Going beyond just legalizing same-sex marriage everywhere, the debate is interesting and both sides have valid points. It goes from being against God’s will, to gay couple raising children, and the contradictions of openings the doors to the unknown relationships of others. Also not letting two individuals get married to whom they desire is taking ones civil rights away. Lastly, standing up for themselves and wanting to get married is huge because coming out is probably the hardest thing for them.
Against God’s Will:
When it comes to same sex marriage and religion conversations tend to spark up since apparently in the bible it states that, “If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them” (Leviticus 20:13). But marriage is a binding that necessarily does not need to be held in a church, people usually get marriage at the court house mostly because it is convenient for them. But since the first amendment protects the freedom of religion and freedom of expression from government interference, why is it that when it comes to same sex marriage the government and religion can advocate their voice into making a beautiful thing into an abomination.
The strongest reason why the government gets involved and so touchy about same sex marriage is because of the bible. The hypocrisy comes when the bible is introduced because since people feel so uncomfortable with watching a gay couple they should have their rights away, since it clearly states in the bible it is a horrid act. But why not follow through what the entire bible says and not just pick what is convenient for some people’s likings, for example:

...sexual health, despite economic and legal disparities and social stigma. Many studies have demonstrated that children's well-being is affected much more by their relationships with their parents, their parents' sense of competence and security, and the presence of social and economic support for the family than by the gender or the sexual orientation of their parents (Siegel, Perrin 1.)
Polygamy and Other Unknown Relationships:
Gay men in same sex marriages have been rumored to be more promiscuous than straight men, causing infidelity in the marriages therefore becoming adultery and not setting the foundation of a stable marriage. A couple of well known conservatives, Bill Bennett; education secretary, and Charles Krauthammer; Washington Post columnist go against same sex marriage because they have no desire to accredit polygamy and legalize same sex marriage.
Moody introduces his writing by pointing out the religious oppositions of same-sex marriage is anything but clear cut. With the infinite number of different religions there’s no one set of traditions in scriptures that can define the true meaning of marriage. Many homosexual couples are too often “barred from certain sacraments in the church of their choice.”(354) This makes same-sex marriages almost impossible unless clergy men are willing to defy their own church bans by performing such ceremonies. On the other hand, the states interest in marriage is that of the legal definition. The government Moody explains doesn’t care about the fact that two people are in love and wanting to commit to each other.
...a was based on Christian beliefs, hence, a nation under God. Acts 5: 29 But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than any human authority”(Holy Bible). This Biblical verse reflects the Christian beliefs of our founders that men should try to live their lives as God desires. Leviticus 18: 22 says that you should not lie with another man as a women; it is an abomination (Holy Bible). If the United States was truly obedient to God as it should be then there would not be any laws passed allowing gay marriage or abortion. These go against the Bible, the word of God, but the Government has deemed them acceptable. This issue shows how obedience to authority can cripple a nation. The Government is allowing an issue they should never have considered to become recognized as acceptable. If this path continues, society will continue to crumble and decay.
Sullivan, a proponent of same sex marriages is a firm believer that gay and lesbian couples should be treated as equals in society and no different than anyone else. Many people are afraid of the effects that same sex marriages may have on our culture, and Sullivan explains that gay men and women are no different from anyone else in society as far as political and moral beliefs are concerned. These people are not out to change America as a whole, they just want the freedom to decide and to do as they wish. Sullivan explains that homosexuals want the right to marry for the same reasons as anyone else and that the lobbying of gays in America, for marriage, is not to destroy our moral system or who we are, they just want to be able to devote to one another as a regular couple does.
Marriage, for years has been argued that the rights to it or strictly only between a man and a women. Both sexes are assumed to marry someone of the opposite sex. What if, however, an individual wanted to marry someone of the same sex? Why is this debate so heavily heated amongst individuals? Is it that religion is a large structure base that those in society are guided by? Or is it that individuals do not understand that marriage is a union between two individuals who are in love? Whatever the case may be, there is always someone who has to argue that homosexual marriage is “wrong.”
One year ago, the United States Supreme Court made two judgments in favor of marriage equality. This was once considered impossible, however, the United States has had a tremendous change of heart in supporting gay marriage. People even speculate that same-sex marriage will be legal in the whole U.S. within few years. Currently there are 17 states that have legalized same sex marriage, while in 33 states it remains banned. The majority of the states that still ban gay marriage have a very high Christian population. Many Christians believe that being homosexual conflicts the bible and refuse to accept it. In my opinion this illustrates why it is better to separate state from religion. We have also seen the church try to influence government decision in England, the archbishop of Canterbury recently stated "The concept of marriage as a normative place for procreation is lost. The idea of marriage as covenant ...
The conservatives consistently bring up the topic of same-sex marriage because in conservatism ideology their foundation mainly is built upon traditional beliefs and so the now the acceptance of same-sex marriages as a result of the change in society hugely goes against what they stand for. This change creates a lot of mistrust that they cannot tolerate and so they would take every step to terminate this change in
The issue of gay marriage needs little introduction as it is one of the most widely contended and discussed topics in the United States of America. While the issue is relatively recent one has to question why this is even an issue to begin with. The Supreme Court of the United States ruled that the Constitution guarantees a right to same-sex marriage. Arguments come from both religious groups, as well as secular focused sources. Reasoning against gay marriage ranges from religious immorality, to the idea that giving gays the right to marry would support minoritarianism (giving minority special privileges and advantages in either a legislative or societal capacity). There are countless arguments besides those mentioned, few of which have any substantial grounds to stand on. Gay marriage causes no political or communal grief, except for those who strongly oppose it now. Even for those people gay people exist either way. Whether they are married or not will not change that and their lives will not be dramatically changed from it. Gay marriage has no valid reason to be outlawed and there are plenty of reasons to allow it.
The history of gay marriage is short but not liked as much. From the history of gay marriages there are an estimated number of 250 million people who live in places which accept gay marriage; this is about 4% of world’s population. In the 2nd century in Rome, men of the same age were legally allowed to marry where they were considered to be pagans and the marriages were conducted by the Mother Goddess (Celeste 2010). On April 16, 106, the first Gay marriage was documented in which two men, Pedro and Vandilaz were married in a chapel witnessed by a priest. In the United States, majority of Christians are very active in opposing same sex marriages both vocally and politically. Why is it so? This is against the convectional purpose of marriage and also marriage is defined as union between two people of opposite sex, (Norton, 2004)
After the united states passed the law that same-sex marriage is legal, the government hasn't been giving people their marriage licenses just because of their religious beliefs, “But on June 29, three days after the U.S. supreme court ruled that same-sex marriage is legal in the United States, Davis stepped onto the nation's front page, saying her religious beliefs would not allow her the issue marriage licenses to gay couples”(Karaim). A senator would not give a women her marriage licenses because of her beliefs, after a law was passed saying that is was legal in the United States. Not only is the government not giving someone their licenses because of their religion but are also restricting people in public schools. The government is taking it too far though, “ ...has the government gone too far, among other things, banning prayer in public schools and restricting the use of religious symbols…”(Karaim). Not only is the government stopping it in schools but in jobs too. Network from USA today, has a senator in an interview, “‘it’s keeping folks from having to choose between their jobs and their religious beliefs,’ Berger told AP. ‘ I think that’s important’”( Network). The government is having people who believe a different culture have to choose between their jobs and their beliefs. The government has also stopping
The general outlines to Catholic religion are referenced throughout the bible; nowhere in the bible does it say that same-sex marriage is at all acceptable. Therefore, many religious minorities believe that marriage is only acceptable between a man and a woman. If America prides itself on being the home of freedom and hope, anyone who is truly in love should be married when they want to be. If all marriages were treated equally, America could live up to being the home of the free. By denying same-sex unions, America is violating the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.
Gay and lesbian unions have been for a long time a subject that no one liked to discuss. For the last few decades, gays and lesbians have come out and expressed their sexuality preferences. Many believe that same sex marriage should not be legalized because it's against the moral. It's against the definition of marriage, which is considered as the union of a man and a woman as a husband and wife. Same sex marriage should be legalized because the way society views the union of lesbian and gays can a change. Another reason why same sex marriage should be legalized is that children that are issued from a gay or lesbian couple will be loved and raised in a family that is legally recognized under the law. Lesbians and gays also deserve to have the same rights as heterosexuals.
There are many opponents of gay people as it is, and they all have their reasons to dislike the idea of permitting them get married. One of the main reasons is that the primary purpose of marriage is procreation. Because gay couples are unable to have children, they should not be allowed to marry (Schiffen 495). Another main argument is that the word marriage means the union of one man and one woman. This is a long-standing theme of most major Western religions. Under a proposed bill known as the Defense of Marriage act, marriage is defined as “a legal union between one man and one woman as husband and wife.” Furthermore, it defines a spouse as “ a person of the opposite sex who is a husband or wife” (What 1). Under these guidelines, it is quite obvious that gay couples would not be eligible for marriage. People against homosexual marriage also say that it is a person’s choice to be gay. Since the individual chooses to be a homosexual, they should not be given special privileges. Another argument that you hear is that these couples should not get married simply because of the torment and ridicule they would be faced with in their everyday lives. There are news reports from across America telling about how a gay person was beaten or killed just because they were looked at as different. Some of these people would end up the target of verbal abuse and maybe even physical abuse, just because some heterosexual people see them as different.
Over the last years the topic of same-sex marriage has been of great importance to our society. The idea of the same gender being lawfully married is disturbing to a group of people but in the recent years the number of supporters has increased. The cases that argue for the legalization of same-sex marriage are focusing on the relationship of the individuals and do not see anything in same-sex marriage that could harm our society as a whole. The article “How the President go to ‘I Do’ on Same-Sex Marriage,” published by Joe Becker in April 2014, explains how Barack Obama started saying that he was undecided about the subject matter but is now leaning toward the legalization of same-sex marriage. The subject matter takes a lot of analyzing of what pros and cons are to come from the legalization of same-sex marriage. Same-sex marriage is a global argument that deals with unifying two individuals of the same gender under the law. The main reason that supporters give for justifying same-sex marriage is that it is for the same reason as straight people, to show love and commitment to each other. Furthermore, the argument of same-sex marriage is difficult to generalize because of the multiple factors that need to be taken in consideration when making any decision regarding this topic. Although Becker does have true premises, he lacks clarity in his terms which make his argument be false and invalid.
Why isn’t gay marriage legal yet? How does gay marriage affect people that aren’t gay? Why does it matter to those people? Why can’t gay people have the same rights as straight people? Gay marriage should be legal worldwide. Gay marriage or same-sex marriage is when a man and man or women and a woman get married. Same-sex marriage impacts society in different types of ways, some people are affected by it because they think it is against the bible, others seem to have no impact or problem with same-sex marriage. However for the gay community it affects them, because in some states they are not allowed to marry the one they are in love with it. Also it impacts them because there are groups of people against same-sex marriage and the gay community is constantly being judged by people opposed to same-sex marriage. Seventeen states have legalized same-sex marriage; Thirty-three states banned same-sex marriage. Same-sex marriage provides a more stable environment for children of gay couples. Legalizing same-sex marriage does not affect or harm heterosexual marriages. Marriage is a union of love, not a union of genders.
Legalizing gay marriage has caused many problems in the society today. The U.S. Constitution is making some people go against their religious beliefs because of this law. I personally do not think people should have to go against their religion to support something that God would not be pleased with. We have enough things going on in this horrible world and irrelevant things like this should not be added to society’s problems.
