Since 1964 films based on a series of book written by Ian Fleming have
been and still are major blockbusters with millions of fans around the
world. This is because of the core features of the James bond films
that appeal to both male and female young and older viewers. The first
thing is the genre itself a spy action film some people like all out
action films but there are many who don’t, the bond films are
successful with both because they are cerebral but with lots of action
scenes to wow the audience but still keep them thinking and to engage
them. Also James Bond’s traits draw audiences because the famous line
“Shaken not stirred” emphasises his sophistication. His license to
kill gives him this aurora of danger; his alliance to queen and
country makes him that hero figure. But bond alone doesn’t sell these
films the exotic cars and gadgets interest’s viewers and to that
ice-cold coolness of bond, and the bond girls bring style and sex
appeal to the film. And the way the film is structured is well
organise to take the viewer on a journey to engulf him in the film so
he is just as much a part of it as the characters the opening credits
were it shows the gun barrel as if you were holding it aiming it at
bond and he turns towards the audience and shoots them. It is also
kept fresh by its ability to adapt to the current political issues and
technology when bond started women were treated almost as objects and
in the film were portrayed as helpless but nowadays the women play as
bigger part as bond most of the time getting the best of him. All
these traits and ability’s have kept the bond films new and fresh and
drawn people to the box office.
The Viewers who go to see a Bond film expect smart new action not just
a gunfight and a loud explosion the expect cunning and sophistication
gadgets that help Bond gain an advantage.
The opening sequence is an important event in a Bond film. Ever since the second James Bond film, there has been an action sequence as an introduction to the main feature. Watching a film, one can easily recognize plot, theme, characterization, etc., but not many realize what basic principle lies behind nearly every story conceived: the hero’s journey. This concept allows for a comprehensive, logical flow throughout a movie. Once the hero’s journey is thoroughly understood, anyone can pick out the elements in nearly every piece. The hero’s journey follows a simple outline. First the hero in question must have a disadvantaged childhood. Next the hero will find a mentor who wisely lays out his/her prophecy. Third the hero will go on a journey, either literal or figurative, to find him/herself. On this journey the hero will be discouraged and nearly quit his/her quest. Finally, the hero will fulfill the prophecy and find his/herself, realizing his/her full potential. This rubric may be easy to spot in epic action films, but if upon close inspection is found in a wide array of genres, some of which are fully surprising.

To fully appreciate the significance of the plot one must fully understand the heroic journey. Joseph Campbell identified the stages of the heroic journey and explains how the movie adheres meticulously to these steps. For example, the first stage of the hero’s journey is the ordinary world (Campbell). At the beginning, the structure dictates that the author should portray the protagonist in their ordinary world, surrounded by ordinary things and doing ordinary tasks so that the author might introduce the reasons that the hero needs the journey in order to develop his or her character or improve his or her life (Vogler 35). The point of this portrayal is to show the audience what the protagonist’s life is currently like and to show what areas of his or her life are conflicted or incomplete. The hero’s journey is a useful tool in analyzing narratives of all kinds, from myths to movies to everyday life. One of the most iconic stages in the Hero’s Journey is the ordeal, otherwise known as the belly of the whale or the cave, in which the protagonist has reached their darkest and most hopeless point – things cannot get worse. Once the hero gets through the main ordeal, their journey home is much more sedated. This can be paralleled to the encompassing plot structure, in which there is a climax, and then the intensity of the story winds down again. These conventions create a plot centering around a character who undergoes a journey in an attempt to achieve some type of goal (). By giving the central character more time on screen, the film helps the audience to not only understand the character’s motivation but also empathize with his/her emotional state. Additionally, some antagonistic force creates conflict with the main character, preventing immediate success(). Finally, after confronting the antagonist, the main character achieves his or her goal along with growing emotionally(). This proven structure creates a linear and relatively easily followed series of events encompassing the leading character and a goal.

So when we sit down at our next spy movie we have to ask ourselves what’s real? The media has influenced the public into believing that the employees of the Central Intelligence Agency are reckless and womanizing when in fact they work more traditional white collar jobs.

He is invincible and infallible. He is like a god who can save his partner and himself at any critical juncture. No matter how urgent and dangerous the situation is, Bond is able to make the right decisions all the time. However, in Casino Royale, Bond made plenty of mistakes. He got poisoned by Le Chiffre so easily, which almost killed him. He did not recognize his two “friends” were actually both traitors. Because of love, Bond got trapped and tortured by Le Chiffre, and he even wanted to quit his agent job in order to live with his girlfriend. In this version, James Bond is no longer infallible, no longer always cool and logical, he got emotions as well as weaknesses. Nonetheless, because of his weaknesses, James Bond became more like an actual human being who has flesh and blood, audiences would have more attachments to a character like

Narrative elements are used as a bridge by the directors in their film to create any master plot that is currently known. Any modification at any narrative element used by the director at important moments inside the story can help you portray a different master plot. This used of narrative elements can be best described as an ever changing process that takes place inside an individual’s head. Depending on the individual that may be exposed to those narrative elements can create different meanings. This new interpretation can be different for everyone. We have to be aware that one change in the surface scenery can lead to many ideal outcomes in our minds and that is the main power the audience has.
“Entertainment has to come hand in hand with a little bit of medicine, some people go to the movies to be reminded that everything’s okay. I don’t make those kinds of movies. That, to me, is a lie. Everything’s not okay.” - David Fincher. David Fincher is the director that I am choosing to homage for a number of reasons. I personally find his movies to be some of the deepest, most well made, and beautiful films in recent memory. However it is Fincher’s take on story telling and filmmaking in general that causes me to admire his films so much. This quote exemplifies that, and is something that I whole-heartedly agree with. I am and have always been extremely opinionated and open about my views on the world and I believe that artists have a responsibility to do what they can with their art to help improve the culture that they are helping to create. In this paper I will try to outline exactly how Fincher creates the masterpieces that he does and what I can take from that and apply to my films.
