The Pros And Cons Of Prison-Based Treatment Programs

1422 Words3 Pages

The research studies that have been discussed in this paper have some limitations that the researchers have encountered while obtaining the results of the effectiveness of these prison-based treatment programs. Fortunately however, these limitations did not prove to have a significant impact on the overall result of prison-based programs.
Limitations of these studies

In the study I addressed, in this paper by Wexler, Melnick and Cao on substance abuse treatment “Risk and Prison Substance Abuse Treatment Outcomes”, there were a couple limitations to the study they provided. A key limitation in the study was that randomization of the inmates was only used in the treatment group and the control, but only while the inmate were still in prison. …show more content…

In the study of transcendental meditation, “Walpole Study of the Transcendental Meditation Program in Maximum Security Prisoners III”, the researchers had found some limitations. The Researchers of this study found an interesting possible variable that could have influenced the change in behavior of inmates who participated in this study. This variable noted was the motivation that inmates showed and had in wanting to participate in the programs. Although this was a possible limitation or concern by the researchers, it was taken into consideration and was therefore controlled for in the study. Another possible factor that could have also influenced the results obtained in the study is the participation of the inmates in multiple prison-based programs, not just transcendental meditation. Fortunately however, the inmates in both the treatment group and control group that had participated in the other programs at similar rates, the results still had maintainined that the effects of the transcendental program were effective (Alexander, Rainforth, Frank, Grant, Von Stade, Walton 2008). The possible limitations that were just mentioned could have influenced the results in a negative way, but since they were controlled for, the effectiveness of the transcendental program can be seen as a good …show more content…

The authors of this research made mention that possible selective loss of data on the follow-ups of inmates that participated in the program obtained could have an influence on the results obtained in the study. Fortunately though the amount of data lost in inmates through either the former inmate moving out of the state or dying out were not perceived to have had such a profound effect on the results obtained. Another key possible limitation to this study mentioned consisted of the use of an ex post facto case control research design. The use of this design does not weed out other possible reasons to as why the researchers obtained those results. A possible way to reduce the possibility of this occurring is the use of randomization in order to properly distribute the inmates into the group receiving the treatment. Randomization in prison however was not possible, but thanks to the evidence provided by other research studies on transcendental meditation, it was concluded that the inability to properly use randomization on the prison inmates did not really affect the outcome of the study as was predicted (Rainforth et al., 2008). These possible limitations presented in the studies addressed in this
