Since the basketball revolution took its toll on America in the 1980’s to grow what it is now today, there has always been a debate on which nationally televised events are better. Before comparing and contrasting, there is one thing to keep in mind, the NBA playoffs have the best players in the world competing. While the players in March Madness are playing in college (NCAA) and are still working their way up to get themselves to the NBA level. Each event will be broken down into there categories to determine the pros and cons of each.
The first category of discussion is the format of each event. The format for March Madness goes as follows; a variety of the best division 1 college basketball teams get placed into a bracket of 68 teams. When in this bracket they play a single elimination style progression throughout the bracket, meaning

if the team wins they advance to play the next team, but if they lose, they are out of the bracket. On the other hand, the NBA does things a little differently; the regular season is played for about half the year, and during that time every team in the NBA gets placed from best to worst in their conference which contains fifteen teams. So out of the fifteen teams, only eight teams from their conference are entered into the NBA playoffs, totaling 16 teams; once the playoffs start, each team plays against another team in their conference in a seven game series to find out who advances to the next round. The second point of the discussion is the popularity, viewers, and ticket prices of the events; to determine an equal comparison, the championship game of March Madness, and the fourth game of the NBA Finals will be compared in terms of prices.
To purchase a ticket for March madness it can range anywhere from $200, all the way up to 4,500; this is also the highest ticket available, not counting the ones that were much closer to the court that were probably purchased by celebrities who have the money to spend; speaking of celebrities, it is very well known that celebrity basketball fans to watch and pay the expense of the seat. Although the biggest income stream from the championship is the viewership on television with about 4.4 million people watching in America. In contrast, the NBA Finals game 4 ticket can range anywhere from $1,000 to $6,000, and again that is defiantly not the highest ticket. The NBA finals are always known for their celebrities because it is such a big event, even those who don’t enjoy basketball go; alike the money maker of March Madness, the NBA Finals rakes in about 20 million people watching each
game! The third topic of comparison is the effort category. This category is more about the play of the players on the court because that is ultimately what you are looking to watch. The March Madness players already have “a chip on their shoulder” because of the fact that they are striving to make it to the NBA. The players have it in the back of their head that making it to the championship game could ultimately give them the chance of pursuing a career; in turn they play as hard as they can to obtain that goal. Players in the NBA finals however, have already achieved this goal and are making millions of dollars from it. That is what can separate the good players from the great, the great basketball players; the great basketball players have strive for the championships while the good players can loose their motivation after making the NBA. In conclusion, as basketball continues to grow with more and more viewers every year, it has revolutionized the sports industry. The debate on whether one likes to watch the NBA Playoffs or March Madness more is completely up to them. There are obviously pros and cons to each sporting event like that of format, popularity, and effort. Although luckily we have the opportunity to enjoy both of them through technology and the multimedia tools we have today.
The Bowl Championship Series is a very fair way of determining a college football national champion. Every division one football team has a chance to clime up the Bowl Championship Series rankings. Teams that play harder schedule are favored in the Bowl Championship Series system, therefore a team can not “cup cake” its way to a national championship. With a playoff system, seeding is based solely on a teams record and does not take into account strength of schedule. In the playoff system, a team can put together a relatively easy schedule and be placed into the playoffs over a team that deserves it. Under the current proposed playoff plan, the playoffs will have sixteen teams. In division one football, there are over 100 bowl eligible teams. A lot of teams are going to be left out to dry by the proposed playoff plan.
Each March, there arises some kind of brouhaha across the country or at least within the four walls of colleges across the United States. The cause is the highly regarded single-elimination tournament officially known as the NCAA Men’s Division 1 Championship, and colloquially as the March Madness. As described by Chris Suellentrop on the 6th Floor Blogs of the “New York Times” magazine, this “is the greatest sporting event of the year, and in particular, the tournament’s first weekend serves up the most entertaining four days in sports.” (Suellentrop 2011)
There are thousands of high school football players across the nation, and a handful of them have what it takes to play at the college level. Those that do have the raw talent normally get reached by college football recruiters and coaches. The NCAA, the National College Athletic Association, has many rules and regulations especially surrounding the rules and conduct of recruiting student athletes. Men's football takes the most notice, as well as basketball, of all collegiate sports in the U.S. today (Smith, 2015). According to Langelett (2003), the NCAA limits each school to 85 football scholarships. With a limited number of scholarships available, schools spend a considerable amount of time and money on recruiting players.
Public interest in college sports varies immensely. In 2015, the NCAA Men’s Division I College Basketball
Your perspective may be in full agreement with any of the others, in partial agreement, or wholly different. Whatever the case, support your ideas with logical reasoning and detailed, persuasive examples. Every time the month of March rolls around, there is always some sense of hype in the air. That’s when the nation’s best college basketball teams compete against each other. It is as celebrated with each college being its own celebrity.
One of the top sporting events in the world is considered to be the NCAA March Madness tournament. This tournament is ranked third just behind the Super Bowl and FIFA World Cup. It’s unbelievable to think that one of the top sporting events in the world is college athletics. You have other professional sports like basketball, baseball, hockey and NASCAR, but their championships still don’t compare to the NCAA championship. March madness is so popular that global firms Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc. believe that companies are expected to lose about $1.2 billion because of every hour of work that employees are watching games instead of working (Koba, 2014).
College basketball is full of heart, hustle and the sheer will of wanting to win every single game while in the NBA a loss does not matter to the extent it does in college basketball. When it comes to playoffs in the NBA is nowhere close to as serious and fun to watch as March Madness. March Madness is either win or you die. While the NBA you have seven chances to win four games, with this you lose a certain degree of competition. If you have one chance one shot at winning the national championship the amount of heart and effort that individuals put into the game is so noticeable higher that it is hard to explain. With several March Madness game ending in low score margins that change every few seconds and often games ending with game winning three pointers or half court miracle tosses. When it comes to the comparison of NBA and College Basketball College wins without a
Every March college basketball fans and million alike anxiously await the start of the NCAA tournament. Imagine a business that brings in $60 million each year ,and the people fueling that industry receive none of the revenue(Wieberg). These same people work 40 hours in their sport every week, these “people” are college athletes. The NCAA, the governing body for major college sports, is the industry doing this to college athletes(Edelman). This is an issue of exploitation and control by large institutions over primarily poor people, the NCAA is guiding them in directions to make money for everybody while doing everything possible to keep the players out of the money. College Athletes deserve profit because they bring in large revenue into their program, the NCAA, and they invest tons of time into their sport.
In the NCAA basketball tournament “March Madness” over 60 teams get to play and compete for the national championship and they play multiple games every day so there should be no reason for football to not be able to have at least 8 teams instead of just 4. The NCAA college football playoffs should allow 8 teams to compete for the national championship instead of 4 because: It gives more teams a chance to compete, it makes more money for the schools, and it gets players more NFL attention and will get them more help and will help them become better players.... ... middle of paper ... ...
High school and college basketball players have started to enter the NBA earlier and earlier as the year's progress. In general, this is resulting in a negative effect to the college programs, the NBA, and the players themselves. Before 1994 there were usually only eight to ten early entries into the NBA. The number grew to 18 in 1995, and an astonishing 40 players in 1996, and 47 in 1997. The number of early entries in the NBA grows to the point where it is a problem that needs to be dealt with by the NBA players association. College basketball is in serious trouble. Of course, any sport would be when it's marquee s...
College is a time for young people to develop and grow not only in their education, but social aspects as well. One of the biggest social scenes found around college campuses are athletic events, but where would these college sports be without their dedicated athletes? Student athletes get a lot of praise for their achievements on the field, but tend to disregard the work they accomplish in the classroom. Living in a college environment as a student athlete has a great deal of advantages as well as disadvantages that affect education and anti-intellectualism.
“The college basketball world was turned upside down on Sept. 29 when the the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York laid out findings from an F.B.I. investigation that uncovered mass corruption, bribery and wire fraud involving some of the sport's top programs.” (Rapaport). NCAA scandals have made the college basketball rules and playing style become corrupt. Scandals can be in many forms and have different types of penalties depending on the situation. In a normal scandal coaches want to recruit players and in order to do this the coach might give the players bribes or other things that will make them come play for their program. Also, sometimes the universities may make classes easier for the athletes to pass so
middle of paper ... ... However, if it wants to retain success in the future, it should allow players who wish to enter the NBA to further develop at the collegiate level. The NBA once understood the value of college basketball, and built off of it. March Madness is a goldmine with its high ratings, fan passion, and thrilling games.
