The Process and Components of Preserving Food Preserving is a means of storing, food both raw and cooked for a future date. When you preserve you are following centuries of an old tradition of putting food by. In order to do this, you have to seal the food in an airtight container and process it in such a way that the four main spoliers- enymes, molds, yeast, and bacteria are removed and your food is safe to eat. Preservatives are something used to preserve food. Natural or chemical substances are added to food to inhibit spoilage; also, to protect food from decay or fermentation. Three things that will prevent the growth or slow down the growth of these spoilers: heat, cold and the use of acidity in the product. The point …show more content…
Preserving protects food from microbes and other agents. Preservation keeps good appearance, flavor, texture, and original nutritional value. In addition, some things that make food spoil are microorganisms such as bacteria, and fungi. Atmospheric oxygen can react with food constituents that causes rancidity or color changes. Salt: Salt has been used, since ancient times, especially for meat, as a preservation technique for preserving foods. Salted meat can last for years. The salt enters the tissue and in effect binds the water, inhibiting the bacteria that causes spoilage. The salt restricts to tiny concentration and protects food from yeasts and molds. Salt has anion from hydrochloric acid. Salt is also known as sodium chloride. The salt draws out moisture and creates an environment inhospitable to bacteria. Sugar: Sugar is important. It is an organic compound called carbohydrates. It is sweet in taste and used to sweeten other things. The sugar is in a form of white or clear when it is refined from a raw state.
High Fructose Corn Syrup is found in a lot of the foods and drinks we consume. It is something that is consumed on a regular basis by not only Americans but by plenty of others across the world and sometimes we might not even note the difference between it and “real” sugar. HFCS comes from a type of corn known as “Dent” corn, dent corn is transformed into cornstarch by being cleaned, soaked, ground, milled, and dried corn starch is then converted into a liquid state in a process known as hydrolysis (Sloan, 2013). Once in a liquid state, HFCS is then used to not only add a sweet flavor to drinks and food but it also can be used as a form of coloring to the consumables. What you would label as “regular” sugar is essentially the same the same thing as HFCS when you break them down chemically, the only difference between the two is that their chemical components are placed in different order (Beil, 2013).

Introduction White sugar generally called sucrose originates from two compounds of sugar, fructose, and glucose, combined. Sucrose, which is naturally white, is commonly produced from sugar cane or sugar beets. In both cases the procedure of extracting sugar is the same: The sap is filtered to eliminate plant substances and boiled down. What remains is thick syrup from which sucrose begins to crystallize. The syrup is turned in a centrifuge to split out the crystals, which then make up raw sugar.
Moreover, it is important that foods be stored properly to avoid contamination and spoilage of the foods (CFISIG, 2004; BCCDC, 2010). The storage of foods in these rooms was well organized and properly maintained. All foods had lids on the containers and the dough and pizza racks had covers on them. Furthermore, there were no foods that were stored on the floor and raw products were not stored with ready to eat products. This will ensure that the food will not be contaminated from events such as water leakages or spills and will also help facilitate cleaning the floor under these products. In addition, the sanitary condition of the dry storage room is imperative to prevent the attraction of pests. The dry storage room contains food sources, is relatively warm, and provides shelter. All of these conditions are favourable to pests, which is why the dry storage room must be maintained in a sanitary manner to prevent the attraction of pests. The dry storage room at this facility was well maintained. All foods were on shelves a few feet off the ground, their containers closed, there were no signs of spills on the floor, and there were no
That same molasses color is what differentiates brown sugar from refined white sugar. Refined white sugar has been spun in a centrifuge and has undergone other forms of processing to remove all its molasses, thus rendering a purer product that has no flavor aside from sweetness. Both light and brown sugar make good rapadura substitutes because they have some of the molasses added back. They are also good substitutes simply because they are much easier to find. You should be able to find them on the shelves of most grocery stores.

Not all sugars are made the same. Sugar is naturally found in many foods like fruits, vegetables, and dairy. It is also an added ingredient in many processed foods like soups, condiments, and beverages. The sugars added to foods tend to be highly concentrated and devoid of other nutrients. In contrast, natural sugars are integrated into

Canning is a simple method for capturing food’s delicious and wholesome qualities at natures very best and for preserving food for enjoyment at a later time. Nowadays people choose for can because it may saving the available food for later use. One of the most common methods for preserving foods today is to enclose them in a sterile container. Canning can be glass, plastic and metal can and the basic principle of canning is that a food is sterilized, usually by heating, and then placed within an air-tight container. In the absence of air, no new pathogens can gain access to the sterilized food. In most canning operations, the food to be packaged is first prepared in some way—cleaned, peeled, sliced, chopped, or treated in some other way—and then placed directly into the container. The container is then placed in hot water or some other environment where its temperature is raised above the boiling point of water for some period of time. This heating process achieves two goals at once. First, it kills the vast majority of pathogens that may be present in the container. Second, it forces out most of the air above the food in the container.
