In this new digital age the Internet can be accessed by anyone around the world. However, with the development of the Internet and various technological devices, different opinions have emerged ranging from the negative and positive effects that have been brought about into society by this new technology. The Internet has brought about the invention of social media, which now serves as a simpler way for individuals to communicate, connect, and express themselves with each other.
One of the many benefits that the Internet has provided us is the ability to connect and share ideas through different forms of communications: social media, instant messaging, video calling, and many others. This phenomenon has been investigated by several writers who are interested in the changes resulted from technological advances, such as Clive Thompson, a technology writer and long-time contributing writer for the New York Times Magazine and columnist for Wired. In the chapter “Public Thinking,” from his book Smarter Than You Think: How Technology is Changing Our Minds for the Better, published in 2014

He observes that Ernest Duchesne had discovered penicillin during the 1890s, but his findings were not acknowledged as he was unknown and young, and unfortunately he died fifteen years later; penicillin was not rediscovered again until thirty-two years later by Scottish scientist Alexander Fleming, who was unaware of Duchesne’s discovery (Thompson 61). Unfortunately, many lives were lost all those years before penicillin was rediscovered and because both Duchesne and Fleming did not have access to a medium that allowed them to easily share ideas. Thompson further addresses his observation by providing several other
The whole world is connected by technology. Over time, technology has advanced from payphones and typewriters to cellphones and computers. The progression from a gray-screened cellular device to an advanced smartphone allows easier accessibility. So the question is whether or not the Internet or online technology is affecting the way we read long texts. In my opinion, I agree with Nicholas Carr, who states that "our hyperactive online habits are damaging the mental faculties we need to process and understand lengthy textual information.”
Today, most people live surrounded by technology. Everyday people are creating more new and advance technology with different programs, websites, and ideas to share with everyone. Connecting with people around the world is becoming effortless, instantaneous, and accessible with the technology that has been developed. Clive Thompson, a writer for the New York Times Magazine and Wired, points this out well in a passage within his book, Smarter Than You Think, called “Public Thinking”. Since technology made it easier to connect with others, people have been writing their thoughts, ideas, and opinions online and on their phone. Thompson believes that people have been able to improve their writing because the technology they use daily. With all
“Social media, a web-based and mobile technology, has turned communication into a social dialogue, and dominates the younger generation and their culture. As of 2010, Generation Y now outnumbers Baby Boomers, and 96% of Gen Y has joined a social network” (Qualman 1). Social media now accounts for the number one use of the Internet, and this percentage is rising bigger every day (Qualman). As a consequence, people are becoming more reliant on social media, which has a led to a number of advantageous as well as unfavorable effects. The world is more connected today than it has ever been in the past, and this is all because of growth in technology. What has yet to be determined though
Social media has changed the way people communicate with each other and in turn, has affected our ability to empathize in both negative and positive ways. One of the most harmful consequences is the rise of cyber-bullying. Another negative issue has been the trend of trolling in comments sections of websites, chat rooms, and other online venues of communication. In spite of this, there have been constructive consequences due to social media such as the ability for family and friends to keep in touch on a regular basis. Because of social media, many people are finding support and resources to help them when they fall on hard times or experience tragedies like death and illness. Overall, social media is an exciting new world that changes as it grows and it will be up to society to utilize it for good.
Fleming’s discovery marked the change of modern medicine. His penicillin testing soon led to better medication not only for the general population, but for the military too. Medical corps in WWII used this new treatment to the fullest extent, and society itself was made healthy again due to penicillin. Alexander Fleming is truly one of the leading biologists of our time, for without him, something as small as a common cold could well be
The scientist, Alexander Fleming, had just discovered and destroyed the world’s first anti biotic, penicillin. When he was disposing of the mouldy samples, he had no idea what he was doing. When he learnt of what he had done, he was very distressed. Fortunately, he was able to recover enough of the disposed samples that he was able to cultivate more penicillin, without which none of us would probably be here today.
In the early twentieth century, an incidental discovery led to one of the greatest medical advancements in medicine. This accidental discovery rivals any intentional successful medical discovery in terms of lives saved. The development of penicillin is still important today as it was many years ago while science continues to alter new types and strands to battle the ever changing and newly discovered diseases of the world.
The new age of technology was born late last century in the form of the silicone chip. Since this early invention computers have progressed in leaps and bounds from the very basic early models to the now very complicated and very powerful computers of today. In between this growth the Internet developed into a mega market where billions of dollars are traded daily. It is a place where you can pretty much buy and sell anything you can think of. But with the development of such a powerful tool there are always going to be problems such as pornography, hackers, dodgy chat rooms and authenticity of information. But like with any argument you have to weigh up the good with the bad, the internet provides you with a wealth of information so that you can find out much on many different products, allows businesses to function so much more efficiently, there is also the availability of online learning.
The internet as we all know is probably the most useful resource known to man in this day of age. Not only is the internet easy to access its easy to use. Nearly everyone owns a computer and nearly all of which have access to the internet. But isn't that a good thing? Millions of people having the ability to access and share all the information anybody could ever want.
The use of the Internet has exploded in the past few decades, and the age of the user is swiftly declining as well (Greenfield, Patricia, and Zheng Yan). “The spread of Internet access has been described as nine times faster than that of radio, four times faster than the personal computer, and three times faster than television” (Shields, Margie, and Behrman 5). The Internet has woven itself into people’s daily lives and has really changed culture in numerous ways. It has helped make education more accessible, especially to those in developing countries. Specifically, it has brought life saving health practices and information to those who otherwise would have gone without it. Also, children who need extra help learning, like kids with special
Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Parascope, Snapchat, and Linkedin are all a part of the huge trend taking over the world. Social media had become big about ten years ago and keeps growing. Social media is not in just one or two countries yet it is worldwide; people in almost all countries are liking statuses and posting updates and pictures. It was indicated that 73% of adults online, 73% of teens online, and 72% of young adults online use some sort of social media (Fleck and Johnson-Migalski 135). With social media came many positive and negative effects. People worldwide are addicted to it, spending hours upon hours on the Internet reading about what other people are doing. The United Nations has declared access to the internet to be
The internet has influenced, and is still influencing the way society communicates in many different ways. The rise of the internet has caused people to communicate differently in areas never dreamed of before the internet came into existence. Education has been revolutionized through the world of the “Information Super Highway”. Medicine has also seen reform as the internet improves research and communication. Individuals are starting businesses from scratch, while others are selling household items for extra cash. This internet “typhoon” sweeping the globe has become a way of life for many individuals all across the globe.
Even though people have different opinions on whether social media has a positive or negative impact on society, it can be said that social media has a positive effect on society as a whole because it lets people communicate with each other easily, it has been said to improve education among children, and has helped improve the economy in the world. One of the main reasons why social media has positively affected our society is because of how it has made communicating with people much easier. “Today, four out of five active internet users maintain at least one social media profile” (Moe, 3). Using these websites, such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and etc., people talk about everything with anyone from what they are planning to do, to what they are eating and much more (Moe, 24). We can also send private messages to other users of these websites about personal matters that you just want to discuss with them.
Although social media has provided todays society with instant forms of communication and ways to connect, it also created a new standard for living and has caused problems for many groups of citizens in all walks of life and has caused society to re-think its usage. There are two views about social media, either. It is a positive addition to society and its benefits outweigh the risks, or that social media causes more harm than good and it’s usage should be limited. Some of the ideas that are central to the idea that social media is a benefit to today’s society are that social media encourages increased communication with friends and family, provides fast access to breaking news and other information, and helps businesses attract new business and correspond more quickly with their existing customers.
Social media and the internet has become apart of the culture of this generation. Many people turn to social media for various reasons such as news, networking, games, and other time wasting activities. Social media and the internet has affected the development of people of our generation by contributing to less social interactions, strengthening communication skills, and online harassment.
