It was not until 1950, that the carbon dioxide level exceeded the average and almost doubled according to NASA. In the article written by NASA, it was stated that there is different amounts of carbon dioxide and other gases in the atmosphere that started to appear in the mid-nineteen century. These gases are produced by the greenhouse effect and other different mankind activities like the burning of fossil fuels, clearing of land for agriculture, and industry. Humans contributed in the change of the natural effects of the greenhouse. The burning of fossil fuels like coil, oil, and other fuels is the number one way that mankind has changed the greenhouse effect. The number one chemical that fossil fuels contain is carbon. When carbon is released to the atmosphere, it mixes with oxygen to create a harmful chemical, known as carbon dioxide. Nature is unpredictable and can change at any moment. Nature plays its own role in climate change. The earth’s temperature is dependent on the balance of the energy entering and leaving the planet, which is also known as solar radiation. Islands and dry areas are more susceptible to an increase in temperatures due to the amount of energy that can be generated and released back to the atmosphere. As the ozone is breaking down, the amount of solar radiation being generated and released to the atmosphere is greater than before, which causes temperatures to increase. In an article written by Bryan Nelson, it states that the Northern Hemisphere usually gets warmer than the Southern Hemisphere due to the larger amount of land mass found in the Northern Hemisphere (Nelson). According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in the past year, the change in the planet’s orbit has led to an increase in temperatures. During earth’s orbit, the earth goes around the sun, there is moments when earth moves closer and farther to the sun than usual, which cause temperatures to increase or decrease. Volcanic eruptions and the movement of crustal plates are also two events that naturally affects the climate. Firstly before I begin my answer to this question, I would just like to state that these are my personal opinions on this matter and did not intend to offend anyone on this matter.
Mankind’s industrialization of the world has caused a drastic increase in temperature. This rise in temperature is caused by solar radiation remaining in our atmosphere because of gases produced by humans through the burning of fossil fuels, land clearing, agriculture, and other human activities. These gases block the radiation from escaping into space therefore warming our planet. The result is raising of ocean levels, extinction of species and threatening of children’s health because of disease and less freshwater to drink. While many view climate change to be a more natural occurrence than others do, scientists have proven the average temperature rise of the Earth between 0.4 and 0.8 °C over the last 100 years.
Global Warming changing the earth’s climate is already having an effect on the world’s water supply in many ways, and is predicted to be much worse. Global Warming and climate change will influence water temperatures, weather systems and for the amount of water in streams and rivers. A change in the world’s water is a concern for the whole world. Climate change will affect both the quality and the quality of water, algae and bacteria will grown in areas where they are not normally found, and in other areas, salinity of the water will rise. A rise in atmospheric temperature will speed up the pace of the water cycle, it produce more rapid evaporation leading to more intense storms, floods and drought. In some cases, areas can become susceptible to becoming wetter and drier than normal, experiencing increased flooding in the winter and more drought risks in the summer.
Climate change, or global warming, is a major issue affecting many species around the globe. Climate change can be caused by burning fossil fuels, breeding cattle that create methane, cutting down forests which absorb carbon dioxide, and the extra carbon dioxide in the atmosphere trapping the sunlight. These factors warm up the earth, and in the past century the earth has warmed by an average of about 1°. This doesn’t sound like much however on a global scale it’s huge and scientists predict a rise of up to 6°C in this century if greenhouse gasses are not cut drastically. Climate change is not just about the arctic sea ice melting, there are many other implications such as, severe storms, floods, and droughts; the sea becoming more acidic; rainforests dying, and drastic rise in sea levels. There are current strategies in place which are tackling climate change in general such as renewable energy and low carbon transport however there are also management strategies that are specific to species directly affected by climate change. When considering the species affected, many will think of the obvious species such as the polar bear and species living in cold habitats with snow and ice. This essay will address the impacts of climate change on an obvious species, the snow leopard, and a not so obvious species, sea turtles, and evaluate whether the current management of these species will be adequate to protect them in the future. It will also discuss alternative or additional management options that might help these species persist under a changing climate.
When people burn fossil fuels to accumulate and produce energy a substance called carbon is produced. Carbon is released into the air in a form known as carbon dioxide. Carbon moves throughout the biosphere on the planet as it is recycled and reused. Carbon exists in the earth’s atmosphere in two common forms which are methane and carbon monoxide. These gases absorb and retain heat in a process known as the greenhouse effect. The Planets natural greenhouse effect makes life possible by regulating our temperature. It turns out that adding too much to the greenhouse effect can have horrible consequences on the environment. Each year, five and a half billion tons of carbon is released by burning fossil fuels and of that three billion tons enters the atmosphere. The remaining carbon usually gets absorbed by the oceans.
The scientific definition of global climate change is a long-term change in the earth’s climate due to an increase in the average atmospheric temperature. The facts about the global climate change are known throughout the scientific community, but not well known in the public and those facts are going be explained in this essay. Either the two reasons that people use for the global climate change are that it is the human species’ fault or it is a natural course of the environment. Both of sides of the argument are going to be explained depth in this essay, too. Global climate change, also known incorrectly as global warming, is not a debate about whether or not it exists. Earth’s climate is determined by the physics and chemistry of its atmosphere. Earth’s atmosphere consists of four layers; troposphere which is closest to earth, stratosphere, mesosphere, and thermosphere. Hardy says, “During the past 100 years we humans, as a result of burning coal, oil, and gas and clearing forests, have greatly changed the chemical composition of the thin atmospheric layer.” There is more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere due to burning fossil fuels. The atmosphere is made up of many gases such as nitrogen, oxygen, and argon. It also consists of trace gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, chlorofluorocarbons and, ozone. The trace gases have the greatest effect on our climate (Hardy 5). Up to a certain level, these gases help to keep the planet warm by absorbing certain infrared wavelengths, so that there can be life on the planet. Thus, they trap heat in the troposphere and stop it from escaping to space (Hardy 7). Therefore, the greater amount of greenhouse gases, the more heat trapped in the atmosphere. Earth’s temperature is increasing due to increased levels of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide released into the air from burning fossil fuels. Ever since the industrial revolution, the world has been pumping a lot of CO₂ and at the same time the average temperature is increasing. Some of the thing that make up the most CO₂ emissions are cars, coal burning factories, burning fossil fuels, and cows farts. CO₂ is a greenhouse gas and that means that it traps heat, this gives it a direct correlation to the increasing temperatures.
