The Physics of the Curve Ball
Dad said that one of these days I would figure it out, but to this day I am still clueless. I have always been able to throw a decent curve ball; you don’t just throw 6 one hit games in your high school career without one. I have always wondered why and how the ball curves through the air, and it wasn’t until now that I have really had the chance to research a topic that has puzzled me for so long. I would bet that even pitchers in the “Big show” don’t know how or why, but they obviously have the talent and ability.
I don’t know when the first curveball was thrown or who threw it, but there is a lot of controversy out there about whether or not the curveball really exists. The only forces on the curveball

They just forgot to mention the other effects of fluids in nature. “The influence of the fluid on a body moving through it depends not only on the body’s velocity but also on the velocity of the fluid,” this is called relative velocity ( ). The relative velocity of a body in a fluid has an effect on the magnitude of the acting forces. For example, as a long distance runner is running into a head wind, the force of the fluid is very strong. If the runner is running with the help of a tail wind, the current’s force is reduced and may even be unnoticeable. As I was doing research on this assignment I came across a web page about the effects of gravity on mars as it specifically relates to the projectile path of a curve ball. I know that you cannot believe everything you read, especially when it comes to internet content, but the issue is still worth noting. I will mention this effect when the topic of spin on the ball is discussed. Gravity was the other force that was mentioned by the scientists. This isn’t too particularly exciting, because it’s always in
The curveball was invented over 100 years ago by William Arthur Cummings (Fleitz, D). His older brother and teammates called him Candy Cummings (Fleitz, D). Cummings started to develop the curveball in 1861 and 1862 without much progress. After many years Cummings finally invented the curveball in 1867 (Fleitz, D). This invention made him one of the most dominant pitchers of the time. Cummings quit baseball at the age of twenty-eight (Fleitz, D). Other players started to develope their own curveball by the 1874 season (Fleitz, D). Batters started to learn to hit the curveball by the 1877 season (Fleitz, D).

Throwing is a fairly natural activity for a person. Everyone at some point in time has thrown some object at a person. In baseball throwing becomes an art. Throwing a baseball is a relatively easy task, but throwing it accurately and with a high speed is difficult. People who play this sport spend a very long time perfecting their throw.
The most common off speed pitch is a curve ball because it has a lot of movement if it is thrown correctly. To throw this pitch you use the same wind up but when you get to the point of throwing the ball, instead of throwing it regularly you snap your wrist to make the ball spin. In order to get a lot of movement you have to throw the ball with a little bit less velocity. It is important to be able to throw a curve ball while pitching.
The Rwandan genocide occurred due to the extreme divide between two main groups that were prevalent in Rwanda, the Hutu and the Tutsi. When Rwanda was first settled, the term Tutsi was used to describe those people who owned the most livestock. After the Germans lost control over their colonies after World War I, the Belgians took over and the terms Hutu and Tutsi took on a racial role (Desforges). It soon became mandatory to have an identification card that specified whether or not an individual was a Hutu, Tutsi, or Twa (a minority group in Rwanda). The Tutsi soon gained power through the grant of leadership positions by the Belgians. Later on when Rwanda was tying to gain indepe...

Africa has been an interesting location of conflicts. From the conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea to the revolutionary conflict in Libya and Egypt, one of the greatest conflicts is the Rwandan Genocide. The Rwandan Genocide included two tribes in Rwanda: Tutsis and Hutus. Upon revenge, the Hutus massacred many Tutsis and other Hutus that supported the Tutsis. This gruesome war lasted for a 100 days. Up to this date, there have been many devastating effects on Rwanda and the global community. In addition, many people have not had many acknowledgements for the genocide but from this genocide many lessons have been learned around the world.
Clarissa Dalloway’s childhood was the foundation on her lavish adult lifestyle. Her childhood influenced her thoughts on social class and standings. Clarissa was raised in a middle class family that always valued social status. As a child Clarissa spent a lot of time with her family. Her experiences at her Uncle William Bourton’s estate exposed Clarissa to the ideas of social norms. (2 Worster) These family influences taught social status was necessary for security and happiness in the future. Unlike most women in her era, Clarissa was aware of the lifestyle paths she could take, when most women of there time period were unaware of choices they had concerning their future lifestyle. (2 Worster ) Clarissa’s upbringing gives her the mind set that you must be rich and have social status in order to be important in life. This is later proven false in the novel, as Clarissa become evident that the comfortable and extravagant lifestyle she chose, is not all its cracked up to be. Worster shows in her literary criticism, “The Self Imprisoned Clarissa Dalloway” that Clarissa struggles with her identity due to the manipulation of truth her own mind. As “Clarissa Dalloway meagerly examines the conditions of her life and resignedly submerges herself beneath the shallow façade of the perfect housewife.”(1 Worster...

Over the period of around 100 days, with the death toll ranging somewhere between 800,000 to 1,100,000 the Rwandan genocide has become infamous for the high numbers of dead in such a short amount of time, and for the inadequate response of the UN an...
Clarissa Dalloway is the main character and the protagonist of the book Mrs. Dalloway. Clarissa Dalloway provides a unique example of the difficulty there is in finding happiness in the world. (Lauren Klein) She is 50 years old; she displays her energy and time into being a high society hostess by throwing lots of parties. Since she throws parties this is her way to convey her pathway to communication and an attempt to draw people together. In the beginning of the novel, we see Clarissa as an upper class woman who seems to be a bit shallow. (Lauren Klein) she is a bit shallow because she is the wife of a government worker and looks down on a person who doesn’t follow the social standards that are set for them. Deep down inside of her, she
Mrs. Dalloway was written by Virginia Woolf in the year 1925. This stream of conscious style short novel outlines one day in the life of Clarissa Dalloway. Woolf utilizes an omniscient third party voice to narrate the story, and the point a point of view that shifts often. The narrator mainly focuses on the daily activities of Clarissa Dalloway and the madman ravings of Septimus Warren Smith. The stream of conscious style of writing is a glimpse into the mind of the narrator. It exploits the inner most thoughts and therefore it does not follow any specific pattern. As the narrator thinks a detail or something from the past the narration follows that path. Throughout the day the point of view shifts between Clarissa Dalloway and Septimus
... she could die in total happiness, but the hears the words “Fear no more the heat of the sun.”(186) and that “She must go back to them” (186), back to reality, back to her party, back to her life. Clarissa found joy in Septimus’s death as she took it as a sign that throwing it all away can be beautiful and that it can bring joy, “he made her feel the beauty; made her feel the fun.” Woolf effectively uses Clarissa’s reaction to Septimus’s suicide to show that women from her time where under so many constraints, that they could never win that they could not be themselves, that maybe throwing it all away was the answer to find true happiness. Woolf’s novel Mrs. Dalloway is a portrayal of women and social classes that works in an effective way to show how women of her time were treated, and to demonstrate a deep analysis of how society viewed, used, and treated women.
Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway is a novel that follows the life of Clarissa Dalloway and her connections to the characters introduced in the story. The interaction between these characters is a clear reflection of the issues that were present during post-World War I England. A common motif that is recurring within the novel is the division between the classes. As mentioned Clarissa is an upper-class woman who is married to Richard Dalloway a politician. Similar to many other women Clarissa is bound to the expectations that come with her status, where being a dependent on a man is a common notion. In fact, Virginia Woolf illuminates the significance of men in the novel, especially with characters such as Ms. Kilman, Elizabeth and Sally Seton. The social system presented in Woolf’s work dictated the role of women in
In the story Mrs. Dalloway written by Virginia Woolf, the World War 1 in many ways influenced all of the characters. The setting takes place in London, in the summer of 1923. This story was made to be six years after the end of World War 1. At the beginning of the story a great conflict took place not long before the time frame, which was the War. Being oblivious to what all the others are feeling, the higher classes were stubborn to their established social dynamics. Because of this reason, Virginia Woolf integrates one of the characters Septimus Warren Smith as a way to show the differences between all of the characters that want to live their lives and move forward and the characters that aren’t lucky enough to do so. During the time, they’re facing problems because of the World War 1, and it’s completely tearing apart society.
