The Presentation of Atticus in theTrial in Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird The novel has the trial spread out over five chapters but the characters discuss it throughout the novel. The trail is the most important part in the novel, and is the most dramatically effective. The trial brings out what Atticus is really like; it brings out his true personality. The trial displays Atticus as a hero. It presents him as a brave and courageous. It shows him with true courage; he went into this fight for justice knowing that he was going to lose the case. And that's what true courage really is; it's not a man standing there with a gun; that is coward ness. True courage is fighting for what you believe in, even if it is a challenge and that it is more likely that you are going to lose, but fighting anyway. Ironically, though Atticus is a heroic figure in the novel and a respected man in Maycomb; but neither Jem nor Scout idolizes him at the beginning of the novel. Both are embarrassed that he is older than other fathers and that he doesn't hunt or play football. But Atticus' wise parenting, which he sums up in Chapter 30 by saying, "Before Jem looks at anyone else he looks at me, and I've tried to live so I can look squarely back at him", Wins Scout and Jem's respect. So in the five chapters of the trial Atticus is presented with true courage. The chapters leading up to the trial show how personally this trial is affecting Atticus. It is not just another case to him; he is generally worried about how it is going to turn out. We can see that he is worried because even Jem notices, "Its this Tom Robinson case that's worryin' him" Scout doesn't notice because she is still young, but Jem notices how much this is affecting his father. Atticus believes in being totally honest and straightforward with his questions. He comes across as a very clever person with very clever
Christ/God, the love and kindness, or the good, that the Christian religion conveys, or the inner happiness and the peace of mind, or the reward, that the person would inevetably achieve by following the word of Christ.
How are the characters of Atticus and Jack alike and how are they different? Choose at least two traits to compare them.
the reader into the book with the use of imagery, syntax, and figurative language. Also, the story was good, Atticus was like a modern story about the Prodigal Son Parable. The book was interesting to read and enjoyable. However, the book was all over the place. It started off with Scott coming over and then Scott dying and then finding Scott and then Scott’s point of view of what caused him to fake his death. If the reader was not able to fully understand what was going on throughout each chapter, the reader would have been lost. The shift of point of view confuses the reader for a little bit but then it all starts to click. This book will have a lasting effect on me
Atticus Finch is another victim of prejudice in the novel. After accepting to defend Tom Robinson, the town doesn't treat Atticus as an equal. The people of Maycomb believe that Atticus should not present a proper defense for a black person. Atticus doesn't care for this because he believes in equal rights. Atticus does not believe in racism or prejudice. Many people believe that Atticus should not defend a black person in court. This is because many people in Maycomb think a black person is guilty before anything is announced. While Atticus is defending Tom, Atticus makes the jury think differently about Bob Ewell. This makes Bob threaten and disrespect Atticus and his family. Atticus is not bothered by this because he knows he is doing the
In To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus is a very fair man and wants to do what is right. Throughout this story you see him teaching Jem and Scout differnet things that have to do with social justice. In this essay I will be writing about how he deals with the problems in court and how he is a kind and honest man.
Although they are critiqued, some people do whatever they can do to improve our society. In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch proves himself to be a hero. “The key to being a good dad...well, sometimes things work out just the way you want. Sometimes they don't. But you gotta hang in there. Because when all is said and done, 90% of being a dad is just showing up” ( Modern Family). Fathers aren’t perfect, but they can be the best role models to their children by simply being there for them like Atticus. He shows how to be a great father in the book “To Kill A Mockingbird” by Harper Lee. While Atticus makes mistakes as a parent, he educates his children with wisdom they’ll use throughout their lives. Atticus teaches his children how to see from different point of views, violence is never the answer, and what real courage means.
In a world of racism and prejudice towards blacks, winning a case for a black is near impossible. However, a brave lawyer takes a case for a black man. Will he win or will he lose? Lois McMaster Bujold once said, “Reputation is what other people know about you. Honor is what you know about yourself. Atticus Finch a heroic figure in the novel To Kill a MockingBird by Harper Lee is known as a white lawyer who defended a “black” man accused of raping Mayella Ewell, the daughter of a disturbing man, Bob Ewell. Atticus knows his reputation is at risk, when he decides to take a black man’s court case. He is appointed to this case because Mayella Ewell blamed an innocent black man, Tom Robinson of raping and beating her. She fails to admit the truth due to obeying her father. In the 1930’s racism was extremely crucial and no matter what the truth was a white person was most likely believed over an African American. Miss Maudie, The Finches neighbor tells the kids, “There are some men in this world who were born to do our unpleasant jobs for us. Your father’s one of them” (Lee 219). Atticus Finch is highly respected and someone everyone can look up too in Maycomb, Alabama. Throughout the novel, Atticus presents himself as calm, courageous, and an open-minded person.
In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee suggests that Atticus is a model parent. Atticus gives guidance to Jem and Scout, and he treats them with fairness and honesty. He tries to bring them up as best he can as a single parent.
Loyalty, I respect and love the idea of loyalty to a person or persons...or a cause. To be totally loyal to something without question but to also love and honor that something, that idea is something I long for and adore.
Isolated from reason and surrounded by barbarism, Simon and Atticus sacrifice their lives to the struggle between authority and empathy. They advocate for unfettered truth, free of amendment by the hypocrisy of a prejudiced society. However, as Golding and Lee illustrate, the inherent nature of man gravitates to the benefits of a lifestyle that advocates for authority and prejudice. Through their attempt to emancipate the minds of others, Simon and Atticus reveal the counterintuitiveness and failure of a society that suppresses empathy and compassion. To create peace and dispel the innate darkness of man, people must fight against their primal instincts and cultivate a culture of understanding early on in their lives.
