For this assignment I had the pleasure of interviewing my mentor. A gentleman that I truly admire for his endless efforts and never say enough attitude, I find him to be nothing less than the working backbone to an education system. A man that has given his life to his career in order to ensure an amazing future for all students to come. My mentor Mr. Hardy Keith Edwards. Hardy is an educator for the Compton Unified School District, he is a specialist in English language arts and a long term Substitute teacher. Along with those two demanding roles Mr. Edwards also wears the hat of Lyft Driver, Creative Consultant for the American Aesthetics Academy, and Author/Writer of an amazing soulful book of poetry titled Pepper Grease, and his greatest most heart filled role of caretaker for his grandmother.
When I went to ask Hardy about his career choice and why he decided to pick education as a main focus he simply smiled and told me that he wanted to more effectively address the deficits that he has seen and those which we know statistically exist on the areas academic prophecy and overall career employability. I found this answer to be sort of heartwarming. As a male coming out of South Central where majority of professionals has given up on our youth, here was a man willing to dedicate his life to turning these statistics around and fight for our future. It is a battle that has been the center of the problem for years for our community youth that feel there is no higher goals to be set. Truly and answer of value and one that I truly appreciated.

I can see that he is a person that fully dedicated himself into his work for a higher success, which is something I truly value about our partnership, I feel we both have a drive that is very unmatched by the average bystanders. I recently had the pleasure to spend the day in Mr. Edwards’s class, and as amazing as the experience was I do not feel I am fit for this kind of career choice. Though we both have similar goals of progressing our youth and communities I wish to do it through health care while he educates and expands the depth of grey matter that is the glory of our brains by the masses. At this time, I became a group leader in an after-school program for a 3rd-grade class. This was my first time working with children and as imagined, it was a tough transition. The students were Latino and African American, living in poverty stricken neighborhoods with a dysfunctional home life. The program focused on students who were at risk of retention. A large number of students were below average and had been recommended to receive extra academic support. As a result of my time spent working and learning with the students, I choose an educational path.

Harper’s presentation, he discussed the importance of mentoring. He also discussed some myths of being a mentor and how to be successful and bold. To be successful and bold Mr. Harper said that a person should ask for what they want in life. “Closed mouths don’t get fed” is a popular expression that describes exactly what Mr. Harper was talking about. An individual cannot be scared to ask for what they want in life, because the worst thing that they can be told is no. He also said that people should treat every interaction as an interview. This means making your best first impression whenever speaking to anyone, because every moment is a networking opportunity.
Becoming an educator for such an important career is not an easy task and requires a lot from those who are looking into pursuing it. After completing the inspirational teacher write-up, I was amazed at how many of the goals my inspirational teacher had mastered. I enjoyed linking up actual concrete examples of what this teacher does to the PDP goals statements. One of the things that has been very apparent throughout this week has been the collaborative nature of teaching. When I look back at my experience of volunteering in his classroom, I realize how much effort he put into getting administration and other teachers together to come up with cross-curricular activities and reconstructing new policies for things such as plagiarism; goal four is related to this because it is based on the commitment to maintain ethical and functional working relationship with all members of the educational community. I always saw my mentor as a great teacher, but now I also see how amazing he is as a collaborative member of the teaching community.
I believe that I am at the Proficient level of performance according to the Framework for Professional Teaching Practices (Danielson, 1996). For Doman 1, planning and preparation, I believe that I demonstrate adequate skills. I work hard to make connections to my content knowledge with other subject areas through discussions with general education teachers for social studies and science curriculums (Danielson, 1996). As a special education teacher, I must have a full understanding of my students (Danielson, 1996). I design lessons that are the instructional match for my students, modify grade level curriculum, and accommodate for different learning styles.
Looking back from this past year to my earlier school days, one of the teachers that boldly stands out in my memory is Mrs. Miner. No one else has named me as her daughter, Joanie Miller. While at Grace Academy, art class at the end of the day with Mrs. Frisk still makes my sides ache from giggling. During the days when there were no art classes, Mr. Peterson’s enthusiasm for hockey brightened the gymnasium, as he and my father practiced rapid-fire slapshots on some unsuspecting ninth grader. But, through all the memories, I was trying to think of one characteristic of teachers that has shown through the many years. I thought about their dedication, patience and guidance but decided that these wouldn’t do.
Being a teacher is not an easy task as many people could think. To be a teacher does not only imply to know the subject to be taught, it also includes being willing to constantly improve oneself integrally, as much as updating the resources and materials one uses in teaching. Reflecting and analyzing over and over again the best way to teach to learn and how to make students to extend what has been learned. The many hours spend in the classroom will never be enough to plan lessons, prepare materials, review pupils tasks and exams, as well, all the administrative requirements one has to cover for whatever institution we work. Besides all this a good teacher, a professional one, will have to find the time to keep preparing to improve oneself.
I chose education as my career path because I hope to be able to make a small difference in a child’s life. Time and time again I have seen children being educated poorly and/or not having appropriate role models in their life. I feel that an educator must not only be able to convey to the student the classroom material, but also be a counselor, coach, mentor, and a parent. Failing to fulfill these roles gives a child the chance to slip through the educational system without having the opportunity to influence them to some degree.
First, I realized that, teachers carry a lot of weight on their shoulders and have great responsibilities. They have to balance the curriculum, students, parents, lesson plans, common core, and upper management and still maintain a professional demeanor. Second, educators must follow a strong code of ethics. They must be professional at all times with students and colleagues, keep confidentiality, not have or show any prejudice or bias, maintain safe and positive learning environments, help students with problems, and hand out disciplines accordingly. Lastly, I found that when you’re a teacher, your education never stops. Teachers are always trying to improve their own education and professional growth, both for the benefit of their students and for the benefit of themselves.
