Today while watching a movie on cable, there were four to five minute breaks of commercials. Most of these commercials consisted of new reality shows. If they were not new, it was dates for when the old ones would make a comeback. Reality television has been in our lives since the 1940 's.(Slocum) Although, the shows that were on years ago were much less vulgar. Reality stars are becoming role models to teenagers rather than their peers or parents. "TV can easily take the place of a parent, teaching kids the 'acceptable ' ways of society."(Skeen) When teenagers parents are too busy for them, they more than likely will look to someone else as their role models. Usually their role models might be someone from maybe a regular TV program, but they might look at these "real" shows for their way of doing things. Reality TV shows also seem to reward people for their bad behavior. You see cops and expect people to be arrested for their bad behavior, knowing that is what is supposed to happen in real life. Then you have people like Snooki on Jersey Shore whom gets arrested and put on for more air time. Almost like it was just threw away as nothing. Another point Tom Green states in his article for the Huffington Post is that back in the day you get pregnant at 16, you get into trouble. You do not end up with your own TV show. "Compromise your morals and make a sex tape and it may get you enough attention to land a lucrative fragrance deal." (Tom Green) Giving someone a TV show or fragrance deal after their sex tape "accidentally" gets put out into the public, almost seems to lower the values of what people should strive for themselves. Reality television is also known to corrupt the mind of our youth. "A study conducted by the …show more content…
Reality television is a reflection on our society today. There are many different ways it effects our daily lives. "Not only did we watch the show and talk theories, but we hopped on Facebook and Twitter to connect with other fans." (Striepe) In this previous quote it tells us that after watching either episodes of a reality television show or a regular T.V show, our society feels it is necessary to talk about it with people we would not normally interact with. People are addicted to all different shows, and the Internet allows everyone to talk about them with different types of fans. Allowing the shows to take over that much more of their lives. Our reality T.V. Shows make us seem ignorant to other countries. Overall, most of these programs don 't give off a positive portrayal of America 's society as a whole.(jackis) The previous quote is showing that when other countries see our reality television shows that are "real" they are not having positive feedback. It seems as though these shows are driving young kids too be driven by money and fame. Ten percent of British teenagers say they would abandon their chances of a good education if they could become a star on reality television. (Perritano) Although the previous statement is from a British survey, it does show that young kids believe it is OK to be put into a television show for no reason to make money. If only the networks would put on

Untasteful, feral, depraved viewing; Euphemism for palpable voyeurism; Is spelling the end of decent, moral society - Slagging out reality TV from a high culture standpoint is as easy as taking candy from a blind, paralysed, limbless baby. Reality TV is a significant part of popular culture in the current settings of mainstream Australian society. Counting the number of reality television shows on two hands is now a physical impossibility. But what impact is this concept having on society now and into the future?

How Reality TV affects the audience and the characters who were participating into it? Does it really give knowledge to people who were watching and supporting? Or is it just the sake of money and exposing their appearance on television? When it comes to watching television, people at home can choose which types of program they want to want for many reasons. Some people look to television for inspiration; others want to be kept informed about their surroundings and the world. In the article entitled, “Reality TV and Culture” by Jack Perry, he argues, there are some good points to how reality television are formed and offered. Perry explains that, not all of the shows are designed to encourage and promote dangerous and unrealistic. However,
Reality based television has a broad landscape ranging from competitive game-like shows to programs following the daily lives of a group of people. Every major network now has some form of reality programming because the genre’s shows are high in viewership and require low costs for production. The genre is appealing to viewers because it provides them with a first-hand look into the lives of everyday people, which allows them to observe social behavior that helps them determine what is appropriate or not (Tyree, 2011, p. 397). Since the majority of modern reality stars start out as unknowns, frequent viewers of reality programming believed that fame is obtainable if they appear on a popular show (Mendible, 2004). According to Mendible’s evaluation of the genre in the article Humiliation, Subjectivity, and Reality TV, people enjoy reality programs beca...
The first effect of reality shows is the image it gives viewers. Reality shows give misconceptions of everyday life; the Real World and Jersey Shore show young adults relaxing, having a good time, and partying every day. The...
In summary, the real detriments of reality television far outweigh the artificial claims that some people consider benefits. Reality television is a successful form of entertainment for many people, but no good comes from it. Scripted television shows that are entirely fictional can serve all of the same purposes. They can be just as dramatic, catastrophic, and interesting as reality television shows. It is important that viewers take the time to evaluate and understand the reasons they enjoy reality television. It is essential to become familiar with the statistics of reality television, learn about the process of producing one, and examine the morality of such shows. Presenting contrived situations as reality, promoting unethical values, and presenting humiliation as a form of entertainment are only some of many detriments of reality television shows.
In today 's society, television is one of the greatest entertainment, and currently reality televisions have become the most commonly watched television programs. Reality tv, beside being entertaining , it has effected society in a negative
Kids are very impressionable human beings, they see one thing and they begin to imitate this thing. Reality TV enables kids to think for themselves. Going back to the show Maury, it is mostly African American teenagers seen yelling and screaming at the top of their lungs making a spectacle of themselves. Teenagers watch reality television more than anything else. One statistic states, “On average, a teen will watch 28 hours of television per week, adding up to almost 15,000 hours a year” (reportherald.com). Shows such as Love & Hip Hop, exposes teens to
Reality Television has changed television in a way that no one could have imagined. Being the one of the most talked about genre in history, it is seen by millions of viewers. It has more ratings than any other kind of show (Breyer 16). From its start, there have been many Reality Television shows. Shows like The Real World, Survivor, Big Brother, and Jersey Shore. All of these give off a negative portrayal of reality. While Americans watch these shows, it seems that the show is real life, but in reality, no pun intended, before the show is even filmed, it’s written, edited, and produced (Breyer 21). Writers humiliate and degrade people just for the plot of the show, making their private lives public (Breyer 16).
Reality television has become nearly unavoidable and American society is more affected by reality television than they realize. Society can be shaped from reality TV in many ways like the way people act, and also the way people can perceive a problem. I never really could have thought just some of the stuff we watch on television like Big Brother, could be impacting us in any way. I always thought the reason people said reality television is bad for us was because we would get addicted and not want to leave the couch. I started to research reality television by looking up what could be the potential impact and I was shocked by the results that were good and bad. Coming from the article by John Perritano he says “Many say reality TV has put
Reality television has changed the world today by encouraging violent behavior, elevate imprudent personalities, and depict woman of their values. Many reality TV shows are driving young kids to be driven by money and fame. Our reality television make us seem ignorant to other countries. Young viewers of these reality TV shows do not realize that most of the shows are often scripted and are not “real”. Although the programming of reality TV can be highly entertaining, it is important to be aware of the messages, and values that these shows often portray. Since reality TV has such a strong foothold in American pop culture, it is likely not going anywhere or changing its content any time
According to Shannon Kelly, reality television has the worst reputation of any type of television programming. Reality tv has gotten bad ratings and reviews due to its violence, profanity, racism, behavior, etc. if these shows had regulations, there wouldn’t be so much negative feedback upon them. “Complaints about the amount of ‘reality’ that is actually a part of reality television, is not the only issue the genre has to contend with.” (Reality TV 62)
