campus can be more beneficial than living at home in many ways.
“Is every new thing better than old?” On 5 November 2013, UM held the inauguration ceremony for the new campus in the University Hall on new campus, and all the students will go to the new campus soon. It seems very good to the students, but some students actually have the same question, “should we move to the new campus?” Of course, everything has its good side and bad side. For moving to the new campus, most students think that its disadvantage is more than the advantage. There are three things that show why students should not move to the new campus, and they are students are having part-time job, the transport is not good, and the new campus does not have enough dormitories.
