Sacrifices are made by many people, for many reasons. Some people sacrifice animals (or other people- yikes!) while others sacrifice time, energy, love, devotion, and even their lives for the benefits of the world around them. Teachers sacrifice a lot of things to bring knowledge, joy, and understanding to the young people of America. At Hillside Junior High School, teachers are not treated as well as they should be for the sacrifices they make every day. Teachers at Hillside are people who devote their working lives and free time to educating the youth of Boise, Idaho in order to make the world a better place. And, for people who devote that much time and energy to doing this, they don’t get even half of the appreciation and kindness they deserve. Teachers at Hillside are often paid little respect, money, and are often thought of negatively by the students and, occasionally, administration of our school. The lack of respect, monetary gain, and the negative viewpoints many students have of the teachers at Hillside Junior High School is unnecessary, to say the least. This is also mentioned a lot by students who are known to be rude, disruptive, or violent during class time and towards teachers. Teachers deserve the power they have, because they need that power to keep order in the classroom. While it is true that some teachers are too controlling or harsh, most are not and are able to control themselves and keep the peace in the classroom. The first reason I agree with Matthew Miller’s “A Deal for Teachers”, is that something needs to be done about good teachers not being treated or paid right. I know many (in my opinion) great and intelligent teachers. They are working hard all the time to teach children everything they need to know. Meanwhile, they are getting paid the same as their coworkers who are doing nothing. In poor schools this might be even more important. In some cases, school might be the only place some children are getting taught important life skills, and their teachers might be the only good examples they have. I know a teacher who works in a poorer school. She’s told me about how hard it is to work at a poor school in general, with a lot of children who don’t respect teachers or adults and parents that also don’t respect the teachers. Couple that with low income and awful coworkers. Students spend a huge chunk of their lives in classrooms; the type of classroom helps or hinders them in life. Each student and teacher have reciprocal power; "reciprocal power enables teachers and students to undermine any attempt at domination by a single person in the classroom" (Pauly, 57). Students often use reciprocal power when they want to disrupt the class, screaming that they do not want to be in the class or do not want to learn. It is the teachers ' job to take that power back and show the class who is in charge of the classroom before all mayhem breaks

Foucault and Heidegger, modern philosophers, both describe power in these terms, as the facility to manipulate an object without force. Understanding this point of view is important, not only for state institutions who attempt to exert power over citizens and deviants, but also for teachers as they try to use disciplinary power to control the events in their classroom. Unfortunately, the majority of status quo disciplinary systems are entrenched in the mindset that power can be exerted over individuals through the use of coercive punishments and threats, actions which usually have the complete opposite result, less control over the students. A system that more closely mirrors Thomas Gordon’s view of discipline as self-control would be a far superior disciplinary model because it recognizes the true nature of power.

Correcting this issue will be difficult, but possible. Throughout high school I did not have the best values that I have today. I did what other kids thought was cool like any other high school student trying to fit into a new place. In the future, I plan on pursuing a career in education. I plan on demonstrating the values of equality very thoroughly. Making a safe and pleasant environment is what I am hoping to accomplish. A teacher can impact a student’s life heavily. For example, my sophomore year theology teacher Mr. Finnochio, was a man of integrity. I never met a nicer, more thoughtful person in my life. The way he spoke to the class and respected everyone else’s opinion was extraordinary. He never judged or excluded anyone from anything and he impacted my life greatly. Mr. Finnochio is the reason why I would like to fulfill a career in education. I have experienced it and I know teachers can make a difference in this
In “What’s Wrong with Schools,” Casey Banas uses the experiences of Ellen Glanz, a high school social studies teacher to express how different students and teachers feel about schooling. Ellen Glanz chooses to improve her teaching by pretending to be a student and sitting in on several classes and what she finds in the typical classroom includes students doing the bare minimum, disinterest, cheating, detachment, the list goes on and on. I agree with Ellen Glanz in that this separation between educators and students causes a great amount of passivity. There is no more critical role in our current society than that of a teacher’s. Teachers help shape the minds of the future. Tomorrow's engineers, scientists, politicians, and educators are all greatly influenced by today's instructors. Without teachers society would not be anywhere near where it is now, and only a select few would have access to learning. Sadly however important teachers are in human civilization, they are still drastically understated, unrecognized and under paid.
On a student’s cell phone, a teacher is caught hitting students with a thick stick. He continually hits everywhere from the students’ hips to the head harshly without a hesitation. This video is opened to the public by a student in the class posting it on the Internet. According to the other students, they were punished because they skipped class when the school inspectors came. All the people who looked at it on the Internet were surprised to see this kind of behavior. Recently, we’ve heard a lot on the media about punishment by teachers in school. Some people agree with the teacher’s power to punish, claiming that it is a part of education. However, contrary to this opinion, I disagree with corporal punishment because physical punishment brings only temporary effects in correcting children’s behavior. Also, it can humiliate a child by insulting his or her personality and have a poor affect on their self esteem. Besides, physical punishment can be abused because there aren’t any concrete standards to regulate how much punishment is proper in disciplining.
I try imparting into them the importance of an education and how they contribute to the growth of our society. In my classroom, I am in control. I draw a clear line between what and how much my students are allowed to do in the classroom. In the first week of school, I establish my authority and I clearly and explicitly express my classroom and outside the classroom procedures that will be followed and the rights that every student has in the classroom. Some examples, all students have the right to learn, all students have a right to be heard, and all students have a right to be respected. There are consequences for those that chose not to abide. The job of a teacher is never easy but we have seen how cooperative discipline and enabling students to feel capable, connected and contributing can improve classroom management and maybe even our own moods. If we create an environment of mutual respect and give our students legitimate power of voice and choice in the classroom we will see positive results in improved student behavior and student achievement. Because when our students believe that they can succeed, they will.
For example only male students in school, teachers use violation as authority, not harsh, but does involve against students’ behavior. Teachers should not use their authority to give any pressure on students, but try to approach with thoughtfulness. Maybe it is because that parents often say “spare the rod spoil the child”, and Instructors often time get to use to how they are treating their child so they’ll likely to do the same to their students. Or some instructor may just simply lost their work ethic. I think all of the teachers should respect every student, and every single student should be treated equally.
Teachers hold a very sensitive role in the modern civilized society. Regarded as social engineers, teachers possess immense knowledge on various issues that affect our daily lives as a community of human beings.
