Concealed weapons permits, could be one of the biggest conflicts going on right now. The world is as not a dangerous place, it’s only as dangerous as you make it. Just like guns, guns are not dangerous nor do they make people dangerous; people make guns dangerous. Their major controversy over people carrying guns on their make cause an increase in crime. Along with and increase crime critics also are saying carrying a concealed weapon does not mean a dangerous person will get their hands on one. Critics say “individuals having a concealed carry permit causes an increase in crime rate.” Which in certain cases this is true from the years 1977 to 2010, nationwide statistics show there was a 2% increase in murders, 9% increase in rapes, burglary, …show more content…
Individuals carrying weapons makes the world a more dangerous place and can lead to a crime rate explosion. If a person is carrying a gun, weather it’s on their person or in their vehicle they are more likely to use it. Humans will think because they have a gun they are more powerful then the person standing next to them and they can get away with anything. However these few statistics could be true, it is over a very wide range of time. In the United States currently 11.1 million people have a concealed carry permit. In the year 2013 a survey went around the nation to 15,000 retired police officers and 91% of them said they felt safer in public having a concealed carry permit and saw a decrease in crime in their area. The states that issued the “shall-issue” concealed carry laws saw a decrease in murders by 8%, rapes 5% and robberies by 3% according to 2000 FBI crime data. There are critics all over the world …show more content…
In Florida there was about 1,400 people that pleaded guilty or no contest to a felony. Most of these felons had gun related offenses. Between March 2007 and May 2014 there was about 622 deaths of, regular law biding citizens and about 14, law enforcement. Past and Present criminals are getting their hands on weapons with ease nowadays. All they have to do is go to a Pawn Shop and say, “I want that one.” Keeping all of this in mind not every person that handles a gun is dangerous. If someone wants a concealed weapons permit legally they have to go threw several tests, background checks and a cool down period. A few of the tests they will take are a gun safety test at the end of the course. This test will quiz them on when and when not use their weapon, proper weapon use, and basic safety questions. The individual will then take a range test, the individual must hit a target from 11 feet away and it must be within a certain distance of the bull’s eye. The applicant fails to do this they will not be issued a permit and have to retake the test at another time. But if they pass the test the applicant will be issued their license, but they have to have a “cool down” period, which, is a three-day grace period before they will be issued their gun after purchase. Cool down periods are mandatory for any weapon purchase, this give the buyer a
Many Americans are now applying for a license to carry licensed concealed arms with them. The rate at which licenses are being approved is worrying. This development is concerning law enforcement authorities. Putting so many firearms at the disposal of the public is counterproductive to the gains that are being made on improving security and especially in the cities where incidences of gun crime and violence are on the rise.
The sweat was dripping down my face as I pushed the weights off my chest. Everyone ran towards their bags after a student said there was a gun in school. Twitter was the first source that we checked just to make sure. Boom! The door slammed open as coach Ben yells “Hurry up and get out”. My heart started beating faster and faster. We didn’t know what was going on. As we were running to the gym everyone was panicking and pushing each other. I could feel the burn on my elbow but I didn’t know what it was. When we got to the gym my elbow was covered in blood. We were told to get down and stay quiet. Later on we were told a student brought a gun to school and was planning on committing suicide. That was one of many gun incidents at my high school.
Gun admirers have statistics that will prove their side on guns saving lives. According to one study by Lott “… for each additional year that laws allowing people to carry concealed handguns were on the books, robberies decli...
“Carrying a concealed handgun in public is permitted in all 50 states as of 2013. Some states have “unrestricted carry” and do not require permits” (ProCon.org 1). Law abiding citizens can apply for a “concealed carry permit” if they have no record of mental illness and no criminal record. The permit allows them to carry handguns not only at home, but almost everywhere they go. More women are buying handguns than ever before and going through the training to get a license to carry(The Economist 1). Before, you had to prove you had a need to get such a permit. In 1989 the National Rifle Association (NRA) started a nationwide campaign to get laws passed that made it legal for law abiding citizens to carry a concealed handgun. Their argument was that criminals who knew that their victims were armed would be less likely to attack (New York Times 1).
McMahan, 3) So, McMahan’s main premises come into play, either everyone has guns, including criminals, or nobody has guns. “Gun advocates prefer for both rather than neither to have them” McMahan remarks, but ultimately that will just leave the country open to more violence and tragedies. “As more private individuals acquire guns, the power of the police declines, personal security becomes a matter of self help, and the unarmed have an incentive to get guns.” (McMahan, 2) Now everyone is armed, and everyone has the ability to kill anyone in an instant, making everyone less secure. Just as all the states would be safer if nobody were to possess the nuclear weapons, our country would be safer if guns were banned from private individuals and criminals.
John R. Lott, Jr., PhD, author of More Guns, Less Crime: Understanding Crime and Gun Control Laws, stated, "States with the largest increases in gun ownership also have the largest drops in violent crimes... The effect on 'shall-issue ' [concealed gun] laws on these crimes [where two or more people were killed] has been dramatic. When states passed these laws, the number of multiple-victim shootings declined by 84 percent. Deaths from these shootings plummeted on average by 90 percent and injuries by 82

Everyone has had that time in their life where they feel that they would be safer if they had some sort of protection, concealed carry is a great option for protection. Over the years it has been growing in popularity, more and more people are going out and getting their concealed carry permit. With more and more people going out and getting their permit, some may view it as dangerous, while others feel it is a necessity. Concealed carry is essential because, it allows added protection, has certain restrictions that the person must meet, and if guns are handled properly they are not as dangerous
Since 2007 the amount concealed gun permits have increased from 4.6 million to 12.8 million. Even last year the number of permits issued had increased by 1.7 million. As a result of more permits robbery, violent crimes, and murder rates have plummeted. The number is most likely to increase to since that gun permits are now not required to carry a gun in eight states. Citizens should be able to carry a
Concealed weapons in college campus’s have been a big issue since the mass shootings in Virginia Tech and Northern Illinois Universities. Allowing for guns to be allowed in college campus’s would be a bad thing to do since it would create additional risks for students, even if weapons were allowed it wouldn’t deter the shooter, and it would detract from a healthy learning environment. So far there is only five states , Colorado, Mississippi, Oregon, Utah, and Wisconsin, that allow “concealed carry” at school campus.
This is caused because the more guns there, are the less violence there is. Dangerous criminals will think twice about robbing someone that has a gun. A victim with a gun is no longer a victim because they can not fight back against the attacker. Therefore, they can save their lives and save lives of the public which need help at that moment. Lott states, “The estimated annual gain from 1992 from allowing concealed handguns was over $5.74 billion” (House Report). This states that when a decline in violence goes down the amount of money goes up. Concealed guns can only benefit everyone in multiple ways. Concealed weapons can help create the feeling of safety and reduce violence. No one wants to live in
With the rise in mass shootings, more Americans are choosing to obtain a permit for a concealed handgun. Unfortunately, most of these shootings are taking place in public buildings where people are banned from bringing their concealed weapons. If these types of bans do not stop criminals, then law-abiding citizens should not be denied the chance to protect themselves and others. There should not be any public building where a person that has legally obtained a concealed-carry permit can not be allowed to bring his or her weapon.
...andgun license holders were arrested for a total of 5,314 crimes from January 1, 1996, to August 31, 2001” (Center). This shows that because the person know has the ability to hide a pistol on their person, they are more prone to committing a crime.
Citizens want to conceal carry a handgun because every day there are dangerous individuals who prey on the weak. In addition to that, concealed handguns are an effective non-lethal form of self defense the majority of the time. Gary Kleck from the Federal Bureau of Investigation “estimated that, 2 million to 2.5 million victims annually use handguns to repel criminal attackers” (Kates). The surprise of being armed is the advantage for the victim, which the victim has the disadvantage of knowing the time and place of being attacked. Concealed carry actually provides protection to citizens that do not carry because the criminals are not sure who is able to defend themselves....
As of 2013, all 50 states allow concealed carry of handguns (Concealed Carry Reciprocity Maps), although a few states don’t require a permit and the standards for licensing vary greatly from state to state. In the U.S. most states are “Shall Issue” states. This means they will grant anybody a permit that meets certain guidelines such as being 21 or older and not having any felony convictions, a history of mental illness or domestic abuse. A handful of other states are “May Issue” states. In these other states, such as Maryland, a permit will only be issued if you can prove you need it. This can be a large obstacle and these states will usually only issue permits to people in the public eye, wealthy individuals that are well-connected or business owners frequently transporting large sums of cash (Concealed Carry Reciprocity Maps). Although the requirements and standards are different wherever you may live, one thing holds true- concealed carry permit holders are rapidly growing. The market for handgun training, concealed carry courses and smaller, more concealable handguns have opened up. When concealed carry was first gaining popularity there were two very different schools of thought. Some thought that violent crime would decrease, as criminals would fear the everyday person that just may happen to be armed. Others thought that having people carrying around concealed handguns in public would lead to an increase in violent crime with people losing their temper and shooting each other. When analyzing the data and crime trends, it is clear that with this influx of concealed carry permit holders there has not been a corresponding increase in violent crime.
