Coal is very important because it is used to make electricity. This is true however coal has many other uses which will be outlined in this report. This report will also explain what coal is, what coal is used for, how coal is formed. It will also detail how coal is located through to the process of how coal is mined in particular open-cut mining. I am also going to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of coal usage and mining. how coal is extracted from the ground, we will also be looking at a flow chat about the steps of an open-cut mining in progress, the disadvantages and advantages of consumption of coal and if overall coal mining good, bad or important.

During this process the dead plants and organisms go through a process called carbonisation which forms into a rock which we know as coal. Before mining starts geologist must locate the coal. They do this by geochemical and geophysical surveys. Geochemical is when they measure the chemistry of rocks, the soil and stream sediments or plant to see the abnormal chemical patterns that might possibly point to areas of mineralisation. Geophysical is when they determine the layout of the Earth’s subsurface by measuring the difference between rock types or physical break or gap without seeing them directly. They do these tests to make sure that there is coal where they want to mine so they don’t waste money on digging in a place that has nothing there that they want. Once all the test are finished and they come back positive that there is coal in that area then they begin to mine. Coal is extracted from the ground by mining. There are many types of methods for mining, such as strip mining, contour mining and underground mining but the type of mining method that I am concentrating on is surface mining but comely know as open cut

Who supplies it and how much they supply determines how much influence they have over other countries as well as the global economy. This is why hydraulic fracturing is currently such an important and controversial topic in the United States. Hydraulic fracturing, more commonly known as "fracking" or hydrofracturing, is the process of using pressurized liquids to fracture rocks and release hydrocarbons such as shale gas, which burns more efficiently than coal. This booming process of energy production provides a much needed economic boost, creating jobs and providing gas energy for Americans. The efficiently burning shale gas reduces carbon emission from electricity production plants, reducing carbon footprints on the environment. However, the process of hydraulic fracturing uses millions of gallons of pressurized liquid, which contains toxic chemicals, and some of this water is left over undealt with. The air near fracking sites is often also polluted and unsafe for nearby community residents. Injecting millions of gallons of water laced with toxic chemicals into the rock thousands of feet deep can cause earthquakes, causing a safety hazards for all nearby areas. Hydraulic Fracturing makes rare natural gases easily attainable, boosting the economy and reducing carbon emissions. However, the negative side effects such as contaminated water and air, make hydraulic fracturing a process that may not be worth the benefits.
The U.S federal government should significantly increase fracking because oil and gas fracking is big business in America, with more than two million hydraulically fractured wells across the country producing 43 and 67 percent of our national oil and gas outputs, respectively. But in my opinion these wells also nearly played a secondary role as nuclear waste storage sites and had the Atomic Energy Commission had its way with Project Plowshare. And fracking is the process of pumping water deep into the Earth, specifically into underground oil and gas reserves, at tremendous pressures in order to break apart the surrounding rock and free the energy product, which can then be pumped out and used. However in the mid 1950s, scientists from the Atomic Energy Commission and officials from the U.S. Bureau of Mines did begin experimenting with an alternative method of fracking, one that employed nuclear bombs more powerful than anything we dropped on the Japanese.

How coal is formed is quite an interesting topic. It started over millions of years ago in ancient swamps when vegetation and trees died and formed peat (it is where vegetation builds up and turns into a super messy pile of stuff). This peat was eventually covered with either dirt or sand. As the peat is covered and pressure the gas that the peat gives off starts to get trapped in the new forming coal.
