Willpower: The Key to Success “Successful people strive no matter what they feel by applying their will to overcome apathy, doubt or fear”. This quote was said by author Dan Millman who lectures in the personal development field. Arguments over the differences between motivation and willpower have always been prevalent. Through blogs, and articles, I have read different opinions on the topics and gotten to understand both sides. Although motivation can inspire great things, ultimately, willpower is why people do what they do. A study was performed to test the effectiveness of motivation in regards to working out, and at first it was working for this woman’s husband. But to really stick to something, you have to be consistent with it, and motivation …show more content…
In an article from The Huffington Post, it says that “willpower is what makes us save for the future rather than splurge now. It helps us to keep our heads down, studying and working when we really don’t feel like it”. Whereas motivation might get tasks done, or help you achieve minor things in life, willpower is what is going to get the job done, or what is going to help you achieve those goals of yours that you never thought were possible. Yes in fact most of this is based on opinion, but here are some facts. A self control researcher, professor Roy Baumeister discovered back in 1999 that willpower shows results. He tested students to exercise their willpower when trying to improve their posture after two weeks. He said “showed a marked improvement on subsequent measures of self-control” when comparing them to a group of students who didn’t work on their posture. When motivation fails, willpower doesn’t. In an article from changing minds it said that even in the face of opposition, a person with strong willpower will still be able to …show more content…
But what's improving your motivation, you’re either motivated, or your not. So many different factors go into whether you do or don’t have motivation at the moment. Everyday you have to make decisions, and resist impulses. Therefore everyday you test your will, and your will is always there. You just have to be mentally tough enough to dig down and find it. When obstructions try to hinder your ability to achieve something, you require even more will. But you have that will. “When something can be done ‘at will’ it means one can act at any time of choosing without hindrance”, this quote goes more into the consistency of willpower in comparison to motivation. Willpower is always there, you can always use willpower. But as stated before, motivation isn’t always there. There will be times when you need to get something done but you won’t because you lack the motivation needed to get that task finished. Your willpower will always be there for you to use even when your motivation is
In “The Downside of ‘Grit’: What Really Happens When Kids Are Pushed to Be More Persistent?”, Alfie Kohn; an author and lecturer, claims that not everything is worthwhile especially when going at a task for an extensive amount of time. He asserts that ‘grit’ (the passion and determination when pursuing long term goals) is becoming less persuasive and credible. Kohn states that grit can cause serious issues that have real consequences. Important goals about life have changed significantly suggests Kohn. With goals comes the ability to be persistent, the author mentions. He describes that persistence is one characteristic among many that could become valuable when wanting to reach a goal,
Procrastination in terms of weakness of will has only been recently discussed in philosophical discourse. According to Richard Holton, weakness of will or the lack of willpower is defined as acting against one’s values or when one is too easily able to reconsider their intentions. Procrastination, by definition, is the act of avoiding completing tasks often until rearing that deadline. Procrastination has commonly been viewed as irrational and has held a negative connotation, partly due to being considered a willful act by an individual. Procrastination, like other aspects that resemble a lack of willpower, is naturally attached to the concept of weakness of will by not only laymen, but also theorists and philosophers. Only recently has procrastination
Attitude is the key to succeeding in life and living the American Dream. With the right mindset, you can motivate yourself to accomplish almost anything. Barbara Ehrenreich was correct when claiming we “grow up hearing over and over.. “hard work” was the secret o...
*Click* *Clack* *Clack.* The sound of controllers fills my ears. The only expression I could see on every player’s face was determination. The desire to prove themselves burned brightly. I turn to meet the box of color that displayed the game I love to play. I thought to myself, “Did I practice enough? How should I play this out? I absolutely have to win!” As these thoughts raced through my mind, I give my opponent a good luck, and press start. “3, 2, 1, Go!” Suddenly, the fictional characters displayed come to life and all of my concentration switches to this game. Determination takes control over me, and the only word I can think of is “Win.” Gaming is a passion that I have had ever since I was young. The competitiveness of it is what
Charles Duhigg’s The Power of Habit, acknowledges how habits control our daily lives in every decision we make. For Instance, an ambitious woman named Lisa Allen, has not always had a fruitful life. Previously, she had abused her body with harmful toxins such as tobacco and alcohol since the beginning of her teenage years. Carrying out these habits everyday resulted her into being unmotivated and unconfident. In fact, she never kept a job longer than a year and began to fall into major debt. “She needed a goal in her life, she thought. Something to work toward” (xii-xiv). It begins with the “three-step loop” a cue that triggers our brain to do the habit. Next a routine, a set of actions that are either physical or mental. Finally a reward of satisfaction that determines whether or not this habit will be continuous (19). Not all habits can be good, but this is where the golden rule applies. Duhigg explains that in order for you to change your habit “ you must keep the old cue, and deliver the old reward, but insert a new routine”(62). “However, simply understanding how habits work- learning the structure of the habit loop makes them easier to control”( 20). Reading The Power of Habit, helped me understand the process by which I made a positive change to fight procrastination.
Winston Churchill has stated that, “Continuous effort (not strength or intelligence) is the key to unlocking our potential.” Intelligence can be important. It’s what helps us do quick calculations while working on an important, world-changing project, or even a small school assignment. However, someone could have all the intelligence in the world, and never have a chance to use it. Motivation is what gives the world a chance to apply it’s intelligence to important projects, big or small. Without motivation, no one would feel the need to change the world or pass a test. Although intelligence can be important, motivation is a more useful trait because it can be used to do anything, intelligence often leads to being less content with life, and
The quality of unimaginable success is determined by grit. Despite confronting difficult life circumstances that delay the process individuals who are passionate, intelligent, and dedicated to one’s own success will continue maintaining consistency throughout their journey. Success is measured by an individuals’ commitment to effectively work hard towards life-changing goals. In the journal article “Grit: Perseverance and Passion for Long-term Goals,” Angela L. Duckworth conducts several studies in order to convey human’s capacity for higher achievements while still enduring challenges and failure. Although Duckworth’s research has proven that individuals who are less gritty tend to shift trajectory, I believe working hard and keeping “stamina” is essentially the key to achieving your goals (1088).
But if you keep pushing yourself to achieve your goal and to step by step do what you need to do to achieve that goal. People who lost motivation in life are those people who been failed before and gave up in their dreams but I believe that those people who did not give up on their dreams did achieve their goals in

The WillPower Instinct:How Self-Control Works, Why It Matters, and What you Can Do to Get More of It by Kelly McGonigal, genuinely opens eyes on what will power is and self control is. During the process of reading there were many conflicting ideas going on in my head. My willpower challenge started off as being To stop eating candy, Later on, it turned into the end the overall procrastination in the most important task I have to complete. Finally, it turned into increasing the amount of sleep I get.The different ideas set in the book, led me to alternate in my will power challenge. Overall, this book aided me in realizing the what I really need to do, in order to have success where I need it.
Motivation can be expressed by the way we react toward certain situations, especially those that can cause a gain. Many times we have to have goals or incentives to be able to motivate. Motivation does not come naturally to everyone; many times we have to seek within ourselves in order to find the drive that will eventually allow an individual to seek the motivation needed to succeed.
It will help improve your work and yourself as a whole. In the Occupational Health journal they described ways to better to motivate themselves because in a lot of professions there is no one by your side to motivate you. Most professions think you need to motivate yourself. The journal said that each employee needed to establish smart goals, which mean specific, measureable, achievable, relevant, and timely. (Occupational Health 2008) Although they used this application for a work place setting, this can be used in your everyday life. Setting goals and using their methods is congruent with devising a strategic plan that I talked about earlier, and the ten empowerment laws will help guide your strategic plan. Having an empowerment mindset can be used everyday. It can be dedicated to your career, personal life, and your

“Energy and persistence conquers all things.” (Benjamin Franklin). Persistence is a characteristic that doesn’t allow someone to give up when doing something challenging. This is a great quality to have when trying to achieve anything you engage in, because along the way you will face many challenging things that will make
Persistence. Persistence in the face of opposition. It is easy to be passionate when life and business is good. You will have the perfect mindset and attitude. However, what happens when the perfection stops and the hardships set in. Will you drive forward, with the same passion and commitment? The winners do. The successful entrepreneurs do. Persistence is the ingrained mindset of success. It truly does separate those that succeed from those that fail. Your persistence is what separates those that dream to achieve and those that achieve. Never give
