When a woman sleeps with twenty guys she is a slut, when a guy sleeps with twenty girls, he is a hero. You cannot deny this sad but true fact. Men who sleep with many women are basically worshiped by their friends while women who are doing the same are regarded as sluts, whores, skanks, etc. You would think the ridicule would stop there but alas, women are also scrutinized by men for being virgins. They get called prude just because they do not let guys “get in their pants”. According to Marks and Fraley (2006) in The Sexual Double Standard and Adolescent Peer Acceptance, “the double standard is a cultural fiction reified by individuals who selectively attend to confirming evidence presented to them in the media or in conversations, but not personally endorsed by them.” (2009:146) Since the double standard has become more of a public concept woman have gone out of their way to prove that they are better than men, and can sleep with the same number of partners as they choose and not be a bad person; basically woman have used the double standard as a way to sleep with a multitude of people and feel little regret. The double standard is the application of a set of principles that are different for men than they are for woman. This standard has been around for a long time but recently woman have gone out of their way to try and prove that they can sleep with whoever they want and it be accepted. Men who have slept with a considerable number of partners is seen as accomplished, a stud, and a ladies man, but a woman who has slept with a decent amount of partners is still seen as a whore, a slut, or easy (Marks and Fraley 2005). A common analogy used to demonstrate this double standard is a key that opens many locks is a master key, wher... ... middle of paper ... ...udy proves that point. Women are generally more protective of their female friends than they are of their male friends. Women tend to take a more motherly role when it comes to giving their friends the check of approval for dating a guy. Women are branching out from the norm. Women are discussing sex more often with male and female friends, they are experimenting with their likes and dislikes in the bedroom, and going against the status quo. Women do not take being told they are different or less than a man well or lightly anymore. Since the double standard has become more of a public concept woman have gone out of their way to prove that they are better than men, and can sleep with the same number of partners as they choose and not be a bad person; basically woman have used the double standard as a way to sleep with a multitude of people and feel little regret.
1. What is the tone of this article? The tone of this article is kinda snotty but truthful in all ways.
The final concept of “Double standards” is also shown in the play. In my opinion double standards are used mostly to protect people (usually parents and children) however in the play double standards are used with males and females. One instance that this is shown through is different genders and their sexual activity, which is shown in act six. In act six Ricko, Scott and Davo sleep with multiple women however when Shana sleeps with multiple partners she gets called
After a girl has been called a prude for so long, they may develop a sense of being different and want to dress and act more provocatively. They start to think that they need to act a certain way and become like everyone else. A “good” slut is a girl who might dress in short shorts and a spaghetti t-shirt and everyone judges her based on that, and not because the weather is hot outside. It is unfortunate, but it does happen that people are quick to judge others based on the clothing preference such as short shorts. However, when I read about a “bad” slut, I feel like these are the girls who actively make a to effort to go out and participate in promiscuous behavior on purpose. “Sometimes they are too wild or behave out of the confines of appropriate behavior” (Tanenbaum, 2015 p.184). Personally, this reminds me a lot of my middle school days. Although I went to a private school where wearing uniform was required, many of the girls made it an effort to define it. I remember how I had a friend who had a bigger butt than the rest of the girls in the class and so she would use that excuse to roll up her skirt and make it shorter than the 2 inch about the knee rule. She would go out of her way to try and get around the uniform rules and the guys in the class would love it, whereas the girls would always call her a slut. Nonetheless, like mentioned before, she loved the “slut” and saw it as a
Female friendships are thought of as complicated, confusing and stereotyped as maleficent. Roxanne Gay stated in her book Bad feminist that, “all female friendships must be bitchy, toxic, or competitive.” (47) Her point made in the chapter titled; ‘How to Be Friends with Another Woman’ clarifies and lays out the rules and procedures women must undergo and follow to satisfy society’s basic layout of women’s relationships. Her points stated specify the attitudes, behavior, and expectations of one another to balance and create a stable relationship.
Conor Kelly argues in her article, “Sexism in Practice: Feminist Ethics Evaluating the Hookup Culture” that the hookup culture discriminates women and disempowers them too. I will like to agree with Kelly, many women do not become stronger from the hooking up culture. They tend to become weaker from the men that encourage them to feel a certain way but the second they stop paying attention to them, they feel less of themselves. Yet, for many women hooking up gives them more control of their own life making them feel that they have more power. And as time starts to change, people start to grow and mature try to accept one another equally. But we have to conclude that the double standard is not going to change.
...is morally degrading and perpetuates the idea that women are mere sexual objects,” (BBC News.) This shows the awful things they go through in order to get what they truly
Society has set certain standards that women are supposed to follow. The most common image of women is that they are very passive and try to avoid conflict in any situation. More and more in society women are breaking down the social barriers that confine them to their specific roles. The movies The Graduate and The Last Picture Show reveal to viewers a side to females that is very nontraditional. These two movies help to show how women are rebelling against sexual social norms, and they are taking a more active and aggressive role when dealing with heterosexual relationships.
Females are dehumanized and looked upon as sexual objects because their value is measured in sexual terms; thus creating the concept of a slut.
...odity, desperately sought after by men. Their commodity places them in a double bind: "To be sexually active is to be suspect, to be a virgin is to be desirable and therefore potentially sexually active and potentially suspect. Either way women lose. Either way they are sexualised" (Macfarlane 78).
Ariana Grande was interviewed over the summer after her break up with rapper, Big Sean. During the interview Grande talks about her past relationship with Big Sean and also talked about the double standard for women’s sexuality that is in place. She talked about the ideal double standard on how a man is glorified if he sleeps around and is encouraged to do so. However she found it frustrating that women who engage in sexual activity is seen as “loose” or even how women feel ashamed and/or embarrassed if and when they talk about sex. Her main argument in the interview was centered at that women should be able to make mindful choices when they decide to be intimate and sexual with their partner (Greer, 2015). Women should not focus
Looking at our past, there have been dramatic changes in the way humans view sex. Long before the 1900s individuals framed their views based on the religious institution. Due to the fact that they strongly centered their idea of sexual thought on religion, they believed that the only purpose of having sex was to procreate. As the 1920’s approached, there were various factors that changed the way individuals viewed sex. The “new women” known, as flappers were women who were confident in who they were. They changed their attire as well as their social attitude. In the 1920s, the flappers redefined sex; customs and traditions were broken and new norms were created by society.
One of the main and most discussed double standards when it comes to gender is the fact that men are praised for being promiscuous, while women are put down and called names. This double standard goes way back in the societal memory. Evolutionary psychologists suggest that these gender differences have resulted from males’ and females’ different reproductive capacities. A woman can go have sex with a man, but she then will be limited to carrying his baby for those nine months. In the meantime, the man can go out and have sex with many women, and have all of those women pregnant at the same time, thus resulting in multiple offspring. “Because men have greater reproductive capacities, it is considered beneficial for them to inseminate as many females as possible to maximize the survival of their offspring (Milhausen and Herold).” Still, the theory does not fully explain why women, even though they do not have the ability to spread their genes as quickly as men can, are expected to be sexually conservative. Perhaps the simplest explanation from an evolutionary standpoint is those women are sexually conservative because they are the ones that have to have the babies. Pregnancy is hard work, not to mention that if a woman sleeps around, she is bound to be unsure of whose baby she is carrying.
The controversy of sex has lead to it being thought of as dangerous. In society there is the controversy of people having sex or having any sexual activity they are considered perverted and lecherous. Then there is the other side of the spectrum where someone who does not have sex at all is considered a prude. Both being lecherous or a prude is unacceptable in society. People feel that they must lie whether they have sex or not because of the word of what opinions will formulate against them. The reason people lie about their sexual experiences is so that that are not harshly judged, criticized, or labelled by society. People can be labelled as a slut, whore, prostitute, or a prude, but it does not mean that it is entirely true because some people do not fully understand some of the meanings behind these words and just use it as hurtful slang. Therefore, sex is more secretive than it should be. Either lie or truth a person will say, other people will make a strong, rude
Objectivity towards women has always been rooted to sexuality. Men and women are distinctly different in many aspects not just sexually, however knowing this has placed objectivity on both sexes more specifically women. The knowledge of differences can be transferred into further opinions and judgments which can lead to discrimination, sexual bias, and inequality against women.
Waking up in the morning, looking in the mirror, I realize how much I care about what other people think of me even if I try not to. Judgement itself isn’t a bad thing because it helps us choose between right or wrong; good or evil; fair or unjust, but there is a branch of judgment that we could do without, discrimination. Discrimination is a poison killing whatever it touches; giving us false power over those around us. We all deal with discrimination, whether we are on the receiving end, or the cause. Nothing good ever comes from it, so why do we continue to be participants?
