Power- (1) Possession of control, authority, or influence over others (2) Ability to act or produce an effect (3) Physical might, mental or moral efficacy (4) legal or official authority, capacity, or right -Merriam Webster Dictionary. In the book Messenger by Lois Lowry, readers are exposed to a world where some individuals possess superhuman abilities and some who share the same power in a different form. For example, in the book, Matty has the power to heal, which is a phenomenon that is uncommon. There are people like Seer who are average, but are very wise. Power is control, authority, and strength, but in the real world similar to the book’s world, there is always good or bad use of it. Control can be used for good to help others, however, …show more content…
“He wasn’t surprised. After the thorny branches had shredded her dress, they had reached for her legs as night fell, and now he could see that she was terribly lacerated. The wounds were deep, and he could see exposed muscles and tendons glisten yellow and pink in a devastating kind of beauty where the ragged flesh gaped open.”(147) Control is powerful because it gives the user access to everything; such power that can help people by supplying them with things they need but do not have. Control can also hurt people by disorganizing a set system, such as if Matty had used his gift before the correct time and disobeyed Leader, he would have caused disorder. “He remembered that in the art books he had leafed through at Leader's, many paintings depicted death. A severed head on a platter. A battle, and the ground strewn with bodies. Swords and spears and fire; and nails being pounded into the tender flesh of a man's hands. Painters had preserved such pain through beauty.” (152) Furthermore, when control is used as a weapon or a tool for personal use, it becomes dangerous because it can harm others or something else and command them, like Trademaster. In the real world, power is given to people who control the law. Accordingly, control is power and is a great tool to help others, notwithstanding a destructive weapon that can …show more content…
Control can be used for commanding others for any favorable reason, however, it can be harmful when it is used negatively by causing struggle and corrupting a society, in reality, the people who have the most control are the governments. On the other hand, authority can have a positive effect on people when it is used to maintain balance, however, it can be used to disorganized one, in actuality authority is given to the police or the people who control the law to keep the justice and to keep the peace. Finally, Strength relates to power and can have a good effect on people when it is used to benefit good people and solve problems, however it still could be used for bad like if it is used to harm or cause damage to something or someone. Power is control, authority, and strength, but how they are used determines if that power is good or
The word “power” is defined in many ways. There is not a specific statement that defines what power is or what it’s supposed to be. Power can make or break a person or even an entire nation. Power is a measure of an entity’s ability to control the environment around itself, including the behavior of other entities. Ken Kesey, the author of the novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, shows us the difference in power and control among the strong nurses and the men in the psychiatric ward. The men who are placed in the ward are controlled by Nurse Ratched, who takes control of situations the same way she did when she was an army nurse. Nurse Ratched is used to the men on the ward obeying her until a man named R.P. McMurphy is admitted. McMurphy is a strong man who had power and control in the outside world and continues to show his power and control once he is in admitted which creates a lot of conflicts within the story. In One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s
When somebody abuses a great amount of power, that individual can lose all their power. The struggle against someone who abuses power is perfectly depicted in the novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, by Ken Kesey. When someone abuses their power, they can impose certain feelings and actions onto others. If someone tries to conceal their personality, . Finally, if someone abuses power and is constantly challenged by another individual who is trying to take the power abuser’s power away from them, the power abuser will always be frightened of his or her challenger. When someone abuses power and takes full control, they can lose all their power and respect quickly.
Power as defined by the Oxford Dictionary is “the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behavior of others or the course of events.” In the book Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding, power and in some cases the lack of power play a vital role in explaining the story. The story is about a group of young British boys who are stranded on an island and forced to create a civilization of their own. William Golding chose a conch shell to symbolize power. The conch shell plays a very vital role in representing power and the way that a civilization created by power, can be slowly broken down because of lack of power.
Control, “the power to influence or direct people's behavior or the course of events.”. Now compare that to the definition of power, “the ability to do something or act in a particular way”.They may both have similar definitions. Power and control have very few things that separate them. Power is the ability to make something happen, whereas control is not only making something happen but also making it go the way one wants it to. Power and control play major roles in both Les Miserables and Macbeth. When one is intimidating enough to alter or make another's decisions, they are not only giving themselves power, but also mistreating others in the process. By abusing their power, others are made to feel unworthy of making their own actions.
Power is a very interesting thing to hold. Many good-natured men have been destroyed by power and turned away from their morals as a result. When giving a man absolute power, it’s ingrained in the human brain to take it to a new level. This ideal is present in every type of government, regardless of if it’s a dictatorship or a government supported by autonomy. Modern day government suffers from this power hungry greed. Power is an element of human life and often leads to temptation because mankind thirsts for control, and that’s what power grants.
The definition of power is the ability to influence the behaviors of others or to change the course of events. Power can be gained through hard work or power can be given to you In a book published in 1937, this problem couldn’t be more prevalent. This book is Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck. The story tells of two migrant workers, who are incredibly close friends. They goes place to place looking for a job during The Great Depression era. They eventually find a ranch in Soledad, California. Where they will face characters and incidents that will decide the fate of their dream. Powerful people are not as powerful as they seem, but is given power due to societal hierarchy or physical traits.
C. Wright Mills in his article “ The Structure of Power in American Society” writes that when considering the types of power that exist in modern society there are three main types which are authority, manipulation and coercion. Coercion can be seen as the “last resort” of enforcing power. On the other hand, authority is power that is derived from voluntary action and manipulation is power that is derived unbeknownst to the people who are under that power.
Power. It is defined as the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behavior of others or the course of events. Throughout time, certain individuals have acquired power in their society as a way to govern and keep order among their community. Power is not a new concept; it was used in the past by many emperors, kings, and queens, and is still being used by presidents, prime ministers, and dictators. Although, it has been used to further progress societies into what the world is like today, not all power has been used for the best of mankind. But what goes awry to make power turn corrupt? In William Shakespeare's Hamlet, it is illustrated how power can turn corrupt, when authoritative figures, who possess power, abuse it for their personal gain, rather than for the common good of the society.
Power has been defined as the psychological relations over another to get them to do what you want them to do. We are exposed to forms of power from the time of birth. Our parents exercise power over us to behave in a way they deem appropriate. In school, teachers use their power to help us learn. When we enter the work world the power of our boss motivates us to perform and desire to move up the corporate ladder so that we too can intimidate someone with power one day. In Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness Kurtz had a power over the jungle and its people that was inexplicable.
Power allows people to do anything they want. They can use it in different ways, they can tell people to obey them, they can use it to hurt someone they hate, and even rob. They can also use it in a positive way, they can help people and do a lot of good things with it.
At this point, with an understanding of what power is, what it means, how it is created and the various means through which it is expressed, one can begin to conceptualise how it is that power functions within a given society. Symbolic, cultural, social and economic capital distribute and perpetuate power within a society, through a cycle of transformation whereby these capital resources can be interchanged and manipulated to the advantage of individuals who have

Power is authority and strength, which is any form of motive force or energy, ability to act, or control. When too much power is given, a dictatorship government can form, in which all decisions are made by one authority. In the book Animal Farm, by George Orwell the author portrays how “Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely” (Lord Acton).
There are several sources of power, some of them are authority, reward, expertise, and coercion.
