Are new eating habits building us up, or tearing us down? What and why we eat certain foods plays a vital role in an individual’s health. Most skeptics who do not look at what they eat are usually unhealthy. We don’t often think we have a relationship with food, and yet we do. Food has become a very important part of our lives, we use it for many things such as; pleasure, comfort, depression, socialization, etc. Considering I don’t eat the most health conscious foods I still wouldn’t consider myself unhealthy. It is very hard to stay healthy within today’s economy. We aren’t able to pay the expensive prices for healthy foods. If you would go into a grocery store you will see most of the produce selection is very expensive, while the junk foods are always on sale and affordable. While others don’t have to spend as much in the store because they made eat home grown vegetables and meat. While conducting a food journal my peer was that way. She ate very healthy her family grows their own vegetables as well as raising their own chickens for eggs and meat. People are becoming more and more obese, some restaurants are now rewarding them for being overweight. There is a restaurant in Las Vegas, Nevada called “The Heart Attack Grill” that would give people 350 pounds or more their meal for free. This restaurant has the theme of a hospital, while promoting the restaurant they’re showing the people how bad they’re eating. They say a man at the age of 29 died at the Heart Attack Grill adding the detail the man ate there everyday. Places like these maybe a huge cause to obesity and health related issues. Yet when people have the choice to go get a big juicy cheeseburger or go home and eat a salad, most people will choose the juicy burger. By ... ... middle of paper ... ...oney. The food and money used for events like these could be used for people in need such as the homeless, or donated to charity. I do understand some of the people that do eating contests do it for fun. Instead of winning large portions of money and prizes, they could use the eating contests for certain causes. Overall, we as the people are starting to careless about what we eat. In the economy we have today, families are leaning toward the unhealthy junk food and frozen dinners. Rather then buying fresh produce because number one its expensive, and number two if you have a busy working family it won’t last as long so it may just go bad in the refrigerator. We need to use the contest money to boost our economy back up so people can buy more fresh produce. Rather than giving money to winners of an eating contests or have them do the contests for different causes.
Throughout the United States many American’s go through and eat at fast food places such as, McDonalds, Burger King, and Jack ‘n the Box. Mainly unaware of the amount of weight one can gain if consuming it on a daily bases or even two times week, can cause health issues, diabetes and possibly obesity. This was the main premise for writer Dave Zinczenko essay Don’t Blame the Eater, who makes an argument that many people are becoming obese and diabetic because of the fast food they eat. He asks a regarding his concern; Shouldn 't we know better than to eat two meals a day in fast-food restaurants?, As a way to engage the general public, like parents and teenagers, he expresses his argument through his own experience when he was a teenager eating at fast food places and information on the fast food industry in regards to how many calories are in the food.
After briefing his readers on the death of Blair River, the spokesperson of The Heart Attack Grill, Robbins begins to delve into the seriousness that should come when discussing the repercussions of obesity. He states that “The Centers for Disease Control tells us that obese people have a substantially higher risk not only for heart attack, but also for diabetes, most cancers, and many other types of cardiovascular disease.” (Robbins 69). Robbins places this claim from the CDC after discussing the death of the morbidly obese River in order to get the reader to mock and question how The Heart Attack Grill owner, Jon Basso, jokingly approaches the idea of obesity. After the author then writes about how Basso will not change his ways and will continue to praise the overweight, he then transitions into nationwide statistics about American sickliness. Robbins presents that “Two-thirds of the residents of the United States are now either overweight or obese… [‘Type 2 diabetes’] accounts for 90 percent of the diabetes in the country, and the incidence in children is skyrocketing.” (69). Robbins is once again trying to convince the reader that the unhealthy epidemic occurring in America is a matter that should be taken earnestly, and by juxtaposing his evidence with the light hearted approach from Basso, the two advocates almost become
When we think of our national health we wonder why Americans end up obese, heart disease filled, and diabetic. Michael Pollan’s “ Escape from the Western Diet” suggest that everything we eat has been processed some food to the point where most of could not tell what went into what we ate. Pollan thinks that if America thought more about our “Western diets” of constantly modified foods and begin to shift away from it to a more home grown of mostly plant based diet it could create a more pleasing eating culture. He calls for us to “Eat food, Not too much, Mostly plants.” However, Mary Maxfield’s “Food as Thought: Resisting the Moralization of Eating”, argues differently she has the point of view that people simply eat in the wrong amounts. She recommends for others to “Trust yourself. Trust your body. Meet your needs.” The skewed perception of eating will cause you all kinds of health issues, while not eating at all and going skinny will mean that you will remain healthy rather than be anorexic. Then, as Maxfield points out, “We hear go out and Cram your face with Twinkies!”(Maxfield 446) when all that was said was eating as much as you need.
Nutrition and health have become more popular in today 's society. Our generation is becoming more and more indebted to the idea of being healthy and eating nutritious meals. However, in “The American Paradox,” by Michael Pollan he argues that our unhealthy population is preoccupied with nutrition and the idea of eating healthy than their actual health. He also mentions the food industry, nutrition science and how culture affects the way we eat and make food choices. While Pollan is right about all these factor that affect our eating habits, there is more to it than that. Convenience, affordability and social influence also affects our food choices making them inadequate.

In his essay “The American Paradox”, Michael Pollan illustrates his conclusion that Americans who focus on nutrition have a higher probability of decreasing their well-being. Pollan defines the American paradox as “a notably unhealthy population preoccupied with nutrition and the idea of eating healthily.” For most of our human history, our parents and culture have influenced our diet. However, today the idea of what to eat has been based on the opinions of scientists, food markets, and nutritionists. I agree with Pollan’s argument that being preoccupied with what we eat makes us unhealthy, however, we need a balance and a sense of responsibility in what we eat.

In Wendell Berry’s “The Pleasures of Eating,” this farmer tells eaters how their separation from food production has turned them into “passive consumers” who know nothing about the food they eat, or their part in the agricultural process (3). They are blindsided by a food industry that does not help them understand. Berry argues that the average consumer buys available food without any questions. He states consumers that think they are distanced from agriculture because they can easily buy food, making them ignorant of cruel conditions it went through to get on the shelf. Humans have become controlled by the food industry, and regard eating as just something required for their survival. Berry wants this to change as people realize they should get an enjoyment from eating that can only come from becoming responsible for their food choices and learning more about what they eat. While describing the average consumer’s ignorance and the food industry’s deceit, he effectively uses appeals to emotion, logic, and values to persuade people to take charge, and change how they think about eating.
Obesity has become an epidemic in today’s society. Today around 50% of America is now considered to be over weight. Fast-food consumption has been a major contributor to the debate of the twenty-first century. Chapter thirteen, titled “Is Fast-Food the New Tobacco,” in the They Say I Say book, consists of authors discussing the debate of fast-food’s link to obesity. Authors debate the government’s effects on the fast-food industry, along with whether or not the fast-food industry is to blame for the rise in obesity throughout America. Previously to taking this class, I had never given much thought to my eating habits. I always thought of the way I chose to eat as one of those things I didn’t need to concern myself with too heavily now because I’m a young broke college student. The way I eat is pretty similar to the way most of my friends eat and when you live away from home, that seems like the norm for people in college. However, after applying what I’ve learned in this class to my life, I’ve realized that the dietary choices I make now affect not only my current health, but my future health as well. So overall, I would say that my eating habits are pretty bad, but I’m working on making them better.
