Energy is a daily necessity we take advantage of without fully understanding the consequences of creating it. The electrical energy that we use as consumers comes from power plants that then convert other types of energy to electricity. The most common way this is done is from burning fossil fuels. The only benefits to this method is the low cost and the growing demand for oil, natural gas heating, and other products refined from fossil fuels. The repercussions of this cheap practice is the environmental and physical harm caused by the fumes and other byproducts of using fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are comprised of: Coal, Natural Gas, and Oil. While coal is a huge product used they way it is, Oil can be used in its crude state or refined into other forms of energy. Gasoline is one of the major fuels used for generators or to power engines in cars. This is one of the biggest demands in the US today. With gas prices lowering in the future the demand will only rise with the price being below 2$ a gallon for the first time in a decade. “The US is among countries that pledged Paris to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and address climate change. But if people start driving more because of lower prices, that will work against the goal.” (Brady) Natural gas and propane are slightly better than oil but nowhere as good as the renewable sources of energy. They are both extracted by a dangerous procedure called fracking. fracking is when pipes are built deep underground but still in the drinkable water table (ground water) and then water is sent down to release the trapped gasses then removed to be sold for energy use. There is another form of non renewable energy that has only a small impact on the environment, and it is nuclear energy. This process requires the rare material Uranium which is highly toxic to humans and most other mammals. It is also extremely hard to find and very expensive. In today's global economy, energy is one of the most crucial and sought after commodities. Who supplies it and how much they supply determines how much influence they have over other countries as well as the global economy. This is why hydraulic fracturing is currently such an important and controversial topic in the United States. Hydraulic fracturing, more commonly known as "fracking" or hydrofracturing, is the process of using pressurized liquids to fracture rocks and release hydrocarbons such as shale gas, which burns more efficiently than coal. This booming process of energy production provides a much needed economic boost, creating jobs and providing gas energy for Americans. The efficiently burning shale gas reduces carbon emission from electricity production plants, reducing carbon footprints on the environment. However, the process of hydraulic fracturing uses millions of gallons of pressurized liquid, which contains toxic chemicals, and some of this water is left over undealt with. The air near fracking sites is often also polluted and unsafe for nearby community residents. Injecting millions of gallons of water laced with toxic chemicals into the rock thousands of feet deep can cause earthquakes, causing a safety hazards for all nearby areas. Hydraulic Fracturing makes rare natural gases easily attainable, boosting the economy and reducing carbon emissions. However, the negative side effects such as contaminated water and air, make hydraulic fracturing a process that may not be worth the benefits.
The U.S federal government should significantly increase fracking because oil and gas fracking is big business in America, with more than two million hydraulically fractured wells across the country producing 43 and 67 percent of our national oil and gas outputs, respectively. But in my opinion these wells also nearly played a secondary role as nuclear waste storage sites and had the Atomic Energy Commission had its way with Project Plowshare. And fracking is the process of pumping water deep into the Earth, specifically into underground oil and gas reserves, at tremendous pressures in order to break apart the surrounding rock and free the energy product, which can then be pumped out and used. However in the mid 1950s, scientists from the Atomic Energy Commission and officials from the U.S. Bureau of Mines did begin experimenting with an alternative method of fracking, one that employed nuclear bombs more powerful than anything we dropped on the Japanese.
In 1908, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) predicted that the total future supply of U.S. oil would not exceed 23 billion barrels. In 1914, the U.S. Bureau of Mines predicted that only 5.7 billion barrels of oil remained. In 1920, the USGS proclaimed the peak in U.S. oil production was almost reached. In 1939, the Department of Interior declared that there was only 13 years of oil production remaining. In 1977, President Jimmy Carter claimed, “We are now running out of oil.” Despite these predictions, the U.S. has produced over 200 billion barrels of oil since the early 1900’s. (The Futurist, 1997)

Hydraulic fracturing, also known as Fracking, is a strategic system of obtaining natural gas that could be as deep as several thousand feet underground. Basically a mixture of sand, water, and chemicals are pumped underground at extreme pressures until they hit shale which contains the natural gas and in return the gas is forced up out of the ground. Fracking has become a highly successful process for increasing natural gas reserves in the United States. This process also lowers the United States dependence on foreign gas and oil and it accounts for an estimated forty two trillion cubic meters of natural gas, which is said to be enough to keep the United States in motion for sixty five years. As good as the fracking system sounds, there is always the down sides like the fact that the chemicals used to obtain the gas are extremely toxic. These toxic chemicals are pumped into the ground and can spread into nearby water. If this happens, the water will itself become toxic and undrinkable by neither animals nor humans. There are a lot of pros and cons of fracking, but what many people over the last few years have tried to say is that human life and safety is more important than an easier and cheaper way of doing something.
The dependency on fossil fuels is a pressing issue for not only America, but the whole world. People everywhere continue to search for solutions to the growing problem by taking steps to create a cleaner environment, reduce the price of fuel consumers pay and most importantly, protect the nation’s security from foreigners. America, being one of the leading consuming nations of fossil fuels, is negatively affecting the environmental, economic and political aspects pertaining to its dependency on non-renewable resources.

Semantically fossil fuels are a renewable source of energy, however given that it takes millions of years for the organic materials to be broken down and converted, it is wholly unrealistic to consider them as renewable. As the demand for fossil fuels increases and source diminish faster than they are replentished, the United States must work towards a renewable energy independent state using truly renable sources, both technically and in practice. With changes in the home, as consumers in buying goods and with alternative fuel sources backed by public trust and governmental involvement, the United States could drastically lessen its dependence on fossil fuels, foreign and domestic.

Besides being set up to fail and become inefficient in the future, fossil fuel energy is not clean to use and poses several environmental complications. Coal, for instance is “the dirtiest of all fossil fuels. Coal combustion not only produces sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides that contribute to acid rain and snow, it generates millions of tons of particulates that cause asthma and other respiratory diseases.” As with all usage of fossil fuels, it creates enormous amounts of carbon dioxide, which contributes to greenhouse gas.
