Habits could lead our lives in two directions, A path that leads to success and well-being, or a path that leads to nowhere and laziness. Currently, I am on the path the leads to nowhere and laziness. However, modifying or eliminating a bad habit is not an easy task to accomplish. In the book The Power Of Habit by Charles Duhigg, explains with willpower and determination you can change a certain habit and achieve any long goal you wanted to achieve. A change in bad habits leads to a change in life"(Jenny Craig). Personally, my bad habit is coming home from college, proceed to laying down on my bed and go on my phone, which leads to losing precious time for completing my homework. The change I am trying to accomplish, is eliminating the habit of going to my room and laying down on my bed, using my phone and losing track of time. My first attempt at changing my habit didn't go too well. My first attempt went like this, whenever I went to my room, took all necessary items to do my homework, then proceeded to the living room to finish my homework. That was the plan I was hoping would work. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out too well because of having my phone always in my pocket, which lead to me constantly getting distracted by it. Since the weekend is coming up it might be even more of a challenge to do my homework because I have the" I have so many days to do my homework, I'll do it later" mentality . Duhiggs method is “But to change an old habit, you must address an old craving, you have to keep the same cues and rewards as before, and feed the craving by inserting a new routine"(pg 266) Duhigg stated. Duhigg explains you must discover what your craving is and then change your pattern/routine. Rather of me going into my room and laying down in my bed, I would walk into my room and drop all of my belongings on the floor and proceeded to clean my room. The cue is hearing the thump every time I drop all of my belongings on the floor in my room. The new cue that would replace the thumping noise would be cleaning my room and putting all of my belongings on the table that’s located in the living room. After that, I forced myself to take out all the necessary items that I need for me to finish my homework. Adding on to the method of me getting not distracted would be leaving my phone in my room, where it can’t be in arm's reach. After doing all of those tasks I continued on to do my homework. To my surprise, I finished my homework with less distractions and in less time. I felt so productive and motivated, the feeling of accomplishment. “Finally, there is a reward, which helps your brain figure out if this particular loop is worth remembering for the future”(Pg 19) stated Duhigg. The feeling of accomplishment was the reward every time I finished an assignment. In the end the craving that I desired
: In reading How to Be an Undividual, it is clear that the author David Koloff is a full-fledged nonconformist, although, believes in the natural order of finding yourself; even if it involves being an intentional conformist in the beginning. Whether they are positive or negative, our habits are an integral part of our lives. Because of this, when Professor James VanderMey addressed the 33rd annual Honors Convocation at Mid Michigan Community College, he decided to speak on the topic of habit. In his speech, entitled “Remarks on Habit,” VanderMey (argues against Sartre’s point of view by) discusses the advantages of having good habits, especially the habits represented by the Diploma Qualification Profile, a series of proficiencies that students learn as they are educated at Mid Michigan Community College. First, he shows that good habits lead to creative problem solving. Then, he argues that our habits make us who we are. Finally, he shows how good habits may grow and multiply. Habits, especially DQP habits, are positive and useful, because they allow one to think creatively, become a better person, and find innovative ways of doing.
Peter Kreeft says that there is a moral jungle in the world. The perversion and sin is enticing us every day, and if we lack of will and perseverance, we may fall in an immoral life. Nowadays, subjects like abortion, AIDS, rape, drugs and violence are torturing us. Our soul may be destroyed by the greed for money and riches. The twentieth century was supposed to be peaceful and prosperous, but the man invented The World War; therefore, genocides and starvation appeared. However, there is a being who encourages us to be moral people, and he is God. Bad times are no excuses for bad choices and bad lives. Moral rules and ideals are not designed for good times but for bad times. For example, the laws of a country are most needed when there is corruption and negligence. Bad times are for good people and good people are for bad times; only in a bad world can we become good. Therefore, times of crisis serve us to rise up and fight against them.
Habits are choices that one continues to do repeatedly without actually thinking about them. Habits start with a decision, but they eventually become automatic. One can probably think about things we do every day that we wish we did less of, perhaps like binging Netflix, constantly checking social media, or snacking when not being hungry. Procrastination has become such a bad habit for me. It is very hard to stop procrastinating everything once you have gotten into the habit of doing it. Once I had a term paper due for my religion class. It was to be ten pages long and we were told to spend a lot of time doing it. Being the procrastinator that I am, I waited to the very last minute to do it. I waited until the night before to do most of it. Needless to say, I was up very late that night. In this class there was always a part of the paper due on a certain date before the final paper was due. Having things due before the final paper is due keeps me on task and keeps me from procrastinating until the day before the paper is due. There was one paper which we had to get sources for a while before the paper was due and it forced me to keep up with the paper, rather than let it go to the last minute. This class has taught me that the earlier you start the more positive your final result will be.

When it comes to the topic of addiction, most of us will readily agree that it is a miserable trait to possess. An addiction is a physical and psychological state of being that if not treated correctly could result into harmful wrongdoing. In The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg, he recounts a story in which a fatigued housewife named Angie Bachmann lost all of her family’s assets, amounting to a million dollars due to a gambling addiction. Every habit has three components: a cue or a trigger of an automatic behavior to start, a routine the behavior itself, and a reward which is how our brain learns to remember this pattern for the future. According to Duhigg, “you cannot extinguish a bad habit, you can only change it” (63). Duhigg suggests that in order to change ones bad habit the “Golden Rule” must be implied. The Golden Rule is a theory of shifting a habit by retaining the old cue and reward, and tries to change only the routine. Duhigg’s answer to the question in the chapter title, “Are we responsible for our habits?” is simply “Yes.” If we have an awareness of our habits, then we are responsible for their consequences. In the case of Angie Bachmann, she should be held accountable for her gambling debts because she was well aware of her own bad habit and did not try to seek for help.

Habit one is to be proactive. This habit says that as human beings we are responsible for our own lives. Our behavior is a function of our decisions, not our conditions. We create our own destiny. The proactive person acts rather than waiting to be acted upon.
The first part of the solution is that I should take a reasonably-timed nap after getting back from school. The time length of the nap can be adjusted depending on how tired I am, my mood, and how much work I have to do. The next part of the solution is to hand over my phone to my parents for them to hold on to until I am done with my homework.
