Is banning books the best option?

“More than 11,300 books have been challenged since 1982 according to the American Library Association,” (“About”). These 11,300 books have content that some people do not agree others should be reading. The challenged books may cause a conflict to a reader. One reason to resolve the conflict is by banning or burning books. Banning and burning books is a problem faced all around the world. Is banning and burning books the right way to get rid of conflict? Even though books offer conflict, they should not be banned or burnt because banning books destroys knowledge and history, and there will always be people who have a constant hunger for knowledge that can be fulfilled by books.

One global example of a recent group which bans books is ISIS.“When members of the Islamic State group invaded the Central Library of Mosul earlier this month, they were on a mission: to destroy other people's ideas...These books promote ‘the rejection of religion and call for disobeying Allah. So they will be burned,"(Press). ISIS is trying to destroy other people’s ideas so that everyone will agree with their religious ways. Their effort to burn books may seem reasonable but in reality, they should not do that because no matter what not everyone will never agree on just one religion. Not only does this happen globally, but banning books is also put into effort in schools and education. Another example of people destroy knowledge and history is the burning of educational textbooks. “The BJP activists today burned a copy of history textbook for class VIII of the West Bengal Education Board in which a chapter described Shaheed Khudiram Bose as some freedom fighters against British Raj as the terrorists.” (“"BJP Burns History Textbook that Says Khudiram Bose a Terrorist.")The BJP is a Hindu nationalist group.
