CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

As state school testing becomes more and more rigorous and districts strive for ultimate score improvement, challenging behavior in elementary schools is on the rise and not slowing down. Teachers report increases in extreme behaviors from prior years (Townsend, 2018). The Progressive Era (1890-1919) shaped educational progressivism by transforming the American education systems through pedagogical and philosophical underpinnings (Riley, 2012).
Students are missing critical social learning skills with the diminishing time for structured play in early learning classrooms. The absence of these foundational skills sets the precedence for behavioral failures later in elementary school.
