The Presentation of Women in Advertising Today
In this piece of coursework I will be looking at different adverts.
Advertising products is very successful and powerful business.
Everyday an average person watches and hears one thousand five hundred
adverts. A thirty second weekday advert between seven, twenty six pm
and eleven pm costs eighth hundred and seventy pounds per viewing. If
the advert is shown five times between seven, twenty six and eleven pm
every weekday it will cost twenty one thousand seven hundred and fifty
pounds.
Advertisements can be used in two different ways; in magazines,
newspapers and on TV. The adverts that are shown in magazines and
newspapers are known as still adverts. The adverts that are shown on
TV are known as moving image adverts.
Adverts have a main role to influence the audiences in their everyday
life; from main needs (food, clothes, shelter)to luxury wants (mobile
phones, cosmetics, jewellery). The adverts try to make their products
seem important by linking it with real life situations.
In the early days adverts tend to be stereotype (women as housewife,
men as career man). Advertises still use stereotype but in a more
knowing ironic way (women as entrepreneur, men as 'housewife').
I will be looking at how women are presented in advertisements today
and in what way their roles have changed throughout the twentieth
century. I will be analysing four types of adverts; women as
housewife/mother (male gaze), women regaining femininity, women
portrayed as a weaker sex and women equal to men.
Before World War Two women were advertised as housewife /mother
through the male gaze. Males...

...s at work. I think that
women don't have to ask their husband for money to go out and buy food
or clothes. I also disagree with female gaze because that wouldn't be
fair on men's. Men's don't have to do everything women say to them.
They don't have to stay at home and do all the house works or look
after their children. So I think it is right for women to be presented
as men's equal. I think man and women need to be treated equally
because this way there is no male gaze or female gaze.
I predict that in the future women will be advertised in more
passionate way. I think in future women will be advertising everything
from main needs to luxury wants using their sexual figures. I also
believe that women will take the control over the advertising business
by selling their bodies to the companies that advertises products.
Women are frequently faced with the traditional stereotype of being at home, cooking, and cleaning all day doing the household chores that men should not have to do.
According to Jeanne Kilbourne essay, Kilbourne talks about women being abused by men in visual advertisements and the consequences of those representations. I for one, argue with Kilbourne that women are being too exposed and hurt when they are in advertisements. So using Kilbourne 's analytical perspective and my own perspective we can give our insights on why we feel women are being treated badly and unequally from men with the following pictures. From the past till today women in advertisement pictures have been mostly victimized by men, and Kilbourne and I feel this sort of action needs to come to an end.
society, women are expected to be at home doing the chores and taking care of their family. The
Advertising, whether criticized or celebrated, is undeniably a strong force in American society. Portrayals and Images of women have long been used to sell in published advertisements. However, how they have been used has changed enormously throughout the decades. Women have fought to find a lasting and prominent position in their society. Only in the span of twenty years, between 1900’s and 1920’s, the roles of women changed dramatically here in United States.
In May 1955, Housekeeping Monthly published an article titled The Good Wife’s Guide. This article provided eighteen tips for women; what they should be performing in the home and how to keep their husbands happy. “Have dinner ready”, “Clear away clutter”, and “Don’t ask him questions about his actions…” are just three of the eighteen instructions. (Housekeeping Monthly) One reason this article could have been so readily accepted, was due to the simplicity of life in that era. Women rarely voiced their opinions or challenged the gender norms. Therefore, the author’s intent could have been, “let’s give women tips on how to make their husbands happier and keep the households in order”. However, taking into consideration the gender norm of the era and contrasting it to the twenty-first century certainly brings up a host of issues when taking into consideration that the majority of today’s families are dual income earners.
The problem with the imagine of the way gender is made this day and age is that females and males aren 't equal. Some people say that is because of what it says in the bible about a female being made from one of a man 's ribs and some men think that makes them better than females because they help make us with one of their bones. Along with some other men think that women need to barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen. In advertising men and women are often represented differently. Men are often shown alert and aware of their surroundings, standing upright, eye open looking around, not moving a muscle, a firm or mean or serious look on their faces, gripping things tightly in their hands, hands in pockets, serious and
The objectification of women is a huge issue in society and is often led by advertising. However many men still believe that the adverts depicting women in a sexual and often passive posture are not very offensive but rather very funny or sexy. However how would they feel if it were their daughter or sister being advertised throughout the world as a sex object?
I can also see them after school when time permits. I have to clean the home, make their meals, and make sure they do their homework.
Advertising surrounds the world every second of the day. This form of influence has had the power to influence how society views gender roles ever since men and women began to appear in advertisements. Through the exposure to many different gender portrayals in advertising, gender roles become developed by society. This stems from how men and women are depicted, which forms stereotypes regarding the individual roles of men and women. People often shift their definition of an ideal image towards what they see in advertisements. From this, they tend to make comparisons between themselves and the advertisement models. Advertisements tend to be brief, but impactful. The different portrayals of men and women in advertising show that advertisements
and more. Most children get paid to do chores like walking the dog or doing the dishes. However,
Women – beautiful, strong matriarchal forces that drive and define a portion of the society in which we live – are poised and confident individuals who embody the essence of determination, ambition, beauty, and character. Incomprehensible and extraordinary, women are persons who possess an immense amount of depth, culture, and sophistication. Society’s incapability of understanding the frame of mind and diversity that exists within the female population has created a need to condemn the method in which women think and feel, therefore causing the rise of “male-over-female” domination – sexism. Sexism is society’s most common form of discrimination; the need to have gender based separation reveals our culture’s reluctance to embrace new ideas, people, and concepts. This is common in various aspects of human life – jobs, households, sports, and the most widespread – the media. In the media, sexism is revealed through the various submissive, sometimes foolish, and powerless roles played by female models; because of these roles women have become overlooked, ignored, disregarded – easy to look at, but so hard to see.
They are the ones who bring wages home, who cook, and clean the
It is also a women’s role to help others, which can turn into more finances when becoming a caregiver. While men play the role as the financial leader and provider for his spouse and family. With that being said it’s easy for women to become dependent on others financially, but we must be prepared for unfortunate events such as a divorce, or widowhood. Bodnar says, “For women, being Money Smart is a state of mind in which you’re confident of your
The average American is exposed to hundreds of advertisements per day. Advertisements targeted toward females have an enormous effect on women's thoughts, attitudes, perceptions, and actions. Most of the time, women don't even realize these advertisements are formulating self-image issues. These ideals surround them daily and they become naturalized to the ads. Advertising creates an entire worldview persuading women to emulate the images they see all around them. In order to create a market for their products, companies constantly prey upon women's self esteem, to feel like they aren't good enough just the way they are. This makes women constantly feel stressed out about their appearance (Moore). Advertising has a negative effect on women's body image, health, and self-esteem.
Women have long been known for taking care of their children and keeping the house clean for their husbands. However, in today’s society women work outside their home and raise the children. Women are not treated as equal to men. Pay wages are unequal among women and men.
