Today, La Mirada High School has a “closed campus” lunch policy. A closed campus lunch policy means that students can not leave campus to eat and are forced to eat food provided by the district at a price rate which the school chooses. Each year La Mirada and other High Schools alike sell hundreds of lunches a day totalling in thousands of dollars in sales. Money is most likely a major factor in why most schools don’t have an “open campus” lunch policy. Is it right that schools only provide one alternative to bringing a sack of lunch to school when it comes to feeding students at school? To me, a policy such as closed campus lunch is unjust and needs to be revised.

Janet Poppendieck is a professor of sociology at Hunter College in New York, and additionally she is the author of several books including her most recent Free for All: Fixing School Food in America. This book centers on America’s recent interest in whether or not our school lunches are healthy. This issue has been put into the spotlight recently through shows such as Jamie Oliver’s School Food Revolution and in the news because recent changes in the Nation School Lunch Program’s dietary guidelines. Poppendieck’s book looks at the in depth reasons into why school lunches have turned into what they are today, what challenges need to be faced in order to fix school lunches, and ultimately how our the system should be fixed. She accomplishes this by interviewing her current college students about their previous school lunch experiences, working in a school cafeteria, interviewing current school employees, and looking at the history and policies of the National School Lunch Program.
The Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act has taken over schools nationwide and needs to be stopped. There are more negatives than positives that go along with this act and there needs to be an end. Schools should not have to waste money on expensive food to have it not be eaten. Students should be able to enjoy what the lunchroom has to offer. The students do not buy these lunches so the food goes to waste. In 2012, when the Healthy Hunger Free-Kids Act was made students stopped eating their school lunches and schools began to lose great amounts money. It 's beneficial to encourage healthy eating habits with schools but this act needs to be reformed.

As reported by Cooper, “ The National School Lunch Program needs 8 billion dollars to feed 30 million children a year to serve high quality foods.” However, this price of amount has to be double to serve healthy foods to students because our next generation has to grow up with high quality foods not with low quality foods. Moreover, according to Cooper, the U.S. spends more than 100 million dollars on fast foods portion which the U.S. suppose to spend less amount of money on fast foods to improve the entire food system of the country. If the U.S. government lower the expense of fast food system and raises the amount of money for school lunches, entire schools of the U.S. would get positive results. For example, students could brainstorm very fast as Albert Einstein, and gain more energy to work out on their gym classes. Furthermore, school have to create agriculture class for students to have strong knowledges in foods. Students can literally be ware of what they eat at their lunch times; they will know vegetables grow in the ground and how foods are really fresh. Therefore, schools must provide farming class as in Berkeley; students have rights to know how foods are important to them. As a result, students could get a lot of benefits for changing school
Most students would love to have off-campus lunch, just like many other students at other schools or in other countries do. If the other schools in the country offer an open-campus lunch, why can’t the Oak Creek High School student body also have an open-campus lunch? With certain restrictions, policies, and rules set, the student body and faculty of Oak Creek High School should be allowed the privilege of an open-campus lunch program. So if the student body is responsible and capable of handling these privileges, why can’t the Oak Creek High School student body and faculty also have an open-campus lunch?
The right to the student should be guaranteed to open campus lunch. We are living in a failed experiment, that is the government controlling the school lunch. It is time to step out of the failed experiment and do another experiment, only this time successful. Student should be allowed to have open campus lunch.
Wandering kids. Bumper to bumper traffic. Drug dealing. Is this the picture drawn when local students have fifty minutes of freedom during lunch to do whatever they please? Students should not be allowed to leave their school campus during lunch. An open campus would lead to truancy, disturb local businesses and neighborhoods, and cause crime.
For the majority of high school students having the option to go home for lunch or to go somewhere to eat would be the ultimate dream. High school students do not think about the dangers and worry that open campus lunch would cause for staff and parents. They do not think about the small sum of students who would spend that time doing drugs or making messes at local businesses. There would also be an amount of students who would not return, or they may be late returning to school due to traffic at fast food places. Faculty would also have the fret of an increase of car accidents caused from the limited time students would have to go wherever and get back before their next class. On the other hand, students would learn responsibilities and time management. Parents would be forced to give their children money to eat out. Along with the money on their school lunch accounts, or they would be apart of the free lunch school program. Schools cannot have open campus lunches

We all remember that day when President Obama took office, and our school lunches changed forever. First Lady Michelle Obama, felt that too many American kids are overweight, so she thought she needed to make our school lunches healthier, with more fruits and vegetables. One of the major changes she made was how many calories the school cooks were able to give the kids. The new requirements are as follows: up to 650 for children in kindergarten through fifth grade, 700 for sixth through eighth graders and 850 for high scholars. These numbers are consistent with the Mayo Clinic’s recommendations ( Kuczynski-Brown). The main goal of cutting calories and taking away junk food, was to insure that kids are getting served a healthy lunch. At each lunch, schools must still provide a cup of fruit, a cup of vegetables, two servings of grains, two ounces of dairy, and a cup of fluid milk, so that students can get their needed vitamins and nutrients (Anonymous) . They are also wanting more local farmers to be involved, and give more of the food they grow to the school. At the high school I went to, we built a green house, and planted a garden to give us some local grown food. It was part of our Ag Science class. School boards have dealt with complaints and issues in regards to letting their students leave school for lunch, which is their “free time” of the day. Certain teachers say the so-called "solution" of closed campus during lunch is the work of district officials who aren’t trusting students during the only time of the day that students can socialize and be free from schoolwork and lecture. If a closed campus will “eliminate” problems such as attendance rates and low budgets for lunch, the lack of freedom will create more problems like rebelling underclassmen and misconduct among the students. What could be a good solution to our school lunches to help children get the right food is, maybe do what Japan does for their lunches, make them from scratch, have longer lunch breaks and treat children equally who aren’t as financially stable as others. In an article, “What Japan Can Teach Us About School Lunches” by Dana Woldow, Japanese students learned the, “you get what you pay for” motto. Also, Japan doesn’t have 15 minute lunch breaks; they have almost an hour lunch break. Woldow concludes that, “High quality healthy food costs more than cheap processed junk…food is not promoted by a 15 minute lunch break; and no one benefits when school lunch policies segregate students by income” (Woldow). Woldow says that until America is willing to invest these kinds of changes in school meals, our school meals will lag behind other countries and continue to have the highest obesity rate in children. Students learn and do their best when they are hungry, and uncomfortable! That makes perfect sense right? If you’re like most Americans, this may be one of the most ridiculous statements you have ever heard. I know I have never done anything better hungry. Many students sit through their lunch time at school because they have no food to eat because they don’t have the money to afford it, or they are not able to bring food from home for various reasons. This is why many schools have free and reduced lunch programs. But not everybody can apply for these programs; even middle class families in today’s economy sometimes can’t give their child cash every day. Times are tough, and every family is different. These are good programs, but they are not good enough. One child missing a meal, and going hungry is too many in my book. That’s why I think it should be at least a state law in North Carolina, if not a federal law, that offers free lunch in all public schools for all students, regardless of income. This way it’s simple, cost effective and easy, and nobody will be singled out, or go hungry if they do not bring their lunch from home.
American schools are under a pressure to serve the children of America now more than ever. On top of trying to create a learning curve to brighten our country’s future, while not leaving any children behind (with the 'No Child Left Behind Act'), the new stress of nutrition has been added to the undoubtedly long list of impossible tasks that United States public schools must accomplish. While there are several ways of implementing changes to the school-served lunches, changing the minds of parents who pack their children’s lunch can be a whole new daunting task. With the U.S. getting more and more parents working instead of staying home with children, it seems convenience and speed have put nutrition and health in the back seat. Even though the public is concerned with child obesity and children’s overall health and well-being, it is the same public that, when broken down into households, is the direct problem. Schools are now supposedly providing ‘healthier’ lunches at their institutes than parents are packing for their own children at home. Although schools are required to provide lunches that contribute one third of children’s daily nutritional value and offer options that include all five food groups, lunches from home have no guidelines to follow. Therefore, schools are now trying to rectify the problem by setting such requirements for packed lunches. However, a new debate has opened; how can a public school in a democratic nation require standards of any kind involving the freedom of being able to pack a lunch for your own child?
