“In the last decades, use of image editing software such as Adobe Photoshop, has become what many consider the most egregious form of photographic manipulation by allowing editors to digitally enhance, change, or modify an image in a variety of ways for a variety of purposes,” (Photojournalism an Ethical approach). The fixing of images has made it hard to believe what is real and what is not. Digital manipulation is the act of editing images in order to create an illusion or deception. (RedBubble) Manipulating images has been around even before Photoshop. The portrait of Abraham Lincoln was not really him. It was his head, but John Calhoun’s body. How was it done? Since computers were not around, they had to do it all by hand. A portrait of a southern leaders body was used, there were not that many heroic pose so they cut Abrahams head from one picture and placed it onto the picture of the body, making it look as if Abraham Lincoln really did take the picture. Even the words on the papers that were lying on the table were changed. (Ethics In Photo Editing) In the beginning computers were not around, so to be able to manipulate pictures they had to come up with their own techniques. Many images were manipulated and very few knew. Families that wanted family portraits but did not get along were able to have a family portrait, but they did not have to be there in the same room. With a lot of work and patience it was done. Each family member would come to the session, but at different times. Pictures of each person were took, then they would use multiple images of the same picture to change the lighting or contrast. For them to all be in the same picture you would cut them out and place them onto the background in which, you took a p... ... middle of paper ... ...ckground, removing unwanted objects in the picture, removing spots on the face, so many things can be done to get a perfect picture. Its easy for a customer to express what they desire and how they wish to change the picture and in return it is convenient for the designers to use the specific tools to make that picture as the client want it to be. This helps in customer satisfaction and helps in maintaining a good and strong relation with them. (Benefits of Digital Manipulation). Many people say that when pictures are manipulated that it ruins the original picture, people take things out of their imagination and make them happen. Some people may not even manipulate pictures for attention, they do it for fun, to express their imagination. Photoshop exist for a reason, why not use it. It is amazing what can be done with just a couple pictures and an editing software.
Henry Peach Robinson and Peter Henry Emerson were two opposites fighting for the same principal; the acknowledgement of photography as an art form. By Robinson’s view, the most valuable aspect of photography was the presence of a distinct and original fantasy outlined by filters of editing enhancements. In addition, he employed a diverse amount of configurations to his illustrations. Techniques such as image misplacement, negative manipulation, and texture tampering were all utilized to exemplify a glorious theme conceived from the imagination.
Media technology is helpful in so many ways; on the other hand, it can be disruptive too. In the article “Why I Just Asked My Students to Put Their Laptops Away,” Professor Clay Shirky claims that students are not able to focus on the lesson and easily get distracted with their laptops, leading him to ban the use of technology devices in his classroom. Similarly, in article “Our Photoshopping Disorder,” fashion reporter Erin Cunningham addresses the topic about the use of photoshopped images in advertisements creating unrealistic standards causing harm to people’s health and well-being. Both article oppose the bad habits that people get by using media technology. Shirky and Cunnignham completely agree in their assessment
Some people may have the same or similar interpretation but as a whole group of people, it is different. The artist whom took painted or drew the piece most likely had a different perspective than the audience. Every moment is different from the present or past. When an artist is creating their artwork, their interpretation can be different than their views a few years ago. Capturing the picture at a certain point in time can be powerful because it shows what the feelings, interpretations, emotions that were expressed at that time. These emotions translate to what the artist chooses to put in their piece, which can be very powerful. In this short essay, “Every Portrait Tells a Lie” by Debra Brehmer, she says “The portrait, in the choices the artist makes, alludes to the fact that who we are involved selection, interpretation, and chance.” (386) Brehmer makes an excellent point that the artist has the control to choose what goes into their piece. The artist can choose to include what they want into their piece, like a person, a plant, and etcetera. In the book The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde, the artist, Basil Howard claims that another character, Dorian Gray, is his muse. Basil paints a portrait of Dorian and this indicates how much power Basil has over the portrait. Basil has the power to choose what goes into the painting and how Basil wants to paint Dorian. Taking or painting a photo shows how much power the artist has because of their interpretation when taking the photo and their decision of what goes into the photo. The choice is completely up to the artist, which makes taking photos such a powerful
Susan Sontag discusses the reality of the modern person’s addiction with “needing to have reality confirmed” by photos. Sontag says “we accept it as the camera records it” then goes to say “this is the opposite of understanding.” I agree with her wholeheartedly, as accepting photos as they are limits ones understanding of the world. The trust in photography led to the rise of pictures hoaxes, in which people take pictures out of context and assign it a new background; as well as Photoshop, which becomes increasingly popular as the years go by. Photoshop allows one to manipulate a photo to portray what they desire it to.
Photoshop was not around in the 1860's, but that didn’t stop people from doctoring photographs. Keith Forrest, Associate professor of Communication at Atlantic Cape Community College says, “As soon as we had the tools to manipulate them [photos] there was an economic incentive to do it. The more provocative the photo---the more readers you could entice.”(“Keith Forrest Interview”) Potentially, the first manipulated photograph is of the sixteenth president, Abraham Lincoln (Morgan). This photograph
To continue, the development of new technologies, such as computers and image editing software, has increased and redefined the nature of false advertising. Programs such as Adobe Photoshop have made the digital manipulation of images possible. One of the functions of this software is “airbrushing”, which in this context refers to the technique used to conceal, eliminate, or alter the appearance of flaws. Image editing software has facilitated the “re-touching of photographs related to any characteristics directly relevant to the apparent ...
An evaluation of the text, Unreal Celebrity Photoshop Transformations, demonstrates the controversy behind altering photos for the public. The video is informing the public on a current issue, in the U.S.A. especially Hollywood, on an already popular topic. The video uses satire to ridicule the unreal photos that we, as a society, still worship and take as a reality that young woman and men work themselves to look like. To do this the video conveys a series of photos, first the real photo without any retouching and then quickly goes to the retouched photo. The layout of the photos is supposed to have a shock factor; therefore the way the video presents the transformation is key to bringing credibility to the photos that were retouched. The pictures are a tactic that exhibits the maker’s credibility along with the logical facts that go with the photos. This logical view of retouched photos is from a quote in the video mentioning that it’s “common knowledge that we can reshape a person digitally.” The statement dictates t...
Photoshop can be used to depict opponents in undesirable situations or to depict events which haven’t actually happened. There have been numerous political scandals where one candidate doctors a photograph of their opponent. In 2012 Wil Cardon, a Republican candidate for the senate, launched a campaign against U.S. Representative Jeff Flake by using doctored photos of Flake to imply that he opposed SB 1070. The pictures had been doctored to feature Flake standing with Obama (McCombs, "Flake: Doctored Photos 'Dishonest '."). Here the doctored photograph was meant to deceive voters into believing an opponent had a certain viewpoint. The pictures depicted a scenario which never happened and may not display the full truth. In this case the doctored photograph crossed the fine moral line. The article Is it Real, Or Is It Photoshoped? discusses the increasing concern of doctored before and after pictures presented to clients by physicians (Anthem Media Group). In this case the photograph is purposely trying to deceive a perspective client into believe that the procedure will be more effective than it actually is. The picture does not present the truth in a scenario where it is unethical not to present the truth. Doctored photographs are not only unethical when they are used deceptively for one’s gain, but also when they are used to destroy another’s
The point of this replacement lies in the photograph's not being the reflection of a fact made by an artist in a drawing, but a precisely caught and recorded fact. This precision and documentary quality make for such a forceful impression that, in painting or graphic art, it would be quite inadmissible. A poster with photographs is more effective than a poster with a drawing of the same subject.’ (Milner and
Throughout the recent years, Photoshop has become a widespread phenomenon amongst the world. With the rapidly developing inventions of camera’s and devices with cameras on them; posting pictures on social media has become extremely popular. Along with that, the pressure to appear perfect in said pictures has increased dramatically. Society has become exceedingly focused on the idea of perfect, and what perfect looks like. Especially now, with growing photo sharing phone applications such as Instagram, photo editing is becoming even more popular. Photoshop has proven to have many beneficial uses; however, it also has very negative consequences such as false perceptions, and misleading people.
Lately it has shown that the images changed or “improved” by Photoshop has caused harm amongst our society. There has to be something down about this problem before other people get hurt. The Federal Government has to do its duty and stop this harm by issuing laws limiting the use of Photoshop. Photoshop can come in quite handy and it is useful when trying to perfect an image. Architects, fashion designers, web designers all use Photoshop in their careers daily but there is a line and some people cross it.
In today 's society, people have a very skewed perception of beauty. People are exposed to so many advertisements and pictures that are photo-shopped each day that many do not even realize what they are looking at. They are seeing an image of something that is not real; something that is not even possible to obtain. Photoshop has an outrageously negative effect on men and women in society, creating an unattainable image of perfection.
Photography is a mindful medium of expression, perspective, interpretation and can sometimes be truth. The changes throughout the history of photography have changed how people see the image they're looking at. In the 19th century, they were no editing options or software of any kind. You just go through the process and take the photo and people could easily tell it was real. Of course it would a shock to see what was once a real life event in that time period, but then transferred on paper "capturing" the moment itself. The truth could easily been seen, now in the 21st century, most of that has changed. There are

As the Global economy pushes deeper into the 21st century one of the largest challenges it will face is labor digitization. This is the practice of decreasing reliance on conventional labor in favor of other forms of labor. This trend of digitization is only going to get more popular as the price of technology decreases. However, this trend is especially challenging for developing nations. These countries don’t necessarily have the infrastructure to support labor digitization and many of them rely on their cheap exports for economic growth. With their exports no longer cost effective, due to the high cost of human labor versus robotics, they will have to change their economies just to survive. Infrastructure development is needed along with decreased export reliance, increased skilled labor, increased communication between the private sector and educational institutions, and increased domestic consumption and urbanization. The task is to carry out that change in a stable and economically beneficial way and it should be recognized that all nations are involved together, both developed and developing, as they are all part of the global economy.
