The Pigman
The topic I chose to write about is lonely. Many characters in The Pigman are lonely. Some of the characters in the story that are lonely are John, Loraine, Mr.Pignati, and Bobo. My definition of lonely is to be by ones self. Another definition of lonely is being forgotten, left alone. An example of lonely is “The boy was left alone in the park.”
In the story, the most lonely character was Mr.Pignati. He was lonely because he had no children and his wife recently passed away. Mr.Pignati always went to the zoo. The reason he went to the zoo was to see his best friend, a baboon named Bobo. Bobo was lonely to.
Loraine was lonely at times to. She was lonely when she first moved there. No one would talk to her and she started to get upset because of this. Then one day John had to sit next to her on the bus and he started laughing. Loraine told him to shut up and this is when they became friends. They started the L&J fund together and this is how they met Mr.Pignati.
At one time they took the other baboon out of his cage. He got so lonesome one week he wouldn’t eat. Bobo got very sick. Mr.pignati would always visit him to make sure he was getting better. Loraine and John would also go with Mr.Pignati to visit Bobo. Bobo got pneumonia and died.
They started out not very trusting Mr.Pignati, but then they found out he wasn’t such a bad guy. They started to visit him more often and became good friends with him. They went shopping and to the zoo and played memory games with each other. They went roller balding together and Mr.
Barney, a teenage boy, and his parents rent a summer cabin in Dunstable. Him and his parents are staying in a house that belonged to Captain Latham. Captain Latham had a trading ship when Dunstable was an important port.
Many times in a story what the main characters say can reflect their personality and lifestyle. This is shown effectively in the memorial epic by Paul Zindel, The Pigman. Throughout this stunningly truthful story, John and Lorraine consistently say things that show just what type of people they are.
"Piggy saw the smile and misinterpreted it as friendliness. There had grown up tacitly among the biguns the opinion that Piggy was an outsider, not only by accent, which did not matter, but by fat, and ass-mar, and specs, and a certain disinclination for manual labour." (Golding 68)

John Steinbeck uses indirect characterization, discrimination, and conflict to demonstrate the effects of loneliness and need for companionship in his novel Of Mice and Men.
The entire story was a symbol of Needy’s life. The setting in the story was symbolic to the way Needy was feeling. Needy’s life was diminishing right before his eyes, and he did not realize it. The different changes in the story represented how much Needy’s life had gradually changed over time. By reading the story the reader can tell that Needy was in a state of denial.
John Steinbeck strongly suggest that those who suffer from pervasive loneliness are suffering because of their intellectual and social circumstances in the novel Of Mice and Men. As George and Lennie arrive at the ranch, they realize that there are three different types of people who are pervasively lonely. A black ranch hand named Crooks is socially unacceptable because of the color of his skin. Crooks stays by himself in the barn house and has taken up the hobby of reading books and collecting different possessions. Even though Crooks is isolated from society, he is able to remain a “proud, aloof man”(Steinbeck 67). The characters I pick for this story are John Singer and Spiros Antonapolus, two characters which I personally thought were the most interesting to me because of their tragic relationship in the story. The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter shown me that Singer had a positive view on life whenever he was around Antonapolus . During the era of the Great Depression in the 1930’s, many people lost their jobs and became very lonely. This was around the time when John Steinbeck released his famous book about these “bindle stiffs”. The book was called, Of Mice and Men. Loneliness is one of the major themes of this novel. Several of the characters in the book are alone. In this novel, John Steinbeck shows how being alone affects different characters. Each is affected in a different way. In order to live a happy, fulfilled life, the characters in Of Mice and Men must overcome their problem of being lonely. the characters Candy, Curley's wife, and Crooks show many examples of loneliness. Over the chapters these characters make many decisions by themselves. They never have anyone to talk to about their rough patches in their life. they must all overcome obstacles, some harder than others. some choices they make will change their lives

In the novel The Pigman by Paul Zindel, when the police bring Lorraine after the party, she tells her mother she did not do anything wrong. Lorraine was in the wrong in this situation because she could have told the truth about where she was. When John’s party was getting started Lorraine could have told her mom where she really located. Lorraine should have informed her mom on the phone that she was at a party that John was throwing instead of lying. Lorraine didn’t have to try on another person clothing. In the text, it states “Lorraine had on the same outfit on she had worn that other night, with the feather in her hair, and Helen Kazinski had this faded yellow dress on, which she couldn't zipper up the back because she’s so fat.” (p.124)
