In the novel Song Yet Sung by McBride’s has suggested that once limitation is placed on an individual, such as race and gender, Individuals then face hindrance to the privileges and access to the American dream. McBride’s idea of limitation is prominent during the time of slavery for African Americans, as these same limitations are present during the twenty first century.

James McBride exemplifies this in the novel Song Yet Sung as the first characters that we meet is Liz whom happens to be African American Women. Slavery is a term that can create a whirlwind of emotions for everyone. During the hardships faced by the African Americans, hundreds of accounts were documented. Harriet Jacobs, Charles Ball and Kate Drumgoold each shared their perspectives of being caught up in the world of slavery. There were reoccurring themes throughout the books as well as varying angles that each author either left out or never experienced. Taking two women’s views as well as a man’s, we can begin to delve deeper into what their everyday lives would have been like.
Opportunities came and went, but no one seemed to care about the challenges African Americans were facing. Success was complicated due to the fact that unfair chances are given and no one could be held responsible because of this. Thus, Harlon L. Dalton and Toni Cade Bambara conclude with the idea that success is hard because of unfairness towards certain things for example, opportunities and equality. However, in Dalton’s essay the myth states everything to be true and correct while he points out the key differences in making the statements false. Toni Cade Bambara uses the viewpoint of a young girl in her story named Sylvia to show the impact of how success changes the lives of every African American and how it represents inequality. In addition, success is not as easy as the myth claims it to be, it illustrates that African Americans are not given an equal chance, and the odds are stacked against them. Some might argue that opportunities are for everyone and they are equal, though this is a good point it is not accurate. Many problems like race is just one factor that took a while to solve, so it cannot be said that chances are equal. The second meaning of the American dream is that of social justice, and the inclusion of all in the social and political aspects of American life. This is the American dream that is best illustrated in Frederick Douglass’ narrative. This is the dream that was sought by the civil rights movement, which was focused on widening opportunities for all Americans, regardless of their race or social status. This American dream is however more tightly intertwined with race, than with social status. Douglass’ narrative demonstrates the challenges faced by members of minority races in America in their pursuit of the American dream of equal opportunity, upward mobility, and inclusion in other social and political aspects of American life.
During the period after the emancipation many African Americans are hoping for a better future with no one as their master but themselves, however, according to the documentary their dream is still crushed since even after liberation, as a result of the bad laws from the federal government their lives were filled with forced labor, torture and brutality, poverty and poor living conditions. Racism and the sense to fulfill a dream has been around throughout history. Langston Hughes’s poems “Harlem” and “I, Too” both depict the denial of ethnicity mix in society and its impact on an African American’s dream. James Baldwin’s “Sonny’s Blues” uses jazz music to tie the belief of one’s intention and attainment to the black race. The two main characters are different in a way of one fitting into the norm of the American Dream and the other straying away from such to fulfill his own dream. All three pieces of writing occur during the same time in history in which they connect the black race with the rejection of the American Dream and the opportunity to obtain an individual effort by a culture.
DuBois presents the question “[h]ow does it feel to be a problem?”, introducing the attitude towards African-Americans upon their emancipation (DuBois 3). During the eighteenth and nineteenth-century, notions of freedom for Black slaves and White women were distinctively different than they are now. Slavery was a form of exploitation of black slaves, whom through enslavement, lost their humanity and freedom, and were subjected to dehumanizing conditions. African women and men were often mistreated through similar ways, especially when induced to labor, they would eventually become a genderless individual in the sight of the master. Despite being considered “genderless” for labor, female slaves suddenly became women who endured sexual violence. Although a white woman was superior to the slaves, she had little power over the household, and was restricted to perform additional actions without the consent of their husbands. The enslaved women’s notion to conceive freedom was different, yet similar to the way enslaved men and white women conceived freedom. Black women during slavery fought to resist oppression in order to gain their freedom by running away, rebel against the slaveholders, or by slowing down work. Although that didn’t guarantee them absolute freedom from slavery, it helped them preserve the autonomy and a bare minimum of their human rights that otherwise, would’ve been taken away from them. With the numbers and data that certain researchers have collected, it proved that the achievement of the American Dream among people of color was indeed less due to certain obstacles and complications that others do not overcome. From jobs to home locations, the people of African American descendants always got the “left-overs” of the Americans and statistics support this claim. Although education could be an escape from poverty, the people of color rarely have access to good schools or education systems. All of these factors are evidently confirmations that the realisticity of a colored person to achieve the American Dream in today’s society is not impossible, however very difficult.
Over 200 hundred years ago, African-Americans wanted freedom from white slave owners. African-Americans were treated so bad that they did not know if they were going to make it though each day. African-Americans were not allowed to attend the same schools, use the same restrooms, and use the same water fountain as whites during that period of time. African-Americans had been enslaved to long, so they were used to whites telling them what to do. However, African- Americans wanted freedom, but they lacked stability at the point in time. African-American was going to need stability, just like they wanted freedom, to make it in society. Take Holly Golightly for example, Holly wants freedom, but she lacks stability, which will help her achieve the freedom she wants. In the story Breakfast At Tiffany by Truman Capote, Holly Golightly is a character who wants freedom rather than having stability throughout her life, but soon Holly will realize that freedom will cost her more than she can handle.
