CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
As state school testing becomes more and more rigorous and districts strive for ultimate score improvement, challenging behavior in elementary schools is on the rise and not slowing down. Teachers report increases in extreme behaviors from prior years (Townsend, 2018). The Progressive Era (1890-1919) shaped educational progressivism by transforming the American education systems through pedagogical and philosophical underpinnings (Riley, 2012).
Students are missing critical social learning skills with the diminishing time for structured play in early learning classrooms. The absence of these foundational skills sets the precedence for behavioral failures later in elementary school.

(1) The Center on the Social and Emotional Foundations for Early Learning, or CSEFEL, is a training model designed to provide teachers with curricula and skills to promote social-emotional learning in their preschool classrooms in order to prevent challenging behaviors (CSEFEL, n.d.). I interviewed Dr. Mary Louise Hemmeter, who is the principle investigator at CSEFEL at Vanderbilt University. This center works with child care programs, preschools, and Head Start programs to prepare children for the transition into kindergarten, where self-regulatory and social-emotional skills are necessary (Hemmeter, Ostrosky, & Fox, 2006). The article explores the conflict between children's play and meeting academic standards; more frequently, teachers are forced to limit playtime in order to teach essential skills to students; however because of limited imaginary play, increased academic demands of young children, and more realistic toys, children are almost unable to imagine. Although play has been proven to benefit children’s cognitive and social development, administrators do not consider it to be an important aspect of young children’s education. Because of this, preschool and kindergarten teachers are put in a challenging predicament; in order to compensate for children’s lack of play, teachers would need to prioritize play development at the level in which they prioritize phonics awareness and fine motor skills development. Although it is difficult to do, it is not impossible to incorporate play into the curriculum. Teachers can facilitate mature play by providing multi purpose props, encouraging children to create their own props, and allowing time for children to plan their roles and scenarios for dramatic play. Where did some of modern America's issues originate from? The answer to that is the Progressive Era. The Legislation of that era laid all of the groundwork for today, and much of it is still in public debate today. Roosevelt, Taft, and Wilson, three of the presidents from that era, all played roles in the groundwork. These presidents passed acts, tariffs, and amendments that are still with us, and debated today.
Harry L. Gracey’s article about his perspective of kindergarten as a “academic boot camp” for children really challenged my previous thoughts regarding the structure of school and education. I enjoyed his in-depth look into the physical and social structures of an actual kindergarten classroom and his critical approach in analyzing their daily routine. Before reading the article, I didn’t realize the extent in which education, especially kindergarten, is constructed with systematic activities and programs so that children can be socialized and shaped into good students. Being so young, I obviously don’t remember kindergarten being so structured but I now understand the need for this as the transition from kindergarten into higher levels of learning is important. It’s shocking to know that what I learnt in kindergarten is a large portion of why I am
John Dewey’s progressive thoughts on education influenced American educators and the Common Core proves that Dewey’s philosophy still penetrates the America’s school system. Dewey was in favor of “schoolhouse experimentation,” meaning that educators should continually reject old methods in favor of new ones. The Common Core can be seen as this type of experimentation, leaving some educators to complain that “we are a nation of guinea pigs.”

Over the course of the next school year, countless elementary school teachers will be spending their own money stocking their classrooms with supplies which may not last more than a few months. Unplanned, new students will arrive throughout the year with little more than a pencil and a backpack, certainly not enough to get themselves engaged in active learning with the rest of their marker-wielding classmates. At the age of 2 to 3, children tend to explore more as well as investigating the environment and then this will be a guidance into play and most of the time social play is where children have interactions between themselves or between others children and educators. With social play, children gain social skills and pro social skills. For examples, children will try to find other children to play with, detect and agrees differences in others, contributes as fellows in a group or even they will work unitedly with others to finish task. Social development includes in the acquiring of values and understanding and thus helping children to contribute positively to the family, school and community. Moreover, children are more developed by social play, that is, it helps them to train more of the oral and non-verbal communication by exchanging roles. It also helps children to wait for the turn taking and sharing of toys. Smilansky and Shefatya (1990) contend that the success of the school mostly rely on the children’s skill to cooperate clearly with peers as well as adults. However, despite the unquestionable link to a brighter future for the children who engage in it, less and less time is being allotted for play in the classrooms. As standards for what children are expected to know at younger and younger ages continues to rise along with the demand for standardized testing from the state, time for play is being sacrificed. Adults are choosing to get rid of time for unstructured play and recess to make time for this new testing interfering with the time allotted for children to learn independently through play. Cutting play and recess is a mistake, and here is why: “recess gives students time for social interactions: for students must be able to initiate, negotiate, cooperate, share, and build relationships with one another--skills that are highly valued in the adult world but that often are quite different from work or play under adult supervision and control” (Chang). Those skills learned through play, are often not the sole purpose of a classroom lesson and could potentially be the only place they learn those needed skills. Play is an affective measurement in the classroom as well as outside of the classroom and children can learn so much from it if only given the chance
Children should be socially and emotionally ready to be able to make the social adjustment in the classroom environment. Preschool teachers should focus more on children’s social skills than rather pressured into teaching academics, but that may not be considered best practice. In fact, children who have been rejected by their peers in kindergarten shows poor school performance. Children who lack social and emotional skills are being kicked out of kindergarten. As a result, they are not receiving the information that is being taught. Factors that influence children’s transition to kindergarten are children’s home environment and the preschool program they attend between preschool and kindergarten (Deyll-Gingold, 2007). A good education has always been drilled into my head ever since I was a little girl. Boy did I hate that, all I wanted to do was goof off and have fun with my friends. But as the years went on I started to realize how important it was to have a good education. Not that that made me like school anymore than I did; but I was realizing the different ways I was learning and how different people taught. I remember saying one day, when I was a freshman in high school, that if I was teaching this class I would have never taught it that way. Unfortunately, my teacher overheard me and I was forced to go to the front of the room and explain to the class the way it should be taught since I knew so much about teaching. Needless to say I did an awful job of it. That is when I started thinking about becoming a teacher. I know that does not make sense because I did such an awful job and was humiliated doing it. I did not like the way that man taught and I was determined to take his job. However, the reason I am here today is not that I want to take a teacher’s job; it is because I have the desire to make a difference in the lives of many students. I hope I will be a good teacher so that I will never have to hear a student say something bad about my teaching.
“Education is a social process; education is growth; education is not preparation for life but is life itself.” John Dewey describes and supports progressivism, an education philosophy that I professionally identify with. Progressivism is a student centered philosophy that focuses on experiences, opportunities, and values that enhance a student 's learning and life. The role of the teacher is to act primarily as a facilitator of learning, they encourage and guide students to explore and promote individual development. As a future educator I believe it is important to involve students and allow them to take responsibility for their own learning and achieving their goals. The role of the student is to discover, engage, and express themselves.
