Everyone living in the 21st century has become more environmentally cautious, we recycle, and come up with new ways to repurpose existing products. Some of us go as far as volunteering time to pick up trash on beaches. Humans strive for sustainability but choose to ignore environmental precautions unless it poses a health hazard. Ever since the beginning of the 20th century Tijuana has had a problem with pollution in it’s waterways. The question one might ask is why has it gotten so bad? Behind Millerton Lake, lies an existing structure made up of concrete of 319 foot high, this dam is called the Friant Dam. In the San Joaquin Valley below the project's authority of Fresno, Madera, Kern, and Tulare; the water holds and deliver up to a million acres. In 1933 and throughout 1934, the state couldn't find enough contributors to buy revenues bonds to complete the project. Luckily, the River and Harbors Act of 1935 by the United States Congress came through and financed under the United State Army Corps of Engineers.
As I looked out the window of the restaurant, I could see the sun bouncing off the sparkling water below. Boats and other water craft scatter the water as well as people on water-skis and inner tubes. The picturesque view makes life seem so much better and just looking at the river makes a person calmer. The scene just described is the view from the window of a restaurant called Sophia in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and the corresponding river is the mighty Mississippi. Although Minnesota is the land of 10,000 lakes, this scene could be found right here in the valley of Phoenix. The way this is possible is through the Rio Salado Project.
In the Rio Grande Valley littering is a big issue when it comes to animals and their habitats. Many individuals tend to throw trash on the streets and oceans when they go to beaches, for example South Padre Island. When people go on vacations, they always leave their trash on the sandy beaches and do not pick it up. This kind of action result in a bird confusing the plastic garbage for food and consuming it. Garbage is very dangerous for animals it can injure them and damage their digestive system which can sometimes result in death.
In the early 1880s, Chicago was a bustling city on its way to becoming one of great cities in the world. There was a problem though. Horrible sanitation problems plagued the city. The Chicago River was virtually an open sewer covered with visible filth. Most of the river’s worst pollution came from homes and bathroom waste thought the city. “Bubbly Creek” was one of the worst branches of the river. It was filled with enough stockyard waste to equal the pollution from a sizable city. To further the problem, all of the contents of the river flowed into Lake Michigan, polluting Chicago’s drinking water causing a sever outbreak of water born diseases.

Then the documentary tackles Puget Sound. The Duwamish River is the largest hot spot in the nation. In 2001, the Duwamish River was classified as a “Super Fund” site. This is given to a site that will receive federal assistance for clean up. But yet, it may be too late. Puget Sound in contaminated with PCP, lead and mercury. The threat comes from the giant industrial polluters of old and from chemicals in consumers’ face creams, deodorants, prescription medicines and household cleaners that find their way into sewers, storm drains, eventually into America’s waterways and drinking water.

The Supreme Court of Argentina decided to create a clean up day in 2008. This day was created to clean up the river basin. Unfortunately, this day was not successful. In fact, on the clean up day, the Río de la Plata was polluted when many trash and chemical dumps were dumped in the river. In 1998, the EcoPlata project began and became another way Argentina was responding to the pollution in the Río de la Plata. This project was made to manage, preserve, and use the Río de la Plata’s resources economically. The EcoPlata project is also trying to fundraise money to expand the project. To decrease the air pollution, La Plata mainly uses trains and buses instead of multiple personal cars. Using fewer vehicles helps reduce the pollution

Water pollution has had devastating effects on the environment, which include irreversible effects on the oceans ecosystem. People often underestimate the importance of the ocean. They don’t realize how much damage pollution has caused to the ocean and the thousands of creatures that inhabit it. Earth is a huge place, but resources are actually very limited and will not last forever unless there is a balance. We must protect the resources we have in order for them to last into the next generation.

The problem with contaminated beaches will soon take effect on everyone. The main causes that pollution creates in the beaches are from heavy rainfall, natural disasters, and plant malfunctions. Government agencies cannot control the weather, but they can control what goes into the water. In the United States, the number one reason why beaches are closed down are due to contamination in the water that may be harmful and are left untreated. The arising problem with the beach is that the industries are producing toxic chemicals and tossing the unwanted waste into the ocean. Also, the public are recklessly throwing their trash out into the streets. A prime example to demonstrate this is, if someone was trying to throw a bottle into a street trashcan but missed, he/she is unlikely to pick up after himself/herself if no one was around to see it. This scenario causes pollution to the sidewalks. When mother nature disasters occur, these waste products will end up in the storm drains and into the sewage system.
